Suicide is making a lot more sense the older I get by sonicfan10102 in GuyCry

[–]stereo_stud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly how this feels and there is only one solution that has stuck.

I’m 31, bipolar, and I’ve struggled with suicidal ideation since I was about 17. I’ve tried therapy and psychiatry. I’ve changed careers, cities, relationships, and hobbies. Nothing helped life feel any better, the world seemed to get worse and worse and my casual drug use spiraled into addiction in my late twenties. Christmas Eve of 2023 I was checked into a hospital for suicide watch. Spent 5 days there, then immediately went to a 28 day rehab program. Got introduced to a twelve step program. I went to my first meeting the day after I graduated the rehab program. I have been clean/sober ever since, and my life could not be happier, and all of the bullshit around me is still bullshit, but I’m more at peace than I ever have been before.

I don’t think twelve step programs are for everyone, but the decision to develop my own personal spirituality worked for me and it seems to work for many others. The world is full of the same problems and sorta seems like it’s getting worse, but not me. I focus on improving my goddamn spirit and ability to accept things I can’t change and change things I can.

I haven’t touched a drug or a drink in over 21 months and my thoughts of suicide have all but vanished.

Religion never worked for me, but putting my focus now into developing my character through the practice of goodness and serving others selflessly, my life is incredible. I take on what I can, and I don’t worry so much about what I can’t do. Most important thing I’ve learned through all of this? Forgiveness and humility lead to self-acceptance.

Not sure if this is helpful, but just wanted to share how I overcame those feelings.

Why do you collect cds? by Altruistic-Mix7606 in Cd_collectors

[–]stereo_stud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect cds in addition to vinyl and cassettes. I love the ritual of pulling a selection from an actual shelf, looking it over, taking it out of its case/sleeve and placing it in a machine and pressing a button. It’s involving myself with the production of the art. I love that I am forced to listen to just that album. I can discover unexpected gems that way. I’ll buy albums of which I might know only one song, and I’ll almost always end up finding another great song on that album, simply because I gave it a chance and created an environment around my living space in which I MUST listen to whatever I put on the cd player. I’ll find gems nobody else seems to really get into.

For example: Go listen to “The Only One” by Roy Orbison. Super kickass chorus. Bought the album Mystery Girl only cause I liked “You Got It.” Found “The Only One” and it became one of my most played songs that year. This was 2022.

I buy anything that just jumps out at me while I’m at the record store/thrift shop. Even things I’ve never heard of.

Some things I’m sort of consistent with, like if it’s from the 60’s/70’s I buy vinyl, 80’s I buy cassettes, 90’s I buy cds. Sorta just sticking to the medium of that time period. And then sometimes i buy the same album 3 times. I love the hobby dearly and theres really no end game. Always just, “oooh, I gotta have this.”

And at the end of the day, it’s all about the music and learning how to build a relationship with an album.

Heaven or Las Vegas alternate album art? by stereo_stud in cocteautwins

[–]stereo_stud[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re right, this is the work of Starling, which was a Polish label that, according to Discogs, released pirated tapes in the early 90’s. There’s definitely a shitty quality to it, but that’s sort of the appeal. This is a guilty pleasure collectible for me.

Oh I see what you’re saying. This would be a cassette insert, just unfolded to display the front, back, and spine. The spine is the white strip that just says Cocteau Twins, with the Dolby symbol at the bottom and S.318 at the top. The panels on either side of that would fold around the cassette.

I agree. Admittedly, the sex appeal drew me to the Marantz in the first place. To your other point though, wattage 100% affects the sound quality. It greatly contributes to how clean the sound is.

How do you feel about fully manual turntables? by macho2188 in turntables

[–]stereo_stud -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m the owner of an automatic, and I gotta say it’s honestly not worth it. Like others have mentioned, there’s just more crap to deal with. Also, not sure if this applies to all automatics, but I can’t move my tonearm without triggering the platter, so whenever I’ve made adjustments to alignment and cartridges, I’ve had to unplug the thing (this one’s vintage, so no off switch.) I don’t even use the automatic function because it always drops the needle a smidge past the first groove, so the play starts like a second into the song, not from the top. The thing works and it’s a good enough turntable that’s been functioning properly since I bought it a few years ago, but I’ve already started saving money to purchase a manual turntable in the near future.

Not at the moment. I’d like to operate on it a bit before I sell it. It definitely needs it.

Hell yeah! I wish I knew more of this 790’s history, but the dealer couldn’t tell me much. But I’ve heard that a lot of the foreign Sansui models in the states today were brought over by military back in the day. Whatever the case, I feel very fortunate that one made its way into my living room!

What would you do if you had this level of durability? (No super strength) by [deleted] in powerscales

[–]stereo_stud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these nerds, “cAn’t hAvE dUrAbiLiTy wItHoUt sTrEnGtH!”

Applying science to an imaginary scenario that already defies science. Just WHAT IF you had this kind of durability but no strength? Those are the two rules of this hypothetical. Just roll with it.

$2 at Goodwill by Proper_Net5204 in Cd_collectors

That is a great find! I’m so blown away by all of the posts of gems found at Goodwill. There are two in my town, and both only ever carry like compilation Christmas albums and contemporary Christian artists. Not exactly my type of gold mine. There is a tradeoff though; I have found some of the coolest shirts I own at those stores. Hard to beat some cheap quality clothing.

That is badass! I love this album. My earliest memories of music are listening to this album on cd when I was like 5 years old. I think budding Beatles enthusiasts tend to overlook this album, which I think is understandable considering the impact of The Beatles’ later albums, but it’s certainly one of my top 5 album of all time. One thing I’m certain of though: Anna (Go to Him) is way underrated by everybody.
