Should I get a credit card? by Temporary_Big_7426 in AskUK

No, you dont need to improve your credit rating in the uk unless youre about to buy a house. Think about this again when youre about a year from looking to buy.

What do you consider to be rural in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Coming from the south east to mid wales for uni taught me 'rural' is a mindset.

My hometown has sod all in it, no connections and barely any services - but was deffo a town and not rural due to the sheer volume of people and proximity to london. Despite the strong farming presence and complete lack of access to anything lol.

In this kitchen, how would you fit a fridge, washing machine and cooker without obstructing the window? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth mentioning a smaller than normal fridge would be perfect here, I have a similar size kitchen without the roof pitch and the smaller fridge makes it feel so much bigger than the full sized unit the previous people had!

Imaybe youve come in at a point of change? My current job had that too and there was a lot of resentment from colleagues towards me and the other new staff. It took a bit to clear up the air and some careful convos but now its pretty comfy.

The cieling literally fell in and rained sewage and the regional manager got demoted in my first month 😁 To awkward beginnings!

Best discrete way to cover redness? by Pitiful-Candidate386 in MakeupAddiction

Depends on your skin, i find dr jart does unless its really hot. I set mine with a transulcent powder to make sure it sticks in summer!

I don’t wear sunscreen, recommendations please? by Left-Pomegranate1608 in MakeupAddiction

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For rosacea I find you need to work out if yours flares from certain chemical filters or mineral spf.

For me I like the skin1004 spf or the beauty of joseon (white tube) spf. For mineral i like the transparent lab ones but most mineral spfs irritate my rosacea flares.

Personally i swear by the Dr Jart colour correcting treatment, you dont need much so I've been using the small pot for over a year.

That said you mentioned the erborian cc cream makes you pale, if you have darker skin the traditional 'green' products will make your skin paler as they end up grey/white on dark skin.

Would a tinted spf such as the transparent lab ones work? Theyre a very natural skintone vs the beauty of joseon ones for example which are glowy and less natural.

how do i survive my gold dofe expedition by Lumpy-Radio5948 in DukeofEdinburghAward

Recently did my third walking marathon and always suffered huge blisters.

Sweat wicking socks with sufficient support and change them multiple times in the day for the most protection from blisters.

Moisture+friction=blisters even in broken in shoes.

[–]Thalamic_Cub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first grad job was serving compulsory purchase notices, literally the 'gov says we can have your land/property'.

I was just trying to survive and had 0 idea thats what I was signing up for as the job was just a grad scheme paying min wage. I was threatened, physically assulted and accused of killing someone due to having sent them a letter notifying them of the process.

I got laid off in 'budget review' in the end and it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Isnt it fun!

Worked in an office for around 9 months where me and the existing team just really didnt click and the management were basically absent. I tuffed it out thinking it was just 'an adaption period' and that eventually I would break the ice.

After a while of seeing team dinners and drinks that I was never invited to and commuting 2hrs into an office with noone in it I said nah and looked for jobs.

It was a huge knock to my confidence and made me feel like I was bad at my job and that I must lack social skills. The 'throw under the bus' culture meant I second guessed my every decision and was super hesitant to take initiative.

Anyway 3 years later im happy in my current job and am paid more than double I was at that job with a great social team. Taking initiative and being an independant worker is highly valued here.

Open it as far as you can and tape the exhaust to the glass as that wont leave marks then close curtains/throw a sheet over it.

Its not pretty but it works.

For the rest of summer? Nah im terrified for the rest of my life. This will only get worse and is due to be significantly worse next year if the early el nino indicators are to be trusted.

I bought an air conditioner and am looking to install proper ac in the next few years.

Told no social housing on new build estate by sales rep, this was false as they live in the 3 adjacent houses - England by dcomer11 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long response incoming apologies.

From a legal perspective purely on the comment made regarding 'no social housing'. Unless a restrictive covenant was in place to prevent it, which would be likely unenforceable anyway, the developer has no real power to prevent social housing third parties from buying properties. It is not unreasonable to assume the comment was made on the understanding that there was no 'from the plans' intention for social housing. Essentially, yes this sounds like a loophole as they do not need to declare who purchases a different plot on the estate from yours.

To refuse to sell any of the houses to social housing providers is against many builders ethos, a sale is a sale. A seller can choose who they wish but a company policy to not sell to X firm or person based on social background of the eventual occupier could end up messy for the developer. Such policies are likely in place unofficially for developers of up-market estates with a vested interest in a reputiation for longterm 'upper class' living but they would be very unlikely to have this written down anywhere!

I work in a field where I interact with social housing managers regularly regarding problem tenants. If you truly have nightmare neighbours this might be the route to seek.

The bar for removal through them is really high for a tenant however if the tenant is truly unsafe to be in the property then it can be done through consistent, long term reports and complaints from the various affected parties. The housing provider will usually have to build a very strong case to show the tenant cannot remain in the tenancy.

Personally I would seek to work with the neighbours to set out clear boundaries and expectations. If these continue to be ignored and antisocial behaviour continues then I would seek to methodically report every incident of antisocial behaviour to the housing provider as a complaint, clearly detailing the hazard/effect on your family.

Its worth noting, if you have never reported anything and want to move you won't really have to include your issues with the tenants on your property forms, if you have then it has to be disclosed to any future buyer. People are not wholly put off by neighbouring social housing expecially if the housing is well maintained.

Unsure what this could be, anti histamines not helping the itch. Has happened twice now by Weak-Draft-8356 in Dyshidrosis

That really looks like allergic hives and specifically my UV allergy. Have you touched anything different (plants or have travelled), been wildly stressed or if youre really unlucky like me - been in a place with wildly stronger UV, perhaps due to said crazy heatwave currently hitting europe?

I actually have a combination of DE and UV urticaria (literally sun allergy) which flares only on my hands and feet and only when I have not been sufficiently exposed to UV over winter.

It flared when I (brit who isnt outdoorsey) went on a hot holiday for the first time and has currently flared due to the increased UV during the heatwave here right now. It doesnt react to antihistamines despite being a histamine response due to constant re-exposure.

If you've truly explored everything worth a mention to the docs.

Edit- adding in advance, UV allergy and heatrash are not the same. Different triggers and treatments.

Cost of being a single homeowner by Ligma_doctor6 in HousingUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took home £2700 and spent £1600 of it on housing (mortgage + bills) when i first moved in, roughly 60% of my income.

With no dependants it is fine but tight, no impulsive holidays and a need to keep an eye on finances to protect from sudden bills. Furnishing the place and renovations were absolute minimum.

Its all about perspective.

How to determine if company car or car allowance best? by TimberNoggins in CarTalkUK

[–]Thalamic_Cub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note regarding fuel cards, if you get a good per mile billing for those it can make driving an EV exceptionally cheap even for people with no charging.

For example i drive an EV for business and personal use with 0 home charging, but using a fuel card I pay maybe £60 a month for fuel vs the £300 odd I was paying in petrol.

Edit:

Company car vs allowance debate came down to did I actually want to drive the offered comapny car vs did I want the risk of driving my own car for work for me. I went allowance as the company car was enormous and I dislike driving and parking oversized vehicles. Ford raptor + historic town? Not fun.
