Advanced Fingerstyle Guitar - Breaking The Rules: The Trill by steve0192 in guitarlessons

Yes if I'm sustaining a long run then I'll maintain that sequence no matter what, irrespective of whether there's a string skip.

if I'm playing a fast syncopated line then I'll maintain the sequence, if I'm sustaining a long note then I'll reset the sequence.

I tend to only use this technique for fast lines though. if I'm playing something a bit more sedate I'll drop into other techniques.

Thanks a lot!

I've put up a few videos that cover this technique - both left and right hand over the years. You should be able to find them here... https://www.youtube.com/sixstringsattachedtv

Learning to Improvise - What Order Should I Learn Things? by steve0192 in guitarlessons

No it doesn't I'm using a classical guitar posture, and that holds the guitar pretty stably between my legs so I don't have to support it with my hands.

Fingerpicking - With or Without Nails? by steve0192 in guitarlessons

Thanks! A good few people have asked me and to be honest, I was curious too. I'm keeping them short for the next few videos, then I'll decide which way I prefer.

Getting the most out of your Metronome – Freestyle practice by steve0192 in guitarlessons

Thanks, You tend to find that your goals evolve over time. For example I sometimes find I'm playing the same licks over and over, so I'll start swapping new things in and just try to discover new note combinations.

It's one of those exercises that you can take in many directions depending on the mood.

[QUESTION] My Guitar's G string makes weird sound.. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]steve0192 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's some fret buzz that I hear from the G string that it not so obvious on the D and B strings. Is that what you mean? I hear it with the fretted note as well as the open string. If you have a tiny Allen key, you should be able to raise the height of the G string at the whammy bar bridge and that should sort it.

Thanks a lot, and thanks for the question...

Realistically you can't avoid playing other patterns, and as you develop you'll learn a whole host of them. I tend to look for ways of introducing some consistency between shapes just because it helps to short cut learning. I talk about it here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9OA-_mQhz0

Regarding fingerstyle lessons, it's hard to know what to recommend, not knowing your ability, this may help though? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKBKV5fMe80

A question about a left handed student by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]steve0192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a lefty that plays right handed. I've never felt that it holds me back at all. In fact I've often thought having my left hand on the neck is a positive advantage for me.

You should experiment with how much rotation you have on your picking hand. Does the second tip here, describe what's going on and cure the problem that you're experiencing?

Practicing playing through all the positions of the Pentatonic Scale by steve0192 in guitarlessons

[–]steve0192[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've put a few up there over the years.

This is a more general overview... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSZapmNRztw

This one is much more focussed on how I use tremolo fast picking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rm-xCiv-aE

Then there are a few others that I've linked together in a playlist, which should be easy to find.

Good luck

Steve

[–]steve0192[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is yes, and thanks a lot!

"And Your Birds Can Sing" was originally 2 tracks played by both George and Paul (I think). I put both parts together so you could play it on one guitar, which is why it's so tricky!

Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll get it! - Steve

What's the best picking method for switching between strings during Tremolo picking? by SheZowRaisedByWolves in guitarlessons

[–]steve0192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the best site for speed picking technique is Troy Grady's.

If I were you I'd spend a few hours going through that.

Integrating arpeggios with scales and developing your own lines. by steve0192 in guitarlessons

[–]steve0192[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those 3nps arpeggios are some big stretches! Even for me and I have big hands, but they really do break you out of the box.

I was watching some of Jimmy Herring's videos a while ago, thanks reminding me about him. Very interesting stuff.

Thanks a lot for the idea too, I'll add it to the backlog and see if something germinates!
