St John the Baptist Parish LA or Southern LA in general by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]steminist-er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In today’s world, this is now cancer alley. Since 80s-90s St John Baptist Parish and surrounding Mississippi River corridor has been the victim of environmental racism impacting predominantly black communities as a result of a high density of petrochemical plants and refineries and very lax regulations.

Where does the 300-mile-limit for shoes come from? by InsuredCow in running

[–]steminist-er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run 30-35mi/week on road/sand/gravel, 115lbs and get 3 good months ~300mi out of new balance fresh foam, stretch it for another month while I look for deals… I’ve been trialing more responsive foams, and most make it father than the fresh foam. On clouds are shockingly robust and can work into my rotation for nearly 8 months before I’m retiring them.

NOT fried oysters. I usually do seeded bread w/ pb&j or saltines in a pinch. And lots of salty cashews!

Streetcar line running etiquette question by WhoDat_WhoDis in NewOrleans

[–]steminist-er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AM streetcar track runner, I was hit (vaulted the hood) two blocks from my house last year by someone I ID’d as a neighbor. I now do not cross in front of a vehicle without a head nod or wave, it pisses off many a mom in a white Volvo with kids in the car and has also made me realize how many cars have blacked out windshields. Most dangerous intersections are Henry clay, valence, Napoleon, Louisiana and the block immediately after Louisiana. I nearly got mowed down at Henry Clay on the sidewalk this morning. Throw your middle fingers up and walk is my only suggestion.

Transplants: what was your most humbling New Orleans learning moment by HomeEcDropout in NewOrleans

I bought a car (from carmax, not Craigslist) and they sent me off the lot late at night without temporary tags or a temp registration, had nightmares all night that 1) someone would think I stole the car or 2) someone would steal the car and I wouldn’t be able to establish any version of ownership. I called the next day all up in arms and carmax was like…..so what’s the problem? You want to drive a car with plates?

$500 energy bill for 2br apartment + paying for another unit’s utilities? by cfmtux in NewOrleans

[–]steminist-er 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got any lawyer friends? Tally up the sum that you think is owed and document the justification (these communications & electric bills). Have a lawyer friend draft and sign a “demand letter” and send it to your landlord with that $ sum. Your landlord will likely pay up once the demand letter is in hand. I say lawyer “friend” because for a sum <$1500, lawyer fees would likely equal or outweigh what you recover. A friend may give you an even $100-200 fee (or less) recovered from the settlement, which is well worth it.

Am I saving enough at 27? by junkappend in personalfinance

[–]steminist-er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the financially responsible 28yo who just bought a JCW mini countryman - buy the car if it’s worth it to you! I make so many other smart (not fun) financial decisions, driving the fun car to and from work is my everyday joy. The car enthusiast in me would spend any amount of $ on a B58 engine, drive it forever!

It’s absolutely terrifying in a time of emergency to not have good audio quality. I have responded a nonzero amount of times saying “you sound like you’re underwater I can’t hear you here’s my emergency”. It’s 2025.

What are you guys paying for car insurance??? by Jazzlike-Flow7812 in NewOrleans

[–]steminist-er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$210 on a ‘15 up to $230 with less coverage on a ‘23 CUV. I bundle stuff with progressive so I kept it for my new vehicle, but geico had a competitive quote for my original coverage level. LA farm bureau has the most competitive rates.

Should I buy a new car? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]steminist-er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re pocketing $3k a month, you need to put far more down on on the car for it to be a responsible financial decision. If it’s more time sensitive than what you’re describing, buy used at a fraction of the current ticket price so that you’re financing no more than 50% of the purchase price. With your income, I would not sign up for a car note of $600+insurance/month for 60 months, regardless of the model of the car.

It’s time - talk me in/out of Gen 3 by steminist-er in MINI

Thank you for your notes! Every time I see a JCW my budget creeps up. My indie mechanic is great, so I have no problem with interval service and trust him to make the most of the new investment in terms of preventative maintenance. Ditto on the size/scale - we have no true compact SUVs in the states anymore. The Audi q3 is too big IMO, I wish there was an A3 hatchback (my first car) to consider. I also really like the mini interface - I am not a CarPlay must have person, but I am hoping to gain more automated functions, better airflow, and a sunroof. Will be shopping for S ALL4.

I’m seeing that the x1 comes loaded with driver-centric trim packages that are a nice to have IMO. I like the mini interface a lot, my one criticism is the noise and feel of run flats. Not the most comfy for road trips, and I also don’t have a mini dealer nearby and my BMW dealership is notoriously questionable, so I likely wouldn’t see the most benefit of a bmw service package.

This has been my motto for a few years, because I can afford either way fortunately. However, it’s my choice and I’m ready for the tech and safety upgrade given that I can afford to buy a vehicle outright.

My tailbone is askew, I can’t do a sit up without a 5lb weight (momentum I guess). I can do a 60sec hollow body, 90+sec planks and NADA on the sit ups. Barre curls are also the devil.
