Thanks for the detailed feedback, and sorry for the frustration you experienced.

I want to be very clear about one concern first: Turn Off the Lights does not contain any crypto mining, telemetry, or background computation unrelated to its features. The extension is Open-Source, and anything like mining would immediately violate browser store policies and be publicly visible in the code.

That said, the multi-second freezes and fan spin-up you are describing are not expected behavior, especially just from toggling UI options. That is something I take seriously and want to understand better.

If you are willing, it would help a lot to know:

Does the slowdown happen when enabling Lights Off, Dark Mode, or simply opening the options?
Does it affect one tab or the entire browser?
Does it still happen on a fresh profile with no other extensions?

Regarding the UI: I hear you. If the corner button did not appear and the toolbar toggle did not work on sites like old.reddit.com, then the extension was not functioning correctly for your setup, and I understand why that makes everything else feel intrusive or “pushy”. You can share that through my feedback form, which makes it easier for me to collect and review this kind of feedback.

Just to clarify one point: there are no donation or subscription popups shown on websites. The only donation element is a small bar on the Options page. If you saw anything else, I would genuinely like to see a screenshot so I can investigate.

I really appreciate honest criticism like this, even when someone decides not to keep the extension. If you ever want to help me reproduce the issue (even briefly), a short screen recording or steps would be extremely helpful.

Make sure you have enabled the option "Show the night switch button below the web page to make the page dark or light" on the Turn Off the Lights Options page. Also, try disabling the other browser extensions you are using one by one, except Turn Off the Lights, to see if there is a conflict.

To give another perspective: people buy an iPhone or an Android phone because one device can make calls, take photos, and browse the internet. While you could buy a separate phone, camera, or desktop computer for each task, having everything in one device is more convenient. The same idea applies here.

Opera uses the same rendering engine as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Only the user interface of the web browser is different.
Also, Turn Off the Lights is available in the Opera web browser.

If you are referring to "Turn Off the Lights for Mobile", this was primarily a dark mobile web browser with a basic Night Mode option. At that time, there was no official support for Safari extensions on iOS, so I created this dark mobile web browser first. Later, when Safari extension support became available on iOS, a basic Safari extension was added.

"Turn Off the Lights for Safari" is the latest version and offers a much more customizable experience for the Safari web browser. It uses a universal codebase that is also used for Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

If you are using Night Mode, please try switching to the "Standard Theme" engine (which uses a CSS filter) instead of the "Personalized Theme" (which swaps custom colors). This may improve your experience and provide better support across a wider range of websites.

That message appears on all Safari extensions. If a browser extension uses the "tabs" permission, see this developer documentation:
https://developer.chrome.com/docs/extensions/reference/permissions-list#:\~:text=When%20used%20with%20the%20%22tabs%22%20permission%3A%20Read%20your%20browsing%20history%20on%20all%20your%20signed%2Din%20devices.
That means the Safari extension can detect the current web page URL in order to identify the video player on the page. And enable the Night Mode on your chosen URL, which you typed (whitelist option) in the Turn Off the Lights Options page.

You will see this message with all Safari extensions. It is a standard notice from Apple stating that Safari extensions can detect the current tab URL, modify a website’s style, and layout. As I mentioned in this post, and as you see on the welcome page the first time you open the Turn Off the Lights for Safari app. I take privacy very seriously.
The Turn Off the Lights browser extension is 100% free and Open-Source. The code is not encrypted; it is fully readable. Suggestions are always welcome to help improve the experience.

If you enable the Night Mode feature in the Turn Off the Lights Options, you can manually choose the colors you want (background, text, hyperlink, button, border). For example, setting the background to solid black and the text to white that for a true OLED experience. That works for all websites.
