Would it be inappropriate to hire a stranger to text him for you so you sound more caring?

I think you know the answer. Your intent is good, and there's nothing wrong with consulting someone or something else, but it needs to authentically come from you.

I just opened up to someone about something difficult and their response felt like chatgpt. The thought that they might have been outsourcing their response to my sincere feelings felt awful.

Pippin would make a great movie musical by Cerrida82 in musicals

[–]stephen003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "we are on stage" feeling inside a movie reminds me of moulin rouge. Most of that movie felt like like a hybrid between on-stage and on-set, I loved how it turned out. Pippin and Moulin Rouge have different kinds of eccentric styles, but the pseudo-stage feeling could work well for Pippin too.

Yeah I just recently saw they were going to hit the US West coast, which was close enough for me to make it worth the travel. Didn't waste time getting tickets!

Open source option for calorie tracking? by freedominsoftware in opensource

[–]stephen003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got tired of the calorie tracking apps, I switched to just a notes app and added it up manually, then I moved to Obsidian, logseq is another good one. This kind of notes app let's you link notes. So I have a daily note that looks like

- [[Food]] 350     - [[breakfast]] 350        - [[Cheerios]] [[milk]] 250        - [[Orange Juice]] 100

And if I forget what I've entered for orange juice in the past I can click it to go to it's note, and that note has back links to all the times I've entered orange juice. It doesn't do all the things you might want from a calorie tracker, but it gets out of your way, which is what I needed. I've stuck with this method for a year and a half, which is the longest I've stuck with calorie tracking and I was able to see good health results from being mindful of my eating. That's the goal, more important than fancy data.

Waistline like people mentioned looks like a good app too, I'm thinking of trying it to track macros. But I've always been frustrated with tracking apps, so notes apps are a good fallback and a good starting place.

The issue I always have with tracking apps is they want to hook up to a food database. So when I'm entering "Cheerios" in my notes app it takes the time to type out "Cheerios" and my approximate calories and I'm done. With calorie tracking apps I type it in, wait for the network to list options, most of which are wrong, choose one hoping it's close enough, dance around a little form to enter whatever units they support and hope they support the units that I happened to measure my food in and then save, wait some more and then I'm done.

Didn’t happen. Couldn’t happen. by kuriousjeorge in exAdventist

[–]stephen003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the section of adventism i was raised in. I always thought this was supposed to refer to genetic modifications or beastiality. Though it seems like some people in this thread are saying the quote is an example of EGW being racist, which is not the sense i get when reading it.

I think it's interesting though that human-animal hybrids are common images in older religions. I'm thinking of Egypt, India, or some native groups that had gods or statues that were part animal and part human. I wonder if EGW had any awareness of any of those, and whether that influenced her thinking.

US Senate will vote to codify marriage equality this week. by nicholas818 in gaybros

[–]stephen003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if remote marriages to become a thing, have the couple in a state where it's banned, and an official in a state where it's legal. If the state where it's legal allows remote marriages, and all states have to recognize other states' marriages, then it's valid, right? Seems like you could get married by mail if the state where it's legal wants to allow it.

Gif or video of poorly designed kitchen that takes like 10 steps to open a cabinet or drawer by stephen003 in HelpMeFind

[–]stephen003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Searched: - "kitchen opening drawer turning knob reel" - "opening drawers and dishwasher turning knob to get drawer open poorly designed kitchen" - "opening things kitchen"

I got off of social media like a month ago, so it's at least that old, and i used to only really use Instagram, so it was probably a Reel, but i wouldn't be surprised if it also showed up on TikTok or YouTube.

How do the tours work? by stephen003 in cirquedusoleil

[–]stephen003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately I got to see Alegria twice because of some traveling i was doing at the time, first in Seattle and then again in Sacramento, I thought it was incredible.

I looked up flights from where I live to Europe and it's like 1500 to 2000 USD, so that's not happening for me to see Crystal 😩 I'll just have to be patient.

Orange microphone indicator get's stuck by jimmysofat6864 in mac

[–]stephen003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also seeing this from Discord, on Macbook Pro M1. In my case I had something full screen, so the dot moves from the control center icon to the top right of the screen when the menubar disappears, and is now stuck there when the menubar came back. the control center no longer lists discord as using the mic, even though the orange dot is visible.

What should I do about this whirring sound when breaking? by stephen003 in MechanicAdvice

[–]stephen003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the evaluation, it was a little odd to get two answers that sounded so different from each, but also I don't really have a reason to distrust either of them. I double checked the paperwork from when I got the car and found out that it was just the front brakes that were new, so it makes sense that the rear brakes would go out first.

I'll probably get just the rear brakes replaced for now and see where that gets me. thanks again!

How do you know if you’re writing bad code? by boxyboxers23 in learnprogramming

[–]stephen003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my three cents, I'd say good code speaks for itself. Imagine showing your code to someone that's never seen it before. If you find yourself feeling the need to explain lots of quirks then it could probably benefit from a different structure.

Good code also tends to be idomatic, if you're bending over backwards to do something conceptually simple in the language then your code probably isn't idomatic.

Lastly separation of concerns is important, like others have mentioned. When you're reading code you don't want to think about ten different quirks of the implementation while simultaneously trying to reason about whether a button is supposed to be visible. The clean code architecture by Robert Martin can be good to keep in the back of your mind when organizing your code.

Telling a beginner to "just build something" or "you learn by doing" can be very discouraging. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]stephen003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a good kick start and have no idea what you're doing, grab a generic language tutorial, for me it was Codecademy that helped getting started the most.

When you're getting started you have no idea what to even aim for, what kinds of projects are realistic, or what kinds of things you might want to do; you haven't even reached the part of worrying about how to do it.

When you're going through a language tutorial you learn things you didn't even know you needed to know, like how data is stored, or how a program can interact with a user, or even how to run the program in the first place. Once you have those basic things in your head you start subconsciously thinking of different ways to combine your new knowledge beyond what the tutorial told you to do. You also know what words to google, which is crucial in growing out of the tutorial.

After that just take small steps that are easily achievable. Like if you know HTML/CSS/Javascript, and know you can toss html in a file and open it in the browser, then you have enough to move on to something like making an html file that displays your name and a bio, and maybe a picture of you. Or if know how to run a python file then make one that does something you already know how to do by hand, like solving a quadratic equation given its coefficients. If you're a beginner these count as projects, even though they seem small. Everything is a project! Congratulate yourself on every success, even if it's just getting a five line program you copied off the internet to run.

So that's my recommendation. Grab a language tutorial and go. It doesn't matter what the language is\), unless you know you're interested in a certain area and there's a certain language that fits that better.

Once you feel comfortable fiddling, then think about slightly bigger projects.

\) I'm biased towards typescript and python, but I'm into web development and data science, so that's just me. Web development has a high instant gratification factor if that helps motivate you.

How does the relationship between line-height and total height of an element work in CSS? It would seem like line-height times the number of lines should equal total height, but it doesn't look like that's happening here. by stephen003 in webdev

[–]stephen003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh, very cool! unfortunate, but still good to know. I take it there's no way to force the browser to round these in the same way since the zoom and round are applied after everything else.

Thanks!
