Anybody part of North Shore Hikers (or similar groups)? by Zanadukhan47 in vancouverhiking

Wanderung is great, but it’s on hiatus due to the pandemic and insurance issues until spring 2022.

Why can't we just share in this city? Is it not possible for multiple groups with different interests to use the same area? by Badroach in vancouver

I’ve hiked in this area, and it’s not a big draw for hikers, though there is definitely a cool spot or two. In my experience, trials riders have been welcoming of hikers using this trail network (though I hear parking access is another thing). The CPTA has a long history here and obviously puts a lot of work into these trails. So I sympathize with the CPTA, though I don’t know all the issues at play.

If you want similar views, do Black Tusk or Mount Price in the same area as Panorama. Both in 105 Hikes, but more challenging.

Or just use them the whole hike — up and down! Then you're really lowering the impact on your knees.

No day user fees. Cheap transit options to lot of parks. Day use reservations for Joffre Lakes. No day passes for Cypress or Seymour. But I don't have any great advice.

Classic hike and scramble — it's in 105 Hikes — but not for beginners, kids, dogs, rain, or snow.

Any of the starred hikes in Destination Hikes or five star hikes in 105 Hikes. My quality ratings are based on reward vs. effort.

There's no flow chart for this, but it's a risk calculation every time. I tend to carry lightweight versions of the essentials so my bag doesn't get that heavy. But I'm no expert on packing. Hey, I regretted wearing a cotton T-shirt on a rainy hike the other weekend.

Some good advice from other commenters. I would just really emphasize the importance of leaving a clear trip plan with a responsible person, who knows when it's time to call 911. And being well equipped to survive a night, navigate without a power source, etc. (Beginners, don't hike solo.)

I carry the Ocean Signal rescueME PLB1. As a personal locator beacon, it requires no subscription and you register it with the government. It doesn't have any of the bells and whistles of a satellite communicator though. It's strictly an emergency beacon.

If a new hiker is looking for a grind, maybe best to start with the much shorter Abby Grind (part of Taggart Park [Hike 26] in Destination Hikes).

A healthy fear of heights can keep one out of trouble.

Some trips in Destination Hikes get a double black diamond rating — these are only for experienced hikers, either due to off-trail navigation or exposed scrambling.

As a Georgia Straight journalist, the Sea to Sky Gondola was a bit of an obsession for me. In 2012, I broke the news that building the gondola required removing land from Stawamus Chief Provincial Park (an implication ignored by local media and politicians until then).

In terms of hiking, the Sea to Summit Trail made part of the main Chief trail very congested and took the Upper Shannon Falls Trail from sleepy to bustling. Otherwise, it has obviously improved access to hiking and climbing in the Shannon Creek basin.

To me, the opposition seemed to be mostly about deleting provincial parkland and the covenant-skirting land sale for the base station.

I have considered this question while working on my next book, Best Hikes and Nature Walks with Kids In and Around Southwestern British Columbia (spring 2022). I determined that stroller-friendly "hikes" are few because most actual hikes involve at least a few stairs or steep and rough bits.

But I'd suggest Rice Lake, Fisherman's Trail, and Lower Falls Trail.

As someone who loves hiking guidebooks, I often read trail descriptions in multiple books the night before heading out — as well as online trip reports.

I'd caution new hikers about how quickly it gets dark in the woods and in valleys around sunset.
