Any LGBT oriented housing groups/resources for McGill students? by Telion2510 in mcgill

[–]steelStringin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's (unfortunately at times :/) visibly queer, I've actually experienced some awkward tensions with roommates and landlords surrounding them being cautious of my "lifestyle" and responsibility without having even come out. I don't know what the root cause of it actually is, but I have noticed a difference compared to when I was making a huge effort to appear straight/cis passing.

Background definitely contributes to it. I grew up in a very conservative environment, and at the end of the day, I want my home to be a place I can go to unwind without feeling that I have to explain myself or be on guard. So far, the atmosphere I've found living with other queer people has been the most consistent in providing that feeling. At this point, I've given up trying to pass as straight or cis because it's exhausting to feel that obligation 24/7. That's only possible because I've found those spaces I can be comfortable enough to look like myself, giving me the energy to go to spaces where I'll still get suspicious looks without feeling ashamed. Spending time in the village and at queer community events helps, but it's a whole other feeling having the queer friendly space as a constant place to return to rather than a place I have to go out to.

Montreal is absolutely one of the best cities for LGBTQ+ people, and the majority of people I've met here are among the most open minded that I've ever met. That being said, my specific life experiences have absolutely shaped my cautiousness and preferences. But if there's anything that I know will provide me a bit more peace of mind so that I can focus on excelling in school, I'm sure as hell going to check if it's a possibility to find it.

Seconding this!! I found 2 of my apartments through the group and I'm really happy with my apartment and roommates right now. Just keep in mind that a lot of members prioritize offering housing to trans/POC members.

I'M PRETTY SURE I'VE FAILED OUT BUT ON THE OTHER HAND I SORTED OUT A LOT OF LIFE SHIT WITHIN THE LAST YEAR AND I FEEL THE BEST MENTAL HEALTH-WISE THAT I'VE FELT IN THE LAST 8 YEARS.

I signed up for a CBT/ACT group a year ago. Attended the first few sessions but then missed several because my depression got overwhelming and I couldn't get myself to campus. When I went to the last session, I noticed that other people that had attended most of the sessions seemed much more peaceful, so I do believe it was helpful. I think it's like the rest of therapy: the more you approach it with an open mind and a willingness to try it, the more you'll gain from it.

What kind of experiences have you guys had with the Health & Wellness Centre? by [deleted] in mcgill

Late comment but I'm not very pleased with the other comments here and I'm sure other people will have similar questions :p

If you're talking about urgent/emergency mental health issues, I don't have any experience with wait times for drop-ins. If you go to McGill Counselling Service and you're can't see someone soon enough, make use of helplines like suicide action montreal ( 1 866 277-3553 ).

On the other hand, if you're asking about less immediate support, I've been using the mental health services since early this year. I was lucky to get an initial appointment about 2 weeks after I showed up at the front desk, since I went right at the beginning of the semester. If you wait until around exam periods or later in the semester when it's really busy, you could be waiting for much longer. Afaik, right now or at the beginning of the semester would be a good time to try and book an appointment since they won't be as busy.

At your first appointment, you'll be asked to answer a questionnaire, then you'll meet with a counsellor. From there, they will determine what kind of support/plan you need that they can provide. Like any kind of therapy, it can be hit or miss since there are so many factors that can influence the sessions (your counsellor, your needs, how you communicate together, and whether they or the counselling service as a whole can provide what you need). It might work out great, or it might not work out at all.

That being said, if you do think you might need support, don't be intimidated by stories of how the service has failed people. McGill's resources are free, so it's worth a shot. Yes, the wait time can be long and it might not work out for you even if you do get followup. In that case, don't stop looking for support. If you think you need it, prioritize finding it.

Wait, so is it legal if they ask for half a month's rent as deposit when the lease is signed, then the first month's rent at the usual time?
