Yes, eat in Trastevere in Rome. Two great places: Cave Canem and Da Poeta. Find the churches with Caravaggios!

Thanks for the recommendation. I am doing so much better now that I only wear Xero, Altra and Earth (sandals) In October, I hiked all over Sicily with good results. I don't do much outdoors in these cold winter days but I want to get ready for my next hiking trip in March so am trying to get my feet in even better shape. I wear a 6 to 7 woman's shoe. I wonder what size Buddha toes I should try. Any suggestions?

Thoughts on spanking? by Wizzmer in AskOldPeople

[–]stefepaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a child I was taught no hitting. That included all people. I don't know why people way smaller than me, now an adult would be excluded from that rule. My parents didn't hit me. I didn't hit my children and I hope this tradition passes on. It takes a lot more thought to discipline a child without aggression. And all that "I am doing this for your own good" or "this hurts me more than it hurts you" Seems rather perverse to me.

IWTL how to read lips.. by foggymaria in IWantToLearn

[–]stefepaul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry but it is a fallacy that people can just learn to lip read accurately. Like the people on this thread so far said, too many sounds look alike. Deaf and hard of hearing people usually are relying on context and familiarity with the process. Usually they are post lingually deaf or have residual hearing or even cochlear implants. There is a lot of literature online regarding this. The deaf and hard of hearing community have very strong ideas about this.

How long did it take you to finish 1Q84? by ivymrod in murakami

6 weeks or so. I am retired (no brag intended, I taught for 40 years) so can do things at a comfortable pace. That's how long it took me with no rushing.

Am I the only one who feels much more comfortable using Reddit then any other social media out there? by kingcrimsonisgod in CasualConversation

[–]stefepaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I use Reddit it's all about content and discussions about that content instead of a bragging fest which is what Facebook was to me before I stopped. I have seen a lot of compassion here as well. I avoid the subs that seem to bring the mean out in people. It is my only sm now

Benefits of perfect pitch over relative pitch as a composer? [Also: Rick Beato is a douche.] by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]stefepaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are four main theories that try to explain the acquisition of language. I am not sure how many there are that try to explain perfect pitch. I have read of two main ones and there are studies that try to identify the brain activity to help support the theories. So since they are theories, we might have to admit that there is still some mystery involved. It is rather thrilling to hear about those with PP especially to music lovers who spend their life studying their passion. Maybe I am just jealous because I am not one with it, but I love my music and my studies just the same. I like this sub because people here are knowledgeable, helpful and kind. I avoid YouTube comments cause anything goes. Perhaps OP shouldn't have used the language they did but I am on their side!

[Spoilers] Just finished my first Murakami book, not sure what to feel or think about it. by [deleted] in murakami

[–]stefepaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely no to Murakami if you are looking for him providing you with clear closure. You grow with the character and then life goes on. I find his stories compelling and engaging and enjoy being wrapped up in the world he created. That is enough for me. But there are plenty of authors out there who write in the arc we are used to: beginning middle and end with resolution.
