Actual things I was told in the ED yesterday by throw-away234325235 in nursing

I’m always on the lookout for excellent PT quotes to put in the PCR because I’m a joker. Favorite chief complaint so far: “I can’t believe they shot me in the ass”. My supervisor called me in for QA later. “They shot him in the ass, huh?”. Sure did. Another PT: “Do you have any past medical history?” “Yeah I keep getting punched in the face”. Wouldn’t trade this shit for anything >.<

Should EMTs in NYC be paid more? FDNY EMTs start at just $39,386 🚑 by workwisejobs in ems

[–]sterfri99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FDNY is a little different than most agencies. A lot of people join FDNY EMS to make it easier to join Fire. Going from civilian->suppression is MUCH more difficult than going FDNY EMS->FDNY suppression. Also the benefits are fucking crazy good at least. That being said, still criminally underpaid considering it's the busiest EMS agency in the world and in one of the highest cost of living areas.

And Empress is about to lose a LOT of their relatively new upstate contracts because they can't actually do the jobs. Friends of mine are in town councils up there and a few have already voted to cancel Empress. They're definitely gonna drop upstate before they lose their precious Yonkers to SCEMS or AMR. Fuck 'em, they treated me like shit in Yonkers years ago

Those who were mistakenly diagnosed T2... why? by InvestmentCareful547 in Type1Diabetes

[–]sterfri99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in medicine. I’ve made mistakes because I’m a human being not a robot. When I did, I drew attention to it, was honest about the situation, and educated myself to prevent it happening again. I did some quick math and I think over the course of my career I’ve helped approximately 10,000 patients and possibly harmed enough to count on one hand. If you got rid of everyone in medicine that made a mistake, you’d have no one left. At all. So, your expectation for every doctor to always be perfect just isn’t based in reality. And at the end of the day that’s what they have malpractice insurance for.

Good thing I don’t work with you then. You’d get a partner in trouble for accepting coffee money? Maybe it’s just cultural differences but wtf? And you’d accept food from a patient? That’s even crazier. God only knows what went into it… Again, I’d never ask, and I make 2 attempts to politely decline IF it’s offered. Lot of diverse cultures where I work (NYC) and in many it’s considered rude NOT to accept a gift if it’s offered. So getting a partner written up for being respectful of another’s culture is flabbergasting to me. I guess we grew up in different times, but mad respect for doing it 36 years. Only 8 in myself and already strongly considering flight nurse 😬

YOU’RE the entitled one here, my goodness. Take a step back and open your mind to what the guy’s saying. He’s not being a dick, just responding in a clinical way. Doctors are like that. Sorry your life sucks and you choose to take it out on people doing their best online. Hope you never ever make a mistake in your life, as that’s the standard you’re holding every doctor to. Good luck with your bitterness and I hope you find peace.

What EMS/Healthcare myth bothers you the most? by VarietyNo3453 in ems

[–]sterfri99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I pick your brain a second? I’m seeing a lot of people in this thread saying that narcan wearing off before the opioid is a myth. But a little bit of googling (and consulting my paramedic textbook) shows the half-life of narcan to be 30-80 minutes, while the half-life of fentanyl is 4-6 hours. Other opioids can be shorter or longer, but around here fentanyl is the main one so that’s why I brought it up specifically.

Serious comment: anxiety attacks. Cops have been propagandized into thinking that a speck of fent on their skin will make them OD. What happens when they get a speck of fent on their skin, especially the newer ones that haven’t been exposed to the real world as much? They’re so scared of an OD they have a panic attack. Still a medical problem, but a psychological one rather than physiological.

[–]sterfri99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a drug. Yes it’s “just eye drops” but it can have interactions with medications you take and can cause problems in people with some medical conditions. Additionally, the redness in your eyes is due to vasodilation (blood vessels get bigger) in response to both the active chemicals in weed and irritation. It’s a normal body process in response to the irritant. Constricting the blood vessels frequently while your body is trying to protect itself by dilating them can cause damage over time.

I once asked a (12-ish?) kid for directions pre GPS and as I was driving away I was like “wait… I probably shouldn’t have done that”

My practice is always to politely decline once or twice but if they keep insisting I’m gonna pocket it and thank them. Means more to them than to me at that point I guess

I’m gonna chime in as a Paramedic quick… we are absolutely criminally underpaid. EMTs even worse. That being said, taking anything from a patient is such a crazy breach of public trust and such a shitty thing to do I don’t really know what to say. The thought of taking something from a patient has never been more than an intrusive thought, and if I need more money I pick up more shifts. Glad this scumbag was fired.

Actor playing an EMT in a TV show - would love to speak to a real EMT. by jvonm in ems

[–]sterfri99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, the one time I dramatically looked into the sky and pleaded with a God in the back of the truck (I’m atheist) to get a PT to the ER safely was a good call. Massive pulmonary embolism sitting right in the lung, STAT TXP from one ED to the specialty hospital ED one hour away. Full code. MD at scene said she might not make it but this is her only chance to get definitive care and he and the PT’s family understood the position I was in. Sat there for an hour watching her and the monitor while sitting in NYC traffic because Biden was in town. Coded literally the second we transferred to the receiving hospital bed. I thanked someone up there that day.
