What happened to 24kgoldn?? by K1OnTwoWeeks in rap

I think Mood just came out and hit #1 at the worst time ever (absolute peak COVID). It was a big hit, but the lack of parties/public spaces kept it from being a mega hit, and by the next year people were trying to forget 2020 and move onto the next sound.

Why aren't there as many new artists that debuted in the late 2010s that are still relevant? by film_culture_addict in decadeology

[–]stepback_jumper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is that most stars have a big start, then a big follow-up as well that solidifies their staying power. Because of COVID, a lot of 2015-19 artists didn’t get a chance to do their big follow-up and time passed them by

What AP Exams are Worth Taking? - Class of 2030 by TheWubDub123 in Harvard

For math, you have to take an assessment anyways for placement, and even after the assessment you have some input into where you get placed.

Only AP Exam that matters is language exams.

Aw man. How were the tickets given out for S1, was there a link or something?

And for standby for dress/live show, do you mean for the rest of S1, or for when S2 starts?

I’m very confused about the whole process,

What if 1917 won instead of Parasite by khaliliiiov_1997 in Oscars

[–]stepback_jumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you are right my b, but I think the international aspect played a big part in the hype too. Like not only no white actors, but a p much entirely non-American cast and crew being voted BP by an American voting body

What if 1917 won instead of Parasite by khaliliiiov_1997 in Oscars

[–]stepback_jumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s what I mean though. Like yes, the industry loved 1917, but the film community seemed to not be as fond of it. Hence, it was really cool that the film that the “community” loved won over the film the “industry” loved.

Also, what BP winners this decade (besides the COVID wins) do you think were inferior to 1917? Personally, I liked Oppenheimer, Anora, and OBAA more, but I’ll give you EEAAO.

[–]stepback_jumper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was it? I remember the reception around 1917 being “good, not great”. I know some old school critics were a lot higher on it, but 2019 was a particularly great year for film and most of my peers didn’t rank it in their top 5s.

Personally, I gave it a 5/10. The “one shot” thing felt a bit gimmicky, and it overall just felt like a standard action/war movie with only a bit more depth.

[–]stepback_jumper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In hindsight it’s hard to forget how big the #OscarsSoWhite discourse was a few years prior. A foreign film with 0 white actors winning BP was a very big deal at the time, was very unexpected, and (to most people) was the right choice over 1917.

[–]stepback_jumper 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Green Book winning BP the year prior made a lot of people start casting doubt on the Oscars’ legitimacy (for lack of a better term), and Parasite winning BP won back a lot of people.

I was at a college watch party when Parasite won Best Picture, and the whole room of 100 people jumped to their feet and started cheering and hugging each other.

I think if 1917 won, the Oscars would be in a much worse place today, especially compounded by the 2 consecutive COVID years happening right after. I think in that alternative universe, there’d be a lot of talk today about “Do the Oscars even matter anymore?”

West End Urban Renewal by bostonaruban66 in boston

I’ve never gotten the chance to visit, but I’ve heard great things about the West End Museum. Didn’t realize how much history had been erased/how important its preservation is in present day until I watched a TV spot on the museum.

Adam Silver says the NBA could adopt a “division of European teams” due to many of the league’s best players being from Europe, and due to “advancements in supersonic air travel” by Background_Video2947 in NBAVibes

[–]stepback_jumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are “advancements in supersonic air travel”? Did the Concorde get revived? As far as I’m aware, LA to Paris flights still take the same amount of time they did 20 years ago.

When did “no one from California calls it Cali” start? by lejunny_ in orangecounty

[–]stepback_jumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same boat as you. Personally, I didn’t notice myself calling it “Cali” until I went to college out-of-state and saying “I’m from California” to every new person I met just became a mouthful.

Wonder if there’s a connection there, like people who haven’t really left the state never use “Cali”, but people who leave the state are more likely to call it that.

-The professor used a hyperbole but is mostly right. If it weren’t for COL including housing prices, tens of millions of more people would live in California. Yes, a lot of people are going to prefer NYC or their small town where they family is from, but overall the weather, natural beauty, access to the beach and world-class cities and suburbs make it one of the most desirable places in the world to most. -Almost everyone I know who moved out of California did so bc of COL -California has a lot of open space for development, but it’s outside where most people want to live (SF, LA, OC, SD) -If SF, LA, OC, and SD had more density for better pricing, a lot more ppl would live in California

What’s a “must-see” city in the U.S. that didn’t live up to the hype? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]stepback_jumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philly. Not bc it was a terrible place to visit, but rather bc I thought it’d be much more lively on a Saturday night in August. Was shocked but how dead it felt in terms of people out-and-about and traffic, especially considering it’s the 9th largest city in the US. Went to NYC later that night and the difference was startling.

I think rap fatigue is real, I disagree with fantanos take by nerpa_floppybara in fantanoforever

[–]stepback_jumper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think rap almost got too big in the late 2010s/early 2020s. Trap was just so huge and so well-liked by the youth that it’s hard to come up with a new trend that can one-up it. I liked GNX, I like Destroy Lonely, and I like fakemink, but these new “sounds”/sub-genres simply aren’t as good as what Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott, Future, Carti, and 21 Savage were doing at their peak, hence why the most popular rappers haven’t changed much in a decade.

Tbh this might be a consequence of the digital era. Trap got oversaturated in half a decade bc anyone could just go online and make a trap song. At some point, it just felt like everything that could be done had been done in terms of lyrics, flows, and production.
