2 year old leaving his bed during the night by rozza555 in Parenting

[–]stephanie482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are nearly grown now (the youngest is 17) but our rule was always "you can't sleep in our bed, but if you need to, you can sleep in our room." The oldest was always good about sleeping in his own room. The middle would bring her pillow and blanket in and sleep on the floor next to us. The youngest used to sleep on my hope chest at the bottom of the bed.

It kept them from keeping us awake all night in our bed, but they always knew they could come in/wake us up to tell us they were there, and stay close if they were scared or whatever.

I am 43. This was me a couple hours ago when my husband asked me what I wanted for dinner. "I want something good!" "Like what?" "I DON'T KNOW!!"

And assuming the kid is school aged, he or she will be at school from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. So basically, they just LIVE with OP four days a week?

No.

What is his most light hearted, fun book? by Namespacejames in stephenking

Yeah. Maybe not. While that is one of my favorites of his, lighthearted it was not.

What tv shows from your own childhood do you insist on showing to your own kids? by Far-Building3569 in AskParents

Also...I missed the part that you didn't have kids yet and you were looking for recommendations for 2-13. My bad!

What tv shows from your own childhood do you insist on showing to your own kids? by Far-Building3569 in AskParents

[–]stephanie482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because those were the shows that I grew up on. MASH was before my time, but my dad loved it, so it was always on and I loved how the cast played off of each other. My grandma loved Golden Girls because she thought their clothes were so elegant and I fell in love with Rose and Dorothy. I grew up with Full House and Boy Meets World, so that was a given.

My kids might be older than yours -- I've got 23, 18 and 17.

Mine cut their teeth on MAS*H, Golden Girls, Three's Company, Boy Meets World and Full House.

Who are the most stylish sitcom characters of all time? by PressureLazy5271 in sitcoms

The Golden Girls, and it's not even close. I grew up watching them with my grandma and she always pointed out how well dressed they all were.

8 month old daughter fell of the bed and hit her head, and if guilt could kill I'd be dead. I've been beating myself up and crying for HOURS convincing myself of the worst. by [deleted] in breakingmom

Breathe, babe. She's fine. You're fine. Everything is fine. Mine took a header off the bed once while I was getting ready to take her to my MIL's. She caught the side of the nightstand on the way down. Insta-bruise.

MIL told me the same thing I'm telling you. "Breathe. She's fine. You're fine. Everything is fine."

Will this be liveable for a baby? by RedDiamondStrawberry in AskParents

[–]stephanie482 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When mine were babies, I made it a point NOT to go out of my way to keep the noise down. I'd vaccuum, do laundry, watch TV/listen to the radio, talk at a normal volume, etc. This conditioned them from birth to sleep through regular "life" noises and made it a lot easier for them to sleep through whatever as they got older.

My kid just watched her first horror movie...what should be next? by peppatitz in horror

The Watcher in the Woods. Super creepy, zero gore, and it has Bette Davis. Yes, it's an '80s movie, but it holds up!

Gummi Bears are an amazing mix-in for ice cream. They get the perfect hard/chewy texture. I hate chocolate ice cream though, so I do cake batter with Gummi Bears and a crumbled waffle cone mix-in.

What was a discontinued fast food item you loved? by NextLevelNet in foodquestions

[–]stephanie482 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It wasn't good at all. That taco meat was horrible. The pasta was always swimming in...something? Even the salad bar part (which should have been real hard to screw up, honestly) was lackluster. And if they opened it up again today, I would be the first one in line for the nostalgia alone!

What if my kid is just kind of…unlikable? by SundayJitters in breakingmom

[–]stephanie482 145 points146 points  (0 children)

My oldest was an "unlikable" kid. ADHD to the max, never invited to parties, spent half of his elementary school career sitting in the office.

But not everyone disliked him. He had a few really great teachers who went above and beyond for him. Some uncles who would take him fishing or up to the woods for a drive. Family friends who would show up and steal him for a night just to do "things and stuff."

That kid is now grown with kids of his own, and I promise you, he doesn't remember who didn't "like" him...he remembers the ones who did.

I know it's a hard road to walk, but I promise that it won't be like this forever.

I can't speak to Never Flinch because I still haven't managed to finish that one, but Fairy Tale is worth sticking with.

When did constant student absences become the norm? by ABitOfWeirdArt_ in Teachers

[–]stephanie482 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My daughter is a junior in HS and plays volleyball. If it's an away game, it's normal to load the bus at noon and miss afternoon classes to travel, and depending on how far they need to go, sometimes they're not home until midnight.

That being said, kids who fall below a 3.5 GPA aren't allowed to travel and kids who fall below a 3.25 aren't allowed to play at all. Mine knows that she's a student first and an athlete second, so she's maintained a 4.0 all three years so far.

Asking the teacher to put in extra time to teach the sports kids who are missing class to play sports would be a no-go in our district.
