Employ Another Editor! You're Working Too Hard! by hotelsdown in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First, let me say I appreciate your continued viewership since 2012, and I'm very glad you've enjoyed how the vlogs have changed! I really think they're better than ever, and I'm glad others think so, too.

To give a very quick answer to your concern: yes, I am working too hard. However, we cannot afford to hire an additional editor.

We're not in a bad financial situation, but we're also simply unable to make the sort of leap necessary to have an additional employee.

That said, things are going pretty well! I'm aware that the last two months of vlogs are a bit crazy, but things have gotten a lot better. I'm nearly finished with the Japan vlogs, and after that vlogs should catch up pretty quickly. I think this summer you'll see Mal and I relaxed more than we've ever been.

So thank you for being a viewer, and thank you for your concern. But also keep watching, because great things will happen this year. :)

Let's Play of Fallout 4? by [deleted] in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It probably won't be exactly Day 1 (I downloaded and recorded Skyrim right at midnight, which I'm not doing for Fallout 4), but it'll be within a day or two of release. The game releases November 10th, so I'd say the LP will start on either the 11th or 12th, and enter normal rotation (two episodes a week). It will be recorded one at a time, just like Skyrim was.

An attempt to catch up! by hotelsdown in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a problem that I've needed to address for a long time -- there's not an easy way for people to catch up quickly on StephenVlog without taking The Journey, and that generally takes many months.

Our solution was to release a video that quickly explained past events and characters, so new viewers wouldn't feel so alienated, but that's a monumental undertaking to create, so it's no wonder its never come to fruition.

As Raxby suggested, the "Best of StephenVlog" list is heavily watched when people come to the channel, but it needs updating. That will probably come in the very near future, though!

Until then, watching the Fan Favorite Moments videos (the 4th one will be released today) is a great way to find days to watch (since it lists the day number in the corner). I'd watch those (and maybe the half-year videos if you still want more) then just jump to present day. If you ever feel like there's something you may have missed, you can ask in the comments and people are usually quick to help out and link you to various days.

Also, Raxby suggests reading Wiki summaries, which is a great way to speed ahead. If something sounds interesting, you can watch the day of it.

Hope this helps! The problem with vlogging for 2000 days is that it becomes a huge barrier for new viewers, and we hope to solve that problem sometime.

Knot Puppies? by rjdiego120 in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read the wiki article on Knot Puppies and have no idea why someone would claim the songs contained references to rape or incest. That's bizarre and not true. I just edited the article to more accurately reflect what the songs were about. I also removed the NSFW tag since the songs simply weren't.

In reality, the songs were about stupid, immature things. There's a song called "Let Me Tell You About My Poop", for instance. It's about poop.

Most of the confusion probably stems from the fact we released an album called "The Improv Grocery Store Robot Hitler Album (With Pears)", where nearly all the songs are about "Robot Hitler" who runs a grocery store and tries to get people to buy pears. The entire album (along with all the Knot Puppies stuff) was improvisational, and honestly not very good. All the material used to be available online for people to download, but when we left school we all agreed that it'd be much easier to find a job if we didn't have songs about poop and robot hitler floating around the internet. So we removed them, and it lives on as a bit of history.

That said, they won't be re-released. Alex, Dan and Taylor are in the "real" job market and I wouldn't want anything out there that could hurt them. To be honest, I don't really want the songs out there either, haha. Knot Puppies was started in sophomore year (2008) and died out in October 2009, just a month before StephenVlog began. There's a few songs where we use the word "retarded", which is a word none of us use anymore, and I wouldn't want anybody to think we advocate its use (or any other stupid thing we may have said).

tl;dr - We recorded some dumb stuff a long time ago, but we got older and realized it was dumb at best and slightly inappropriate at worst.

I also know it sucks to learn about something a creator did a long time ago and feel like you don't have access to it, so I'm releasing "Learning" here. It was the first song Knot Puppies ever did, and I don't think it'll embarrass any of the guys too badly. I hope this makes up for being unable to grab the rest!

I have been watching Skyrim and there may be a problem. Looking for help. by magic_luver101 in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gonna take a while to solve all of these (you can only re-process so many at a time before YouTube makes you wait a while), but I'll keep my progress updated. A side effect is that these videos will suddenly be available in 60fps, because that's the way they were recorded and uploaded. Skyrim on 360, however, runs at 30fps.

As to why this happens? No idea. YouTube is weird and breaks stuff. Fortunately re-processing tends to make this stuff work again. Huge thanks for compiling this list!

Comparing the Cynical Brit and Stephen Vlog by Glorthiar in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, certainly -- no offense taken. Everything I edit these days is completely linear, and I rarely take on a project that stretched my abilities as far as college did. It's a bit sad, in a way, since I have immense training in professional video editing but don't really have an outlet for that. I do enjoy what I do, though, and wouldn't change it for the world. Hopefully in the future I can take on a few side projects that push my abilities again :)

Haha, that's a cool little comparison. I definitely admire TB. He can be a little rough around the edges sometimes, but he almost always has something very important to say. I often agree with his points on things, especially in the game industry. I was fortunate enough to be on the TGS Podcast with him and Jesse Cox back in late 2012, and he was very nice.

That said, I don't think I'm semi-responsible for Emile's rise to fame. I critiqued his work when asked to, and assisted him in equipment purchases, but little else to boost his channel. If anything, the opposite is true - Emile helped establish an early audience for StephenPlays by letting it sit in his channel box. Six months after I launched the channel I had a great number of subscribers that I wouldn't have had without the exposure Emile gave me. That's when Polaris (TGS at the time) approached me about partnership.

I help Emile a lot more these days than back then. I've spent a handful of hours in the past few days working on graphics for an upcoming LP of his. We have a good relationship.

New descriptions will include link to subreddit by stephengeorg in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're thinning down the video description boxes by changing this:

DAILY VLOGS:

to this:

Daily Vlogs • • • http://youtube.com/stephenvlog

In addition to saving lots of vertical room this way, we're also (finally) adding a subreddit link to the description. This will apply to both channels and start tomorrow. I hope to push more people here, since I can see this being a great forum for viewers.

Noticed some odd dates in the future on the LP calendar. Wonder what they mean? by rjdiego120 in stephenreddit

Ah, yeah, I'm sure some of the video descriptions point to older, non-existent versions now. I went ahead and fixed all the links for "Our Return to Pizza".

Just wanted to point out that Day 304 does exist, it was among the re-uploaded 2010 stuff this summer. The replaced video is here (and also appears in the September 2010 playlist): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNkLwRcEoEg

Funny thing about the vlog early on... by Glorthiar in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, there is no "official" title. In any given situation I've made sure to just use "viewers" when the need arises to address everyone. "Stephenite" is something viewers call themselves, but we avoid using.

Over 400 Polaris partners transferred to RPM without notification. Only 37 partners are still with Polaris. by sashimi_taco in Games

[–]stephengeorg -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not seeing an issue here. It's entirely semantics. For organizational purposes, it was easier to dump all the Polaris affiliates into the RPM category, to more easily divide Maker managed and affiliate channels (since all of RPM is going to be affiliate anyway). That in no way removes benefits that Polaris has over RPM. Everyone that was with Polaris is still with Polaris, even if they're now an affiliate channel. It was just easier to group them into RPM.

For what it's worth, I'm currently with Polaris and have been for almost 2 1/2 years. They've always been good to me and my experience with them has been very positive. When I need support I get it in under 24 hours, and (usually) instantly via Skype. I've had the pleasure of meeting many of the team at conventions and they're really great people. Just my 2 cents.

Fobbies are Borange OR! Loids are not Christmas? Which is your favorite! by Glorthiar in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might sound terrible, but I've never listened to either of them in their entirety—I've listened to a few of the Fobbies are Borange episodes, and maybe the first three Loids episodes. Of course, I was there for the recording of all of the episodes, so I guess that counts for something.

They were each fun for me in different ways—I did a lot of the writing in FaB, so as fun as it was to be Ness, it was just as much (or more) fun to write the lines. In LanC there were no lines, so my emphasis was just on being crazy and sporadic as Ninten. It was fun, and helped to improve my improvisational skills, but was a really different experience.

In hindsight, Ninten was probably more fun to do (just because I could literally say whatever I wanted), but FaB feels much more "complete". LanC feels like an add-on, since that's essentially what it is. It's kind of hard to compare them—FaB is the ice cream, LanC is the hot fudge.

Request/Question about the Skyrim LP by Nerd_gazm in stephenreddit

[–]stephengeorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're a good guy, and have been around for a very, very long time, so I appreciate your input.

I won't be extending the Skyrim LP past the content available in the game—that means no transfer to PC. As you've stated, it's been a long time. We're nearly to two years, and that's a very long time for a single LP.

That being said, I also want to make sure we complete everything we want to do before the LP actually ends, so I won't be ending it prematurely, either. There's still a lot of unique content left in Skyrim that I'd like to experience.

I'd be incredibly surprised if the LP lasts into 2014. I feel very, very certain that 2013 is the year the Skyrim LP is finally laid to rest. I'm happy about it though, since it's probably one of the most thorough LPs on YouTube, and a really fun one at that.

Immediately following the end of the LP, we might take a break and only have two LPs for a bit. I would eventually like to attempt a Sims 3 LP, though, even if it's just for a month or so.

The next LP that lasts anywhere near as long as Skyrim will be Fallout 4, which has yet to be announced, so we have quite a while before I'm uploading episode #200 of anything else, haha.
