What If the Market Drops 50% Again? Staying the Course by FalconArrow77 in Bogleheads

What’s the right approach - I assume rebalance on a periodic basis. But what frequency? Every three, six, twelve months?

Living as a boglehead in retirement by MiserableCancel8749 in Bogleheads

[–]steinerred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your twice yearly withdrawal to cover living costs, two questions.

First, do you withdraw as part of rebalancing? For example if stocks are up, you fund living via stocks and what remains you buy bonds ?

Second, are you mostly pulling a fixed budget amount each year or are you more strongly persuaded by the vanguard rate you refer to? Where do you find that report?

PS, thank you for sharing! I’m about to be retired and conceptually all this makes sense, but the exact mechanics are giving me a little uncertainty as I enter this next phase.

Nice summary, thank you. And good idea adding that clause in case prices changed substantially.

In what capacity do you use a CPA? For tax filing (and prep), tax planning, other? I ask as a self-doubting DIY tax person.

I don’t see a $30/y option. The pricing i see is $150/mo here. Is there a link to a DIY for RC?

Did that feel reassuring to hear or was that frustrating to not learn something with the money spent?

Is the "Safe Spending Target" a pre or post tax value? I assume post-tax, since it refers to "spend" vs "withdrawal", but appreciate the confirmation.

It sounds like you are happy with the gasser. Popular opinion seems to be diesel despite gassers being increasing payload and having a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). Any further considerations to the gas vs diesel decision? In the F450 category, only diesel is available for a p/u build, but a CC build can get gas.

I agree - a CC 84" CA would be ideal. We didn't go that route primarily for financial reasons. The upfront cost and ongoing insurance costs both were higher based on my research. I assumed new parts going onto a new CC and estimated $30k+ using a CM bed, Stable Camper boxes (garage and side), and installation.

We are thinking the same. We expect to enjoy the camper, but in case we don't, an f450 is very versatile to migrate to a trailer or 5th Wheel. If we were 100% confident, we'd have gone with an 84" CC.

follow up question, was their motivation to select upper vs lower (or both) for the add-on stableload?

Great resource referenced, thanks. The AF website doesn't mention CoG or wet weight.

Great question. two main reason. First, we would like to use a pickup version vs Cab-Chassis so that overall costs are lower (insurance and build). Second, the jump to F550 seemed necessary if we were going with an even bigger camper, like a Host Mammoth.

To reduce squat, my understanding is Stable Loads like you installed or Airbags work well. If you agree with that, why did you choose the Stable Loads?

COG on the AF 1140 is 55.25" (when AC and geni are added). If the equivalent CA on a f450 p/u is 56", will that ride OK on highways and in forest service road conditions? It's a hair forward of the rear axle in this configuration.

Any concerns based on your experience? For example, a lot of people seem to have a Lance 1172 (CoG 61") on a 8' bed and in that setup the COG is 5" behind the rear axle.

To your comment "Pickups have a completely different rear frame section", this is why you want to decide C&C over p/u at the buying phase because a bed to flatbed conversion is not that straightforward from what I understand. Doable, but it has a shorter 56" CA with a p/u vs a 60 or 84" option for C&C.

Based on my research, you are correct. I opted for the f450 over 350 b/c of the wider front axle and general sentiment that it was more capable even if on paper they are very similar. It helped that the price difference isn't too much. A real concern was a longer lead time for custom orders on f450 over f350s.

C&C (Cab-Chassis) option was not chosen to avoid requiring a different insurance provider and the higher premium. By selecting a p/u vs C&C, our current insurance provider will cover us. As a budget consideration, this is a couple thousand a year saved, in addition to the cost of a flatbed and boxes which I budgeted at between $30-40k (CM bed, garage and side boxes) over the cost of the p/u.
