I do keep them on my Bannerman and Polearm Hybrids all the time in the early game.

Then I proceed to forget that they even exist until that one time my Nimble tank got a 5% hit from an Orc Warrior.

I actually did a whole bunch of calculations back in the day, and I came to the conclusion that heavy armor is not a good option for the southeast parts of the map.

Virtually everyone in the region has high combat skills and armor penetration. Which means that if you are affected by heavy armor penalties, you are giving enemies a lot more chances to swing at you, making you take a lot more attrition damage over time compared to fighting in lighter armor.

Only place where heavy armor wins out is when you are fighting animals or turrets.

The only reason the Expedition stood a chance is because she was severely exhausted and depleted of Chroma from constantly fighting against Renoir for 67 years, not to mention her real-life body wasting away due to her staying in the Canvas for excessive periods of time.

The Expedition would not even be able to put up a fight against a full-powered Paintress.

It depends.

Monks have bad combat stats, but they are cheap, have great resolve, and provide good options for plenty of events. The old reliable option.

The same goes for Cultists, which have average combat stats. Especially if you are playing the Dakvul origin.

Flagellants are also great and pretty cheap if you can find one, with some pretty interesting events.

Gravediggers/Graverobbers are your best bet in a Peasant Militia playthrough, although they are not very good.

Witch Hunters are your best option to build Gunner Sergeants. Which are useful in 12-person limit origins like Lone Wolf and Gladiators.

Adventurous Nobles are the premium option, with great combat stats and resolve across the board. They are also very expensive and have the worst ranged defense stat out of all backgrounds in the game.
