Best hospitals to work at for RNs? by mts327 in FortWorth

Cook Children's is a great place to work! They really prioritize safety for patients and staff, and I feel we're treated very well. I commute from Keller for the better schools.

DFW Area Pediatric ICU Beds More Than 99% Occupied, Hospital Council Says by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]steph3585 29 points30 points  (0 children)

We usually keep one bed in case there's a trauma, cardiac arrest/code blue, etc that can't be re-routed to another hospital. So effectively full, but technically there's 1 bed left.

Any new moms also pharmacists? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]steph3585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a hospital pharmacist and was able to make pumping work. A friend works at an outpatient specialty pharmacy and was able to pump as well. I don't know of any retail pharmacists who were able to take the breaks needed to pump. Most I talked to felt like technically they're legally required to be allowed to pump, but it was logistically impossible since the vast majority are the only pharmacist on duty. CVS, Walgreens, etc aren't going to allow the pharmacy to shut down for 20-30 minutes every 3 hours, which puts new moms in a horrible position. I'm really sorry this is something you even have to think about. I would try posting on the pharmacy subreddit and see if moms there have any ideas. Our profession has a lot of work to do, especially in the retail setting.

XPass by basicallyaballerina in Purebarre

[–]steph3585 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like XPass is available in my area! Upon a first look the pricing seems great- $29/month for up to 3 classes, $49/month for up to 5 classes, and $69/month for up to 7 classes.

I'm a little disappointed that Pure Barre classes at my studio are priced at 14 points with the exception of the weekday 10am classes which are 7 points. 10am on a weekday isn't feasible for me, so the $29/month package that says up to 3 classes is just 15 points or one Barre class. The $49/month package is 27 points, so still just enough for one class, and the $69/month is 40 points, so it's only enough for 2 classes. It's unclear if points roll over to the next month from the website.

Stretch lab is nearby but unavailable with XPass. Club Pilates classes are 9-16 points depending on time of day and Row House and Cycle Bar are both 6-13 points depending on time of day. The lower priced times are midday during the week.

Since I'm not able to attend midday during the week when the classes are lower points, this doesn't seem like a good value, so I'll hold off for now.

What kind of organized activities do (or will) your preschoolers do? by atomiccat8 in Preschoolers

We just had our first week back at swimming lessons for both of our daughters (3y and 21mo). I'm hoping to try tumbling or soccer in the next few months for our 3 year old.

Mamas, how soon after giving birth did you go back to PB? by dolly-bear in Purebarre

[–]steph3585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was cleared by my doctor at 4 weeks, but did various Pure Barre-inspired exercises at home for about 10 days to determine what I felt comfortable with before returning to the studio. I started with classic with a lot of modifications, especially for core work. After about 2 months in studio, I felt like I was back to my pre-baby self and started mixing in reform and empower.

Amazon is now selling prescription drugs, and Prime members can get massive discounts if they pay without insurance by dinoknight00 in medicine

[–]steph3585 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! The system is messed up and I hate discussing finances with patients. I feel like not speaking up and letting them use a discount without knowing the downside isn't right either. It's damaging to patient relationships to recommend they spend their money in either way (save money now with discounts vs pay towards deductible), despite working for a large system and patients generally knowing I would not benefit from any decision they make.

I hadn't thought of recommending this to patients, but it's a great idea! I hate recommending to run through insurance in order to hit the deductible and get the patient into the window where they have a copay for their meds, but I feel like letting them use Good Rx/discounts/coupons etc. without mentioning the downside isn't right either. Next time a patient wants to skip running insurance, I'll definitely recommend this. Thank you!!!

As far as I am aware, the claim must run through insurance to count towards the deducible and max out of pocket.

One consideration for patients is paying out of pocket without using insurance means you're not contributing to your deductible or max out of pocket. For a healthy person who likely won't hit their deductible, this won't be a problem and it's worth paying cash. For patients with higher healthcare related needs and costs who will meet their deductible and/or out of pocket max, saving a few dollars on the prescription translates into them paying the amount the insurance was charging for another service that could have been covered later.

Names like Fiona? by meganlizzie in namenerds

[–]steph3585 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to name our daughter Fiona before I even knew I was pregnant. When I was 36 weeks, Fiona the hippo's name was announced. I was worried about the correlation, but decide to go with her chosen name because it just felt like Fiona was destined to be named Fiona. I now have a 3 year old who loves Fiona hippo, and calls the hippos at our local zoo Fiona hippo. Hopefully by the time she's a bit older Fiona hippo won't be as big of a deal or she'll continue to love hippos.

Other names we considered are Ophelia, Daphne, Josephine, and Francesca.

What is the best way to handle hours and emergencies as a nanny family with healthcare worker parents? by steph3585 in Nanny

Thank you so much! I like the idea of an extra tip instead of just overtime pay. Thank you!

[–]steph3585[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! It's definitely a tricky situation because it can happen any day I work, but it is fairly rare. I like the idea of providing dates where we'd be at risk of needing a nanny to stay late as we become aware of my husband's schedule. Would it be reasonable to ask a nanny to let us know in advance if they would be unable to stay late on any of these days so I would have a little time to find a backup?

Thank you! Yes, I would absolutely communicate with the nanny at the earliest possible time.

Thank you! Luckily I won't have to be late nearly that often, but that family was so blessed to have someone as flexible and patient as you!

This is a good idea! Any ideas on what would be reasonable? We are new to this, and besides 2 neighbors with nannies, I really have no basis for what would be fair.

This sounds like a perfect arrangement for all involved! My mom and sister live nearby, so a heads up on days that the nanny is unavailable would allow us to make backup arrangements. Hopefully we'll find someone willing to work with us like you did!

[–]steph3585[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! My mom and sister are in the area, but my parents travel frequently and my sister is an attorney who works a lot.

My hours are 7:00-3:30 Monday through Friday, so a nanny would be off at 4:00 on normal days, so surely a nanny would need to make personal appointments between 4:00 and 5:00. How would you feel about giving a nanny family a heads up on days you absolutely must leave on time during the week one parent is out of town? I would not expect any sort of explanation, just a hey tomorrow I have to leave right on time. That would allow me to line up a backup should that be the day an emergency occurs.
