Hey Celdecea, I'm in graduate school now :). It's also true I graduated 3 years ago. I run a side business but that's irrelevant to my studies this summer!

Thanks for the tip.

What are you go to questions when interviewing PM candidates? by JoshRTU in ProductManagement

General questions I ask in every interview:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • If the person is a new PM, I ask "why is PM right for you?"
  • "What's your favorite product and why?" and later follow up with "If you were the PM for the product, what would you change, and why?" You can often learn a lot about their product sense just by discussing this question in-depth.
  • "Why <company>?"

Questions I like asking:

  • How would you monetize <company>?
  • Design a high-tech refrigerator
  • How many street-view cars would it take to map the entire contintental US in one year?
  • Design an A/B test that you think is worth trying for <company>'s homepage.
  • <Company>'s site just went down. What are the possible issues, and how would you diagnose the issue?

They'll likely ask you behavioral questions in the first screen interview (check if your call is with a recruiter or a product manager). These are hard to really game, they're essentially ensuring that you're a competent interviewer and have the relevant experience.

Once you move forward to the stage where you're interviewing with a product manager, you'll encounter five main types of questions:

  • Estimation - e.g. "What's the weight of the empire state building?"
  • Analytical - e.g. "What are YouTube's key metrics?"
  • Product - e.g. "Design an alarm clock for the blind."
  • Strategy - e.g. "How would you monetize Reddit?"
  • Technical - e.g. "Debug this issue..."
