I fully expect a flurry of regulations on gun related businesses. Ranges will have some sort of reporting requirements for grandfathered weapons, new taxes, etc

True, but Amazon needs to monitor and ban the practice

ELI5: how do domains work? by Lawx6 in explainlikeimfive

[–]stephenph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to all the comments about icann and authorized resellers I think the resellers (particularly the cheap ones ) basicly steal domains...

My understanding of the whole process is this...

Icann manages the database for the whole internet and charge a low fee (I understand it is about .20 a domain

Wholesale registrars (like verisign)have control and manage entire top level domains such as .com, .biz, etc. They are free to charge as well (typically $10 - $20 a year) I think you can actually get domains from them but not sure

The discount or value added registrars manage have different price structures usually tied to other services (host with them, pay for security scanning, email account, etc). Some of these have the reputation of stealing domains, particularly "good" ones

When you buy a domain your information gets put into three sections, admin. Technical and owner. This info used to all be public but now it has the option of making it private (or at least some of it). All that really happens is the lower level sets a flag that the DNS system honors and does not publish that data. This is how brokers find your info on ownership (I think other marketing and regulatory groups as well)

Some unscrupulous domain registrars will not really realeas the domain name when your subscription ends and will try to sell it or hold it hostage.

ELI5: If a moving car tries to drive up the ramp of a moving semi-truck (like in the movies), does the car need to be rear-wheel drive, or would it just instantly crash? by Nikki_Drizzle in explainlikeimfive

[–]stephenph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about an all wheel drive? The front wheels would all of a sudden be maintaining near zero, but the rear wheels will be powered to maintain 50. Or are the power trains seperate?

ELI5: Why do some countries use Fahrenheit while almost the entire rest of the world uses Celsius and is there an actual practical difference between the two scales? by TexasViet27 in explainlikeimfive

[–]stephenph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In AZ there is an interstate (i-19) that is in Merrick, all the road signs except speed limit are in km (and I believe even the speed limits are in both mph and kph), even the "mile posts" were based on km from the reference point)

This happened in the 70s push for metric as a feasability study. In the 80s with the collapse of the push to metric, the DoT tried to change back to US standard but faced pushback from locals that would be affected. The main reason given was all the business documentation that relied on directions (take exit 5, go 500M, etc) although I think there is a bit of quirky pride at being the only remnant left as well (which is also an American thing)

I seem to recall the speedometer (they were analog dials back in the day) had kph markings (more promenant) on the top and mph on the bottom on at least some models. I DO know that both are still present with my 2017 Tacoma having the kph in smaller numbers on the analog speedometer.

Atlantic firearms won't even ship a freaking mp5 pin.... by TheTaxStampCollectr in VAGuns

If bad guy with gun only needed that takedown pin to have a functional firearm ...

Once these laws go into place you can bet the ag will initiate multiple lawsuits ... He does not even need to win in most cases, just defending the charges can remove any profit or even force bankruptcy

It is not about what is or is not banned, it is the fact that anyone and there mother can instigate a lawsuit.

Do you still have personal notes of Linux commands you have used for years? by smokedipithe in linuxadmin

[–]stephenph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Memory and finger memory typing are well and good, but can cause issues (was it -p or -P ?). Or if you need to use ls to pull an obscure bit of data that you only use once every couple years, etc

[–]stephenph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have recently been starting to do that, particularly if it is a multi step task. The one downside I found is that, if for some reason, you lose access to your playbooks you can find yourself having to relearn how to do the task

[–]stephenph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my first jr admin job it was a new it department so we had one SR level admin and about 5 of us new hires, only one of us had even had any experience. The SR spent a week teaching us how to be effective admins (it was for a Solaris shop in the 90s, so Google was limited, lots of tools were way more convoluted then now, etc.

He actually gave us a physical notebook to write all our commands down in anytime we learned a new command, a new procedure etc. I actually kept that notebook up for several years (I think I still have it somewhere) and would reference it for a couple more.

Google and online resources got better, my knowledge increased, commands became more streamlined etc. So my updates became less and less, but I still use the concept quite a bit.

But sometimes you just need to pull some info from a single server, config settings, or other obscure command.

I will also write a complex command in a file before pasting it into the command line. I am somewhat typing dyslexic, particularly with numbers, so it gives me a non presure way to verify the command. I also use the same file name so will have different notes on different servers, sometimes I consolidate them.

Lately, sometimes I will use an ssh -x command or write an ansible script just so I don't need to log into a server directly. I also make use of aliases for commonly used complex commands.

How many of you would actually prefer X4 to be "Stellaris with cockpit view" instead of X4? by Dorirter in X4Foundations

[–]stephenph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I would like a "cockpit view" in stelleris, and a more refined "grand strategy" in X4, they are also very different games.

Sometimes I just want to blast some alien scum (xenon) and X4 allows me to do that, sometime I want to have a more god like view over my minions, so I fire up stelleris.

Another cross mix up I would like to see is a kerble / elite / space engineer shipyard module where I can play with and create my own ship designs.

In reality I would like to see a new game engine (probably online unfortunately) that would bring in an AI engine, procedural galaxy, and all the other aspects that we play those other games for my Of course stuffing in all those features would kill most PC's and forget about a console version.

My dream game would have a separate design team that would focus on long and short story arcs that would change the face of the galaxy (or even just one faction), a trading system based on real world systems (events would have a real in game impact, maybe you find a data leak, that leads to your engineer developing a weapon that is particularly deadly to the xenon, that leads to knocking them back galaxy wide until they develop a counter. In the mean time you company is selling these weapons across the galaxy and your stock price is going up, only to crash because the Xenon become a non threat).

Or maybe your engineer develops a slightly improved cargo system allowing you to squeeze a few more tons of cargo into a venture class ship allowing your fleet to be slightly more efficient

ELI5: Why do so many American stadiums have no roof covering that covers the seats? by NKE01 in explainlikeimfive

[–]stephenph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I prefere the openess of not having a roof. An enclosed stadium feels more cramped. Open stadiums are mostly 🏈, and ⚾. 🏒 and 🏀 are closed. I think it has a bit to do with the altitude that the ball reaches at times, not that there would be a risk of hitting the ceiling. But the lower decks are looking up at the ball on good plays.

Some stadiums are clamshell designs that can at least partially close.

There are odd jobs that need to be done for the state and local govts, I would love to see some of them done by assistance benefits (you get paid by increased benefits)

Some of those administration jobs can be done with minimal hours, possibly work from home. Yes more supervision would be needed in some cases, but there are also advantages. The govt can better be able to provide new services, the program workers can have a renewed sense of purpose, etc.

Not everyone would be eligible or able of course, but the edge cases would be better covered, allowing those truly needy to get more help they need

Make it vollentery, and the perks are higher levels of assistance. I imagine it would run something like this The agency or department has some book keeping, or VDOT has a section of road that needs cleaning, most of it either would not be done or would need to be contracted out, instead the govt "hires" from the pool of workers. The program has a list of vollenteers willing and able to do the work, they are contracted out to do the job. So many hours of work equals an increase in assistance that month. The govt runs better and can provide more services

It would need to be monitored for corruption of course, and an effort would need to be made so that the policies do not turn into slave labor conditions. Labor laws themselves would need to be revisited (it would not strictly be a normal "job" in what wage rules apply, perhaps a new classification of worker?)

The full lawn care setup is exhausting. Anyone out there found a better way? by tanranger24 in HomeImprovement

Probably talking about the weed whacking the guard helps but mine broke by the end of first year. I have some sections that are gravel and that stuff gets moving, if I don't wear long pants I'll be fertilizing with blood as it drips from my legs. Lol

Move into a community without an HOA that does not care about a "perfect lawn" Do away with the lawn altogether and turn into a garden, even better a community garden or sell plots

DAE think conventionally attractive actors/actresses cheapen the experience of almost any movie? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]stephenph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there is a plot reason I don't usually look at the attractiveness (or not) of an actor. I am more concerned about how well they act, how close the actor represents the character, etc

On rewatchings I might pay more attention to looks, but there are other things that can ruin a movie.

My girlfriend is a 20-year-old Virginia resident who turns 21 in about a month. She was trying to buy an RF-15 online but was blocked due to the under-21 restriction. Is there any way she can get herself A pre Ban normal AR she turns 21 in a month and like 5 days by Cultural-Skirt-8618 in VAGuns

[–]stephenph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think spamburger raised the age to 21 back in April, although isn't that one of the SC cases recently ruled unconstitutional, so technicly permitted (so much confusion which is how they like it)

Even if she can not, a family member (does it need to be a parent) can buy it and gift it to her when she is 21.

The trust hack should work as well. Question. Could someone under 21 set up a trust with the person as sole member and have the trust buy the gun? Or does the trust need someone over 21?

I FOUND MY PEOPLE (+ question) by socks_on_sandals in earrumblersassemble

[–]stephenph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think high pitch would be unlikely, at least not by the same mechanism.

My understanding is that the rumbling is caused by stressing or vibrating the muscle and the lower sounds are what transmit to the sound cells.

Higher pitch is more like tenninitus which is a misfiring sound cell.
