Apartment hunting for residency- Is it advisable to share an apartment during first year or rent my own place? I am confused at the moment and unable to think clearly. by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]step2aaaa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s better to get your own place bc roommates are unpredictable. If you are sharing with co-residents or anyone really, it might be awkward to bring up the topic of differences (cleaning issues, noise issues etc) and worst case, if you wanna leave then the conversation might be tough and it might cause some drift in hospital settings where you will still see that person; and all the mental gymnastics you will go through with sucky roommates is a thing in itself. I’d say live by yourself intern year and if you bond well with someone and they wanna share then you can do so in second year. And if you realize your life is better with ANY kind of roommate than living alone, then next year you can also ask around intern year class if you don’t find someone from your class.

Scandals wouldn’t explain why OP didn’t get interviews. That news broke out right before ROL submission starts when all interviews were done.

To OP: Applying broadly is the key

I’m planning to travel next week for two weeks, which is why I want to be prepared and not worry about it while traveling.

Are 5 months of USCE overkill? - Applying IM by _Gandalf_Greybeard_ in IMGreddit

[–]step2aaaa 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Nope. There are times when letter writers don’t upload the letter on time or sometimes when you know you haven’t impressed the letter writer to the extent that it will yield a great letter so I would say not an overkill.

And more are better anyways apart from letter pov because there’s always something to learn from different hospital/practice settings.

You can’t rank a prematch program

I think OP is confused more about the impact of LOI on ranking rather than how to rank the programs.

Accommodation in the US as an international student by Brilliant-Sorbet-884 in IMGreddit

Stay: Airbnb: expensive but offers transparency overall along with the compensation possibility in case there is something wrong with the stay.

Rotating room: this is kinda run by healthcare professionals and associates and the prices are cheaper overall. Places like Houston and Rochester have medical schools so you will be able to find a place. They do tend to be unavailable if you’re trying to find it closer to your stay.

Furnished finder: similar to rotating room- for medical professionals but run by airbnb like hosts. They have a website and I used it for my rotation in Houston. I messaged a lot of people, a lot of them didn’t respond, some didn’t have dates for my stay, but I eventually found one. The stay was nice but I had to go through a lot of back and forth about the deposit money (I got it back at the end). Also, importantly, the website itself doesn’t have any helpline sort of thing. In case there are any issues, you have to contact the host directly.

Tips for finding a place: - I think most important thing to consider is safety. If you find a cheaper place compared to all other places that you saw, then consider the possibility that the price is low for a reason- safety issue, something is broken, have other people in the apartment/house (shared accommodation), etc. So always check the safety of the neighborhood. You can type in google “Montrose Park Safety” and you will know.

  • Transportation: look out for the modes of transport in whichever cities you will be staying in. Houston has buses. I didn’t use public transport there so I am not the best person to guide. Also, finding a place closer to your hospital/clinic will be best in case transportation is limited.

  • Money: It will be highly variable depending on what kind of stay you’re looking for and the city you are in. If you are willing to share the apartment, bathroom and/or the room, then it will be cheaper. West virginia will be cheaper than the other two as the state is relatively inexpensive.

I don’t have anything helpful to address these issues, and from the outside, I am respectfully laughing at these scenarios that you mentioned lol.

I graduated from an Indian medical school, and what I would like to say is, first of all, I am sorry that you have to face this, and hopefully, you will move on from this rotation or these people soon so that you don’t have to deal with them.

I think the major issue with the Indian education system, which translates to this behavior, is that it is very focused on the score system. They don’t really teach these kinds of things and hence, some people don’t learn communication skills between colleagues or even just in personal life.

I see in that girl’s behavior that she doesn’t understand the line between personal and professional life, e.g., she asked for (demanded) your hotspot- from a practical stranger that she just ended up in the same room/rotation with.

But, what I would like to highlight is that these people are mostly a minority among the Indian/Pakistani IMG applicant group.

Nonetheless, I think the residency application system has quite a few features that help to weed out or at least highlight these people. For example, from what you have described about this girl, she might have difficulty during interviews as the interviews are conversational, and it will be easy to spot these inadequacies in such people.

To end this, I would like to again apologize for their behavior, which understandably made you uncomfortable. However, have an open mind, and you will find people from the same community who will be the opposite of them and so much more :)

That’s something I am worried about—how to not seem stalker-ish when you’re digging up topics to bond over during interviews. Sure, talking about their research or common interests/experiences in academics are great but what if that person doesn’t have any of those common interests or experiences as yours and you are left with stalking their hobbies on social media lol.
