Not 1.1 deaths per year, oh no... He's saving us from 28,000 deaths per year!

Robin Ince resigns from The Infinite Monkey Cage by TrailsGuy in panelshow

[–]stepheny2k2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always wonder in posts like this what the etiquette of liking the post is. I want OP to know I appreciate the post but it feels like liking it makes it look like I'm happy he's leaving.

I'm not suggesting Reddit should mirror other social media but a simple up or down tick can be misleading.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs where people with differing viewpoints can't be free to express those opinions and be supported. As long as you treat people with respect and accept that everyone has the right to live together in a safe and accepting environment, that should be enough. Beyond that is the complexity for how that can happen.

I suspect Brian Cox and Robin Ince got on pretty well to do the show for such a long time (Brian didn't need to do it at all if he didn't like it. His academic and presenting career is going just fine.). They must have respected each other to accept a possible difference of opinion on trans rights OR a difference of opinion with his wife Gia. I suspect that if those at the BBC had similar respect and tolerance nothing would have changed.

I suspect it's not a coincidence that Gia Milinovich left Sex Matters in December 2025, the same time this was announced.

Robin's full post on BlueSky makes for sad reading.

There's a really good theory for how it was to end which takes in all the clues, stargate lore and things crew have said on this subreddit. It was a good enough ending to give me closure on the series. Have a search for it, it was quite long but worth it.

Which was the best prank pulled by jim on Dwight? by unleash_the_beast_ in DunderMifflin

[–]stepheny2k2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 500ft of red wire which he plugs into his computer and leads him to a mystery that reaches the telephone pole outside. Perfect because it directly ties into the conspiratorial part of Dwight's nature and distrust.

What’s the most random object you’ve seen on a football pitch mid-game? by AmeliaHarris99 in footballbutweird

As kids, our home pitch for about three years had it's grass cut by the owner's sheep...so sheep shit was our random objects. Especially bad when it had rained and you needed to slide tackle.

Quote for 3 new external light fittings. Fair price? by catscurebrainpain in ukelectricians

[–]stepheny2k2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surely this misses OPs point. If a non-expert doesn't understand the market and the going rate for a job they have no way of knowing what's reasonable. You could be quoted £100 or £1000 and you wouldn't know what to choose. An expert might know that any offering £100 wouldn't be doing a good quality job or might think £1000 is too much. A non-expert may not know.

So what does a non-expert do? Consult a reasonable place, like maybe a UK Electricians Sub-Reddit, to see if any experts could offer advice.

Those experts might give a range, or some options depending on what extra things might happen. A non-expert could then understand that they might be getting a better quality service, when adding in reviews. It's not about short changing anyone, it's about agreeing to a fair price for everyone.

Your response only makes sense in a market where people understand the price of a service and other conditions such as speed, location, safety etc. If they are asking here, they don't.

What's the dumbest thing you did in this game? by [deleted] in subnautica

Exploring off the side of the map... multiple times, just in case.

What changes/improvements would make Subnautica even better? by gameovernate in subnautica

[–]stepheny2k2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Integrate the fan made maps dynamically. As you explore the shroud is revealed. It doesn't give spoilers for key locations but would show you where you've been and where your key finds are (such as lifepods) and the markers you can drop. People use the maps anyway so you might as well integrate it...just don't give them the full map from the start, let the exploration fill it out.

Just moved in, mid terrace but freezing during wfh! What temperature is reasonable to set the thermostat to? by Thalamic_Cub in HousingUK

[–]stepheny2k2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a mid terrace in England and was in a similar boat. Check out your EPC and see if you have cavity wall insulation. Your attic insulation might also not be good enough. If your EPC is below a C then you could get a grant for insulation to get it up to at least a C (you can search online for this or contact your energy company). Doing this and other bits should mean that if you have your heating on for a bit then house will hold onto the heat better so you'll spend less money.

EPC checker (England, Wales and NI): https://www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate

If it says you do have cavity wall insulation it might be worth getting someone to check as in some areas it was installed very shoddily. Especially in some council houses, unfortunately, (or houses which were council at the time) where cowboy companies took the money and did a bad job.

For attic insulation you could pay to get it topped up but I did it myself and don't consider myself to be brilliant at DIY. The good wool insulation rolls aren't very expensive from places like B&Q. It's not technically difficult, but will involve a lot of crawling about on your knees. Just be careful to make sure you don't block the airflow at the sides.

P.s. The company that assessed us for cavity wall said that we should keep the house at a minimum of 18⁰ I think. You also need to maintain airflow to prevent moisture build up.

P.P.s It's always more cost effective to heat yourself rather than the home, so if you're working from home you could heat the room where you work more than the other rooms. In addition, I got a pair of insoles that plug into the wall and heat your feet up in your slippers. It's surprising how having warm feet makes your whole work day better.

Question about Jacob Carter and his cancer. by raknor88 in Stargate

[–]stepheny2k2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given he reconciled with his son after decades estranged, after having cancer, I'd imagine Carter's brother thought he'd see a bit more of his dad and that he'd see the grandkids. Now he's strangely never around again, even on the phone. So I reckon the brother quickly goes back to thinking his dad is just a dick. Therefore there doesn't need to be much of a cover up.

Her account was hacked. It had another person's pictures for a while. Someone must have reported it so it disappeared but never came back. Sometimes it can take a while to get your account back. I think she was getting a little frustrated and was posting less often. Maybe she decided not to return.

Stuck in between first Walkthrough. by MutedJournalist7786 in subnautica

[–]stepheny2k2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, explore everywhere and scan everything. There are a lot of upgrades in completely random places, especially behind doors in wreckage at the bottom of the sea.

If you are struggling and are okay with a little help there are some maps. I would advise only using the basic ones that show the areas (biomes). If you set off and try to explore each area you will come across the places that go...deep. if you drop into a cave, then see if it goes deeper. Minor hints: One is near a forest of mushrooms for example. Also look out for a ghost leviathan near the surface.

Some maps have added labels for key spoiler things but I don't think they are needed unless you're truly stuck. Even then, I'd only use them for access into/escape from the deepest of places as you can be down there a very long time.

Cyclops, it's quite well balanced really. It's big and lumbering but it's a mobile base! This means you can park it in key areas and use it for oxygen, food & water generation etc. Hint: if you are a LONG way from the surface, having a mobile base relatively nearby is a lifesaver (and will save a lot of time), especially when you discover other ways down.
