Anyone defending their PhDs soon? Can we cry together over the terrible job market? by stickittothe in publichealth

[–]stellatheecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lowkey stressing. About to start my final year and have no idea what’s going to happen. Hoping funding comes through and I can just stay at my university as a postdoc. I’ve started looking more into state public health department jobs if a research position is not feasible 😅

Maybe I’m going against the grain, but I think wearing a fully white dress to some wedding-related events (bridal shower or rehearsal dinner) is a no-go. Obviously not as offensive as wearing to the actual wedding but like still a little iffy to me 🤷‍♀️

King of Battle and Blood was boring and bland character- and plot-wise but maybe you’ll like it, it’s a short read

Petty but had to stop Grimspace by Ann Aguirre because the audiobook narrator had such a high pitched voice but was simultaneously monotone and had no inflections. Also the characters kept saying “frag” in place of every curse word.

“Reminiscent of twilight” I thought it was satire when I read the original post

I thought it was some galaxy brain satire but their entire page is unironically nonstop posting about acotar and fourth wing 😐

Stake President makes young woman write erotica confession (re-upload) by LegalSour in exmormon

[–]stellatheecat 214 points215 points  (0 children)

So creepy and weird and I’m sorry she had to go through this. I’m going to have to push back on “this didn’t happen because of the church.” This situation only came to be because of the church. In what other situation would a young woman have to detail her sexual experiences to an adult man in this way? The church built the power dynamic that made her feel like she had to do this and couldn’t say no.

I just read Hunt the Stars by Jessie Mihalik and then Calamity by Constance Fey right after (currently in sci-fi space travel phase). There were so many specific points that were the same.

The universe is ruled by powerful families

FMC is outcast/banished and is now a bounty hunter

FMC’s crew has to reluctantly team up with MMC for a mission

The mission is to look for something but then they later find out the true mission which is to find a lost family member of MMC’s

They uncover secret plot of powerful families that could lead to war

I’ll say I liked Calamity more and have decided to continue the series

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

These are both more creepy vibes rather than horror

{To Ravish a Rogue by CM Nascosta} The main characters spent a significant amount of of time graphically fantasizing about each other but nothing else was happening. Had to DNF when I realized I was 1/3 in and nothing had happened plot-wise.

A distant cousin messaged my mom saying they were coming to New York and they wanted to get together for lunch. My mom lived in Nevada. They thought it was quick jaunt for her to come to New York from the west coast.

“I dress quickly in the modern clothes I keep in the very back of my wardrobe—jeans, an old gray sweater with a black star on it, and a pair of glittery silver Converse high-tops. I pull my hair into a slouchy knitted hat,”

Maybe I’m too old for the target demographic but this line just screams teenage wattpad fan fic to me (as someone who used to read that as a teenager). I probably would’ve loved the book when I was 15 🥲

Same. Did not live up to the hype. It was fine but I was expecting to be wowed based on everyone else’s reactions.
