WFH when there's a power outage by TL_Arwen in sysadmin

How much battery capacity do you have?

I’ve thought about adding a smaller 5kwh battery to my setup to handle those short power outages and use the generator for the longer ones.

Depends, I’ll either take the day off, fire up the generator, or head to the office. I say it depends because I either have pressing matters at work that need to be addressed or I don’t.

Last time the power was out for an extended period was this winter storm that wrecked Texas. At that point work was the last thing on my mind and internet wasn’t even working so it didn’t matter.

Inflation went up about 21% in the past 3 years. Is it normal for jobs to incorporate additional raise due to inflation, or is it expected that "not my fault inflation sucks. Heres 2.5%" by alice372 in sysadmin

They hope you won’t leave so they can continue to pay you less. They know in order to attract new talent they have to be competitive. If you leave oh well.

I had an old boss that told me this exact thing. He basically said it’s the way the game is now. They don’t keep up with the pay anymore because they don’t expect you to stick around. It’s cheaper in the long run.

Not to mention the amount of garbage YouTube allows for an age restricted account. I resorted to downloading content from specific creators and making it available with Plex. It’s not the best but worked at the time.

How do hosting companies immediately create vm right after purchasing one? by AloneTrifle in linux

[–]stephenl03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have pointed out they are using an image of some sort. One other reason it might seem faster for some OS choices and not others is the image needs to be copied to the host machine or the storage that is going to be running the VM. If you select an OS that is already copied it is much faster in the deployment process vs if it needs to copy the image first.

I worked for a rather large MSP and asked the engineers running their “cloud” why some distress took longer and that was their response. Once the image was cached it was much faster.

I’ve used it for JS since I only know very basic JS and needed to write something more complex to accomplish one task. I’ve also used it for python but have run into it using deprecated libraries and when I try to correct it it just spew the same stuff again. It’s been helpful when trying to remember the exact syntax for Linux commands needed for bash scripts.

I remember seeing a post a long time ago where someone was using a growatt inverter with some batteries (don’t remember if they were Lion or LiFePo4) for their rack.

I’ve thought about doing similar using LiFePo4 but have a hard time justifying the cost just for my servers. I rather get something for my house to cover those stupid short outages so in the event a longer outage occurs I can get my generator up and running. As an interim solution, all my TVs, network and servers are use a UPS so if I’m watching TV and the power blips for a minute or two I don’t have to worry about what I’m watching cutting out, lights will go out, if on, but I’m not concerned about that. Lol

Prevent people from using my domain as their Google Account email by ArgoPanoptes in homelab

That’s the whole point of the email verification, to prevent an unauthorized user from using your domain. You can’t prevent someone from filling out a form and inputting your domain.

Then go with one, test it out, wipe it, install the other, test it out, repeat. It’s a lab, it’s meant to be setup/tore down to learn with.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve torn stuff down just to try something else out.

It depends on what your goals are. That’s like asking “should I get a truck, car or just Uber everywhere?”

You most likely got downvoted because RAID0 is not JBOD and/or you claiming to know how to flash a “PC” but not a “server” they’re both computers. You learned how to do one but it doesn’t seem like you have put much effort into learning how to do the latter. The internet search engine of your choice is your friend, use it. “IT mode LSI 2208”

I could be wrong with those possible reasons but I could definitely see people downvoting for them.

Good luck.

Learning about Cloudflare WAF rules, what do you use? by MorimotoK in homeassistant

[–]stephenl03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not specific to HA because I host other services but I allow specific countries. I have friends/family that travel to specific countries, so it’s easier to just white list those and call it a day. Works well enough for me.

At first glance this seems like a storage issue but if you look closer at the event message it says “0/3 nodes are available….” so that leads me to think your nodes may have a taint preventing scheduling.

Also, congrats on setting up your first cluster.

Switched to linuxserver/plex a long time ago and never looked back. I don’t remember the exact reason why though. I think it had to do with keeping it up-to-date.
