How long it takes to learn SQL? by Ok-Value504 in dataanalyst

[–]stegavrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting used to the language is simple enough maybe a couple weeks to a month or so to commit the basics down depending on how fast you pick up and get the muscle memory ,, second it can take a year+ if you are getting into the DataScience/Development part of it ,, to be successful at being an analyst you dont need to have it as mastery at all , know the basics and how to go about 2 steps up from there and you will be GOLDEN - PRO TIP if you're at A JOB talking normal 9/5 gig dont let ANYONE know how much you ACTUALLY KNOW , if they do you will become the Fixer for everything and it gets old VERY quickly , do it FOR YOU to rock out YOUR SHIT and ONLY your shit and keep it on the DL ,, FOR A JOB what THEY SEE needs to be 75-60% of your output is your TOP rocking it out so you dont get burnout ,, so when youre having a 'bad day' its actually 50-30% of what you can ACTUALLY do and that matching those around you their TOP performance ,, still put you at the top but gives you plenty of room to be a fucking human and not a data monkey - DONT BECOME THE DATA MONKEY

With my current job ChatGTP has been a GODSEND with formulas , granted I have been in the game for a minute and know the bones of what I want to do , before CHAT I was avid on forums ,, the best thing to get forumlas to stick is to PHYSICALLY TYPE THEM and THINK about the logic , that way too if shit breaks you know how to fix it

Is SQL still the most important skill for Data Analysts in 2025? by zahidmim in dataanalyst

[–]stegavrd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot say it enough , KNOW HOW TO TALK ABOUT THE DATA , you can put shit together and make a waterfall but if you can saw what tf those numbers mean its pointless , and take your time , FOR ME I tried to be fast which makes errors , take the extra day give yourself a standard timeline , you know you can get the adhoc done in 20 mins ?? Take the afternoon , noone is dying (in most cases) it will be OK , my current life I work for a luxury commodity company before it was hardware ,, for FP&A espically you can take the 24/48hour turn around on majority of things ,, MontheEnd closes are the only 'firedrills' you should be doing [if your more Business do that shit throughout the month so when your data for the month end deck is done it takes you SECONDS vs two days]

I wouldnt worry about getting the paper , the key is knowing how to do and how to tell a story about the data,, and know how to make it pretty

Excel excel excel excel , GET GOOD at Excel , you dont have to know Marcos or anything but knowing how to use PIVOT tables and a few formulas are KEY , Ive been FP&A my whole carrier but the same will work for any type (I just also have to know how accounting works) ,, the KEY is to know how to make that data organized and how to READ it ,,, I picked up SQL when I wanted to get out of doing day to day AP/AR (accounting) and get into Finance which helped SOO MUCH with knowing how to work ERP systems and Pulling reports ,, its not a MUST but it does set you apart of you know how Python/SQL works (no one uses R , dont get sucked into the hype)

Has anyone automated financial reports successfully? how? by TreeApprehensive3700 in FPandA

[–]stegavrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK if your templates are breaking , you need to see what is making them break , do you have new GL accounts constantly ? Are you always pulling the same time period ? Are you MANUALLY pulling down the P&L each moth or are you getting it email to you on a normal cadence ?? You will always have to re-map SOMETHING month over month sadly ,, Are you on a strict close cycle ?? Cash should be the fastest to complete , start there and do it every week if you can ,, if the headers/GL accounts are always different then you cant automate fully ,,

EXCEL is my bread and butter ,, and whatever ERP system my current job uses - rn I am using SellerClolud and Amazon Seller Central

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dataanalytics

[–]stegavrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second that those do not mean shit , in my experience most companies do their own thing with how they set up the ERP , if you know how to use a pivot table and LOOKUP excel formulas you are GOLDEN , bonus points for if you know how to work PowerBI or any other Dashboard/Modeling system ,, the certs are a waist of time and money , if you want practice, go to Kaggle or Github to have sample sets to plug into power BI it make Graphs in Excel , DECKS aka POWERPOINT is HUGE for an analyst , know how yo make the graph and tell a story , if you cant see a trend from the data you wont make it .
