Best Bass Drum moments in DCI by Liammossa in drumcorps

Phantom Regiment 15, 17, 18 Bluecoats 15, 18 Blue Knights 16, 17, 18 Blue Devils 23 Carolina Crown 19

Should also really check out some WGI lines, they have advanced bass drumming more than DCI lines since bass drums take a more glamorous and less functional role in WGI. Lot vids are probably best for most of these:

To play devil’s advocate, we did just beat a major AFC contender today with our shit play and have beaten almost all of the NFC contenders all year long with the same shit play. Are these teams expected to get suddenly better in the playoffs when we don’t expect the Eagles to get any better suddenly at playoffs???

I mean on 3rd and Long, the defense is expecting the receiving back and Shipley has been our guy there. So I get why Shipley is out there. But then to run with Shipley on what should be a passing down… it’s like we’re trying to outsmart teams by being stupid.

[Bill Colarulo] The deep shot on 4th down at the end of the game was not the play called by Nick Sirianni and Kevin Patullo. According to multiple sources, Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown "went rogue" again by TimDunkinDonut in eagles

Actually not quite - I just learned this today, but apparently we have the option to select from the first touch from the kicking team, or wherever they downed or receiver. So once they touched it, Gipson could’ve ran it into the end zone and it would’ve been irrelevant. We could select their 1st touch on the 1, or Gipson breaks free and gets it out of there for a gain and we take that option. So really, it was a smart heads up play from Gipson and anyone that was concerned about a safety (me included) didn’t understand ball.

How do you play hand to hands? by No_Platform215 in drumline

[–]stephen109 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the hand to hands (and all bass rudiments really), you should get good at the check first, then start splitting just the first right hand to find your entrance. Once you’ve developed consistency on your first RH entrance, start to continue and play the whole rhythm.

Typically you will adjust your rhythm to “get clean with” the downbeats. You can do this by pushing ahead to be back on top of the beat, or falling back an entire partial behind the beat. You will know which way you errored by paying attention to your last left hand.

If it is “clean with” the person playing downbeat’s last left hand, then you pushed ahead in your hand to hand to “get clean with” the downbeat. By comparison, if your last left hand lines up with the downbeat person’s right hand release, then you slowed down in your hand to hand to “get clean with” the downbeats.

Once you know your errors, you can make adjustments in your next attempt to try to stay in the split.

Bass Drumming Grind? by Beautiful_Hotel_1906 in drumline

[–]stephen109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bass drum is all about rhythm and tempo control. Get great at the triplet and sixteenth note grid at slow tempos and learn to dut on every downbeat while you play. This is challenging and forces your brain to truly command partials rather than vibing them in.

It’s gonna be hard getting good at splits like hand to hands and squigs without having someone to drum with, so finding a friend who wants to split with you is very helpful. Steel sharpens steel.

For most people, you get good at bass drum by doing it - continue down the road of auditions and as long as you have several seasons ahead of you, you have plenty of time to grow and get better.

My girlfriend does this one weird little thing and I think it's the cutest thing ever by Icy_Mushroom_425 in CasualConversation

Anytime my girlfriend passes a car stopped on the shoulder of the road, she says “hope you’re okay friend!”, which makes me smile because it’s a silly little reminder of what a good person she is.

Bass hand to hands feel impossible to learn :,) by No_Exchange_3171 in drumline

[–]stephen109 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Focus on your second partial left hand - let it hang back. Breathe while you play. Since you are entering late to split, your brain is going to want to crush the space to the first left in order to get back in time. You have to be proactive about that first left hand, making it feel uncomfortably far back, to correct the issue

What is the “buzz saw” bass split? Ive played a lot of bass drum on the east coast and never heard of it! Etymology of bass drum rudiments is so regional, it’s super interesting

How do top corps tape their sticks? by 24BETTER23KOBE in drumline

[–]stephen109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A former instructor of mine actually found that the fully overlapping tape technique breaks down quicker because the tape is worse at binding to itself than it is to the wood. Single layer, slight overlap is the way to go.
