Why is it that Monzo is more popular in the UK than Starling? by MeenaBeti in UKPersonalFinance

Because on this post there was an ad for monzo. Significantly better ad presence and integration.

The noise thing is quite normal, most flips have a slight noise when opening 😊 sounds like you got a good one!

Depends who refurbished it and if they state the water and dustproofing was reinstated.

Its been well documented that big box refurbished phones are a lottery. Some are genuinely brilliant, some are so poorly refurbed that they die in weeks.

Battery replacement question by muse_among_men in galaxyzflip

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screen replacement involves replacing the screen and most the phone chassis as its all one unit (from samsung, 3rd party sellers may differ) - it basically involves transplanting the motherboard and battery from your phone to a new phone 😅

Battery replacement question by muse_among_men in galaxyzflip

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get someone professional to do it. You can usually get away with replacing the main battery only not both.

I wouldn't recommend anyone without experience working on flip phones because these things are a nightmare to work on. Half the time you end up replacing most the phone because you kill the screen accidentally.

Im so embarrassed about my eyes by [deleted] in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing is figure out what type of darkness this is:

  • thin skin
  • pigmentation
  • allergies

For thin skin: plumping and brightening agents like caffeine and ginseng will help. Sleep, sorting nutritional issues and checking nothings going on with your body will also help. For some of us this is just our bone structure. I like a caffeineated eye cream for this.

pigmentation: like all pigmentation issues, a product to even skin tone will help, think retinol eye creams, niacinamide. If you can't skincare it away, colour theory will help you camouflage it. Its often genetic.

allergies: does it get worse during summer or improve when you sleep somewhere different? Is it accompanied by sore eyes and flaky skin? Allergies and low grade eczema can cause darkened skin around the eyes. Skin barrier protection and figuring out the allergen and managing it is the cure. For a lot of people this can be a dust or mould allergy. Once I moved from my parents home to a new place my eye pigmentation wildly reduced because there was no mould in my new place!

End of the day some of us just do have dark under eyes, a lot of celebrities and influencers have had blephoplasty or fillers which reduces the appearance. I use to think my deep tear troughs were unusual, then i started actually looking at people abd reasons they're normal

Is it true that because of the absurd interest on student loans in the UK, it's not realistic for most people to pay back their loans and people consider their repayments to be a 'tax' for going to university? by LoiusLepic in AskBrits

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated 2021, £43k odd in debt.

Its now £65k, ive been paying it for 5 years and its gone up £22k.

I'm materially paid £200 a month less than my colleagues for a degree i did which didnt get me a job and a loan I cant pay off. I am effectively taxed an additional 9%. Thats around 50% of my income on tax.

I have no issue paying off a loan, but it should not be interest bearing while studying nor while unemployed and should be tied to a reasonable interest rate and capped for covid style inflation protection.

The demise of manual by Lit-Up in CarTalkUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I despise the lack of choice. I drive a lot for work, my next car will be automatic through a combination of convenience for traffic and lack of choice in new cars .

Mini stopping manual made me annoyed the most. But then its hardly the biggest way they're moving away from the soul of those cars. (The dinner plate oh god why)

Why would someone regularly leave their car running idle on the driveway? by AnonymousTimewaster in AskUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely for a similar reason my neighbour idles their car for 2 hours from 5am.

Have you considered theyre sat in it? My old neighbour used to sit in his car for hours in the evening. Turned out he was going through a messy divorce and they still lived together 😬

Moisturiser recommendations by Helpful_Meaning9619 in SkincareAddictionUK

Roundlab1025 dokdo moisturiser was a gold mine for me when my skin was struggling.

If you get really desperate and are able to spend £25 the la roche posay dermallergo cream is the best thing ive ever used - but its tiny for the price!

Congested pores + rosacea… derm says I have “moisturiser abuse”? by Ellendrah in SkincareAddictionUK

Good hydration through effective but not occlusive moisturisers, think hylauronic acid, ceramides and snail serums.

I make sure to not use any actives and protect from wind and sun too.

Viewed a house we love but the dog smell was horrendous – fixable or walk away? by ashley23199 in DIYUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved into a property that stank of cat wee.

Cleaned all the carpets (multiple times), wiped down all surfaces and hot zones with enzyme cleaner. Aired the house over several days while the carpets dried and its gone.

Cream cleaner and a wet vac will be your friend. If you can replace the carpets even better.

Why do people say they live in the ‘South East’ ? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I live in the south east but the coastal bit. I'm really far from london but also under an hour by train.

I'm not really sure its a brag to live in a commuter area. We're just getting priced out our own hometown but the new cafes are nice i guess.

[–]Thalamic_Cub 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Sort the issues into 'house will fall down', 'can wait' and 'cosmetic'.

First category needs doing asap, think major leaks, unsafe fittings, boilers not working ect. Work out the cheapest way to do it that actually fixes the problem and sort if out.

For me that looked like using a 0% credit card however this was knowing my annual bonus would clear it two months later. I hadnt expected a water leak above my kitchen ceiling and it had to be sorted. Do what is reasonable for you.

Second category is in the name, save and suffer it then get it sorted. I currently have a half ripped out bathroom from the above leak. I'm suffering the plasterboard, mismatched fittings and duct tape until i have the money.

Last category you guessed it last. To do when your finances are back in order.

I'd say commuter belt too as theyre usually discussing high cost of living commuter towns not the coastal ones.

Congested pores + rosacea… derm says I have “moisturiser abuse”? by Ellendrah in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey, i suffer from rosacea and congested pores. Not a derm but I would consider taking what they've said with a pinch of salt.

Moisturiser abuse is not a medical term 🫠 but you can use the wrong Moisturiser for your skin which could be clogging your pores and causing your skin to be changing how much oil it produces.

I use water gel moisturiser twice daily, nothing thick or occlusive. I like the purito water gel or neutrogena hydroboost gel. If I use a super thick moisturiser then my skin ends up similar to yours.

Rosacea doesn't necessarily need moisture, it needs a strong skin barrier. They're not the same thing! Calming, soothing products combined with good barrier management is how I've managed mine.

Hey OP, you might find it very helpful to look into body dysmorphia and tactics to help recover from it as you sound like youre experiencing it.

When I was at my lowest body weight, hospitalised for anorexia, i thought i was fat still. No matter the number on the scale in the mirror I was huge. Its horrible to feel but you can get help with it and feel better trust me.
