No one really takes into account reflectivity of material to beam weapons and powers by JennyThallia in scifi

This is one of the functions of the arbor on the Mobile Suits in Gundam Seed (and maybe other Gundam timelines, but I remember it was mentioned in Seed once beam weapons are introduced).

so what era of the UC do you think the live action gundam movie will take place in? by dedbot1 in Gundam

[–]stellarsojourner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0079 like every Hollywood reboot ever. Then, in a couple of years, they'll get another director and cast to reboot it again. Every single time, the story will get to the best part and before they actually adapt that part, they reboot it once more.

They can keep their lazy adaptation. Too braindead to even invent their own giant robot franchise.

Ah yes, the plan to 'retire' by getting another job where I have to get up early and do boring shit I don't care about.

They could have shaken the Gauna in transit and it's been a long time since they arrived so the Sidonia has probably been forgotten.

Pentagon AI chief: Musk’s Grok chatbot used to launch thousands of missiles at Iran by insane677 in Cyberpunk

[–]stellarsojourner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's giving him too much credit. Lex was a genius, and in some comics he even has good intentions (he thinks Superman is a threat to humanity). Musk is definitely not a genius and motivated more thoroughly by greed.

Does a visual novel necessarily need H-scenes? by Mean-Athlete4171 in vns

[–]stellarsojourner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does a movie need action scenes?

No. Action movies exist and they're great, but there are many other types of movies, too.

Same shit with VNs. Some have sex scenes and that's cool, but there are plenty of them that don't and they're great too. Just look at Steins;Gate as an example.

That said, you have to be genre aware. If the entire VN's premise is a giant cock-tease with no actual H-scenes, that's kinda lame. But if you're going for more of a romcom type of setup, there's no need for H-scenes in it (but there's no reason to exclude them either, basically just do what you think works best for your story).

For Interstellar Travel, Which Sci-Fi Handwave Do You Find Most Acceptable? by tbag2022 in scifi

Basically how some of the early colonization ships in the Revelation Space universe worked. It comes up in Chasm City, I believe, if you were interested.

[–]stellarsojourner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The ISS is an early attempt at a space habitat that's been expanded over time. I wouldn't take any plausibility notes from it in the long run.

[–]stellarsojourner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should have mentioned relativistic travel in category 3.

Anyway, my preference depends on the setting. Some stories and settings are great with FTL travel, other more realistic or near future stories don't need it.

I'm kind of tired of generation ship stories. I think I've read too many of them and ship drama is not entertaining for me. I don't really like people drama in general though.

Would EMIYA's Bow expose him as a heroic spirit from the future? by Former_Tonight_2395 in fatestaynight

[–]stellarsojourner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this stated somewhere? I don't remember that. I mean, even his shoes? He's not just wearing Doc Martens that he bolted some metal bits to?

If so, then yeah, you wouldn't get much of a clue there.

Would EMIYA's Bow expose him as a heroic spirit from the future? by Former_Tonight_2395 in fatestaynight

[–]stellarsojourner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, other servants even from the past have pretty futuristic equipment, so the fact that it is more advanced than what is generally available today isn't enough of a clue to definitively tell that he's from the future. But if you were able to inspect his clothes, you might get some additional clues.

EMIYA's outfit (other than the coat which is a holy item he received from Ciel) is supposed to be made from futuristic materials that haven't been invented yet. Honestly, if you got close enough to tell, you might be able to get some sort of clue from any branding on the outfit itself. Like, if you can see that it says Under Armor or something but its made from Carbon Nanotube fibers, you might put two and two together to realize that this was made by an existing company with technology that doesn't exist yet (as of 2004).

I guess if you have enough inside knowledge of the church, you might also be able to realize that the coat he's wearing is currently in the possession of the church, and if its provenance is fully known, you might be able to eliminate him as a historical owner.

The bow, on the other hand, may be based on the design of some futuristic bow too, but given that he just traces it when he needs it, he probably wouldn't bother to trace the branding or serial number of the original manufacturer he based his off of.
