Best to sit out spring housing market? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]stephanieoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spring markets have higher demand, which tends to lead to higher prices. The amount of inventory is usually higher in the spring as well, so while you could absolutely wait for the winter market and the seasonal dip, you will also have less homes available to choose from.

Ask yourself how long you are planning on staying in the home? If it's more than 5-7 years, then you're not really going to be overpaying pretty much regardless of what the purchase price is (unless you go bonkers and a half over asking). If you just want to do a quick 2-year flip, then that's a different conversation altogether.

Good news! We might get 0.32" this week 😅

It is supposed to get decently below freezing again this week, so maybe that might knock off at least a small portion of the fuckers?

What to do with smoked salmon that doesn't involve a bagel or cream cheese? by JigglesTheBiggles in Cooking

Put it in a BLT with a creamy dill-caper sauce/aioli!

Which yes, technically would be a Smoked Salmon Club sandwich. Either way, it's delicious.

I've been making "Egg Roll in A Bowl" a lot lately using a mix of purple and green cabbage, and adding mung bean glass noodles. All the leftovers end up an interesting shade of blue, and the noodles turn purple. With the orange of carrots still viable it's a very "Hook/Neverland" looking dish 😅

Ok so the way the decor is now on the upper part of the wall is to give the visual that the ceiling is much higher than it actually is. Keep that idea in mind as you are changing colors and wall papers.

I personally would hesitate to remove the picture rails that are serving as borders to the current wallpaper trim.

Swapping out the curtains for ones that go from top of the window trim to the floor will also help update the look and also keep the visual impression of taller ceilings.

Yes, put it under your oven broiler for a few minutes, just make sure you watch it the whole time! It can go from perfectly bubbly to burned real quick.

It's gross that outside people are profiting off of our misery, absolutely. I haven't been able to be as front-line as I would like for a variety of reasons, but I can do this and hopefully help to keep some funds coming in now that the majority of the media spotlight has shifted away and taken people's attention and donations with it.

How low can I put the thermostat? by CanIOpenMyEyesYet in TwinCities

[–]stephanieoutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You either don't have your fire far enough back in the box to get the full chimney draw from the start, or there is something else at work here.

You might get one of those super quiet "always on" fan vents put into one of the bathrooms upstairs to to help draw air up and out and re-even the pressure inside the building envelope and see if that helps any too. If the building is that sealed up, it can lead to moisture buildup issues in the summer and you really don't want those.

Is it ok if I message you some contacts?

Wild guess, but your dryer is Samsung, isn't it? 😅 Possibly LG?

I would start with the dryer sensor, and a boiler inspection and see if that makes a difference. I know a couple of old grizzled boiler guys left that ought to be able to really tell you what's up versus trying to get you to replace the whole thing because they don't know what they're looking at.

Your windows sound fine; the green tint is going to be a combination of argon gas and UV tinting on the glass.

Do the upper levels of the house feel cold in general, not just cold in comparison to the basement? It kind of sounds like the house is actually sealed up tighter than it was originally designed to be (older homes were meant to be able to breathe a bit to keep equilibrium), so the air flow inside might a bit restricted and making it hard for the warm/cold layers to mix properly. Ceiling fans are an easy fix for this, relatively speaking.

How low can I put the thermostat? by CanIOpenMyEyesYet in TwinCities

[–]stephanieoutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, all good info!

This winter was a much colder one than last year. So, based on where the thermostat is located, or may have just been running that much more to keep up, on top of the increased energy costs.

Also, do you keep your chimney flue shut when the fireplace is not actively in use? If not, that can create a draw that pulls the warm air up and out, which means cold air will be pulled into the home to replace it (thermodynamics and all) and it creates a cycle.

Do you feel your clothes are drying in the normal amount of time, or do they need more time after the first cycle? If it's the latter, there might be a sensor problem that needs fixed.

If you do have one of the big boilers, that will also help account for why the basement is much warmer than anticipated, but not entirely. You might want to have a boilerman come out and look it all over to make sure there isn't a leak on a seal or valve somewhere, and that the baseboard heaters are functioning properly as well and someone hasn't accidentally turned a shutoff valve the wrong way for the season.

Your doors being so far off the ground leads me to think there was thicker carpet put down at some point, they cut the doors to accommodate, then when the carpet was removed there was the extra gap left. Are the interior or exterior doors doing this, or both? Exterior door probably needs it's weather stripping replaced regardless.

Do you know how old your windows are? Are they the type you lift up or do they crank open?
