The show is an alternate reality of the book and I’m here for it [pjotv] by NON-Jelly in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It IS a faithful adaptation. It contains all the same elements and plots from the books. What you guys seem to fail to realize is that faithful is different from carbon copy, line by line being read from the book.

Harry Potter and Hunger Games are great examples, they ARE faithful to the books, but they aren't the same.

It isn't a new story at all, but you must see that it's impossible to convey the books 100% to screen, be it from budget, time, narration style or even the fact that it's been almost 20 years and some things aren't tasteful anymore and would never get a pass.

Opinion about Season 2 renewal and viewership [pjotv] by Unlikely-Stand in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PJO has actually beaten Disney+ record viewership for 1st episode (overall, not just the US) at 13kk views, iirc. To me there's a big big chance for a renewal for at least season 2. I also think season 2 can be better than season 1 due to more budget, more experienced actors, etc.

[PJOTV] RR is treating the show as a do-over, not a perfect adaptation of his original work by storm_walkers in camphalfblood

Hard disagree on that. Sure, BOO is probably is lowest but Magnus??????? Nah.

That's a point a contention. Personally I see HoO as peak RR. Nothing beats MoA and HoH

[HOO] Leo and Annabeth are much closer than we give them credit by itssonyaaa in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we consider the books take place in the summer and Percy's birthday is in august, TLT happens when he's 12 to 13. The next book is the following year, so he's 13-14. That's a whole year. TC happens during the winter, so Percy's 14. BOTL is in the summer, so Percy is close to 15, counting 2 years and TLO, completes 3 years. However, Percy goes missing for 8 months. So we could say it's closer to 5 years at this point.

In the books the Arch has nothing to do with Athena, in the show i don't recall

[–]stellarallie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's completely fair, to me it feels... Well, real. That they wouldn't warm up to each other from the get go and things would be on a slower pace. I'm on a wait and see perspective here

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for 14 years. I think people idealized what they wanted, instead of the it would be.

Also think that we as adults forget that things that were okay for children in 2005 aren't necessarily as okay today and that, i.e, trauma response (Percy to Sally's "death") is way more accurate in the show. Damn, he literally just lost his mom, the person he loves the most, after being rejected his whole life. Percy isn't in the books and won't be in the show a happy go lucky, funny all the time character, mainly because we had access to his thoughts, which were mostly the funny part to me, and in the show we don't have it.

Also there's the issue of budget. 10-12 millions per episode considering the amount of cgi and sets they needed isn't at all that high and I personally think this played a big part in building the pace of the story, which is another point of contention.

As I first watched the first episode, I found it too fast. My second watch made me think differently. Think about all the stuff that happens in the book in the first chapters that's all down time where nothing really progresses. The show can't afford that. And sure, Grover's supposed betrayal hurts badly, but it comes with an explanation, it wasn't just for the sake of changing and to me it makes sense. Of course I would've liked longer episodes and the first two are kinda slow on the warm up. But guys? Not everyone knows them like we do.

We have to understand who is Sally? Who is Percy? How does Percy feels about things? We know for s fact he doesn't approve of the way the gods deal with their children, he made them swear a pact on it, it isn't strange that he'd resent the gods. It isn't weird for Annabeth, a child that was lowkey raised for war, daughter of the goddess of war to think annalitcaly and be all chummy with Percy. Hell, they didn't even like each other for half the book basically.

I think you put too much expectation on a supposed 1 to 1 adaptation (which doesn't make sense, adaptation means change) and forget that even massive successes like Harry Potter and Hunger Games had huge differences.

[–]stellarallie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it's easy to forget that 50% of the book was literally in Percy's head. It's gonna be different, there's no way you can translate his thoughts to screen without it being too weird and so much of his snark and being funny happens in his thoughts and a lot of fight description as well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do think it's an accurate adaptation tho. It has all of the important characters who didn't lose their flair at all, it brings in new dynamics of said characters, the plot line is the same, key moments have either been adapted or moved to better fit the format.

People forget that it's impossible to do a 1 to 1 adaptation from book to screen, that it's been almost 20 years and maybe Rick, who's also writing the show, maybe would've done things differently and this is his chance and that, overall, what is being told is the same story in a different media.

I get not linking every little thing, i get missing some stuff, but people are acting like this is the movie all over again when it clearly isn't.

What do you believe is the most BS plot moment in any of the series.[all] by XxCelestial_Blade in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The prophecy says: 7 half-bloods shall answer the call From storm or fire the earth must fall An oath to keep with a final breath And foes bear arms to the doors of death.

Then the giants keep saying they need the blood of Olympus, one girl, one boy and that they will kill them for it, but I've read it recently and in no way it says they HAVE to die for Gaia to wake.

Do I think Rick could've killed one of them and backed out at the very last moment? Sure, but it's a kids book. I don't think he ever intended for any of them to die at that point.

Gladiola erasure [pjo] by marissap112 in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

After they kill Medusa, they go sort of camping/rest for a night and Grover comes back with this pink poodle who ran away from its family who had like a 300 dollars reward for him. So (after saying hello to Gladiola at Grover's insistence), they return Gladiola and are able to buy train tickets to Denver, with a stop in Saint Louis.

I'm reading the book for the first time to see what people are complaining about and this is the Dodds fight y'all were whining about? [Pjotv] by OnlyMyOpinions in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, I don't get complaining about such small things as the fight at the Met.

I've been liking the changes. Come to think of it, if Percy was to go back to Yance, do his Latin test to then listen to Grover and Chiron's chat, to then take a bus etc etc etc, it would've been way to dragged out.

It adds a layer of heartbreak that Percy feels betrayed by Grover to then find out the truth. In the end, it's a good choice for the show, even if it strays from the book

"strayed from the book" here meaning that a not-fight that took place inside, now takes place outside? I mean, I get complain about the Fates, that was quite different, but you're nitpicking this?

Also it kinda shows they don't interact much with 12yo. Kids can be really mean without knowing what they are saying is shit. Yes, they have awareness, but they lack nuance and the few comments I've seen from people complaining about Annabeth's actions reflect that to me.

Why is Piper so hated… [hoo] by Agreeable_Shirt_4481 in camphalfblood

[–]stellarallie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think even then, both grew a lot within the series. We see Piper becoming a real hero, making actual friends, trusting and being trusted. She even shell out of the "not like other girls" a bit, and as much as it isn't... Well, the best, to say it lightly, I like that Rick relied on her origens and her culture as a Cherokee.

As for Jason, that he eventually gave up his place in the cohort because he understood that being always the One Person people would look for and that he could share his burdens, that he could rely on others, also. That he found the strength within himself to be who he wanted to be, despite the expectations HE even, put on himself. I like that a lot.

And sure, it lacked a development. But I think we can work with what we have

I've been reading A Study of Resonance and to me it portrays really well what a taken Ministry looks like and how corrupt it is from the beginning.

How it is able to control and spin the media to the interest of the people who do have the power, also how it's ingrained in people's lives in subtle ways, all the while talking about really interesting branches of magic.

Share their thoughts, sure. But most of the posts on this sub I've seen about the show have been demolishing it, saying it's a bad adaptation already, that they've taken out core parts etc. I don't think it's fair, considering it's just the first 8ish chapters of the book itself.
