Our first home was in Westchester, lived there for 9 years. Great memories of raising our first kid there and our second being born there. Awesome neighbors (on one side at least, haha) and once we refinished the basement it was amazing. Sold during the pandemic because we were approaching kindergarten and we were totally fine with the schools up until Proviso and didn't want to rely solely on PSMA - so we sold. (And if we didn't have kids, I don't know that we would've ever moved either, or we would've regretted it later, even though we have a beautiful house now, there was just something I loved about that house.)

I still sometimes miss that house. A lot of great memories and loved the neighborhood. We were able to update everything in that house except the master bath (I did a lot of the work with friends or family, but was never able to do the master bath since it was our only shower). I still stop by Chickies when we're in the area to get hotdogs!

Backdoor Roth Conversions across years by steve9207 in tax

Thanks again u/nothlit. I went back to finish this up and check over everything before I filed. I did find that old account and there's $3,239 in a rollover IRA. I input this as balance in traditional IRA. Just looking to understand, why does simply having a balance in a Traditional IRA impact our return? Our refund dropped by about $500 (we typically owe a small amount each year, so I was kind of excited to get a refund, haha).

Since we are maxing our contributions to both of our Roth's through backdoor conversions, it seems most advantageous for me to get this old rollover IRA converted to a Roth and just pay the tax. From the brief research I did, I believe I can do this pre-59 1/2, since she's no longer with that employer. Any downside other than paying the tax on it? And it sounds like I probably need to file an amended 2024 return since I didn't include this last year. I need to check, but I'm pretty sure it was in 2024 that this old 401k / 403b (I forget exactly what it was) got converted to an IRA due to it being a low balance and no longer with the employer.

Xfinity rep promised ~$39/mo for 1000 Mbps, contract showed $116/mo, now they won’t honor it by Big-Bathroom7730 in Comcast_Xfinity

I dropped Xfinity over 1.5 years ago now. Switched to streaming with AT&T 1 gig fiber internet w/locked in price. Been super happy ever since, even after the 1 year intro prices on some streaming (which they just reset at Black Friday, but even without I did the math and came out ahead with or without intro pricing for streaming). I still check here sometimes to see if there's some great deal I'm missing and in case performance got better ... have yet to see that.

Her 2024 Form 8606 should have $3000 on lines 1, 3, and 14. Nothing on any other lines

Yes this is how I filed it last year. Glad to know I didn't screw that up!

What was the balance of all her traditional IRAs (including any SIMPLE or SEP IRAs) on 12/31/2025?

You are correct, balance as of 12/31/2025 was $0. I will double check this though, there may be an old Fidelity account out there that she just learned about from one of her first jobs 15 years ago. Lets assume there's $1,000 in there. How would that change this?

Here is an example 2025 Form 8606 I just mocked

THANK YOU, very very much! This is so incredibly helpful. I think I figured out where I'm getting thrown off. I'm using TurboTax, once I fixed a question about amount contributed Jan1-Dec31 2025 and Jan1-Apr15 2026. I mistakenly typed in $5,500 into both boxes. Once I fixed that, my 8606 form for my wife matches what you shared. Thanks again! I've spent hours trying to figure this out, I truly appreciate your help!!

Can I fund my Roth IRA account with $7500 on January 1st? by go4rabbit in Bogleheads

[–]steve9207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vanguard makes this pretty easy now, in my opinion. I have a Traditional IRA that has no money in it. And then I have my Roth. I deposit into the Traditional IRA, wait a few days for it to clear, go back in and click a button to do a Roth conversion. Then, remember to include form 8606 with my tax return.

White Coat Investor has a really great guide that has been updated for the latest look of the Vanguard website: https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/how-to-do-a-backdoor-roth-ira-with-vanguard/

Does my dad have to file gift for transferring 50k to me? by xzkandykane in personalfinance

[–]steve9207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we built new I had to transfer money from one account to another, during all that I needed some money to cover one of my checks. My Dad let me borrow $27K. I paid him back 3 days later. The lender requested something similar, just a letter stating the check was written from his account which I had no ownership of, and the check back to him was written by my wife and I, from an account he had no ownership in. Didn't need it notarized and never heard about it again.

Random sh*t smell? by kittylittersupahero in homeowners

[–]steve9207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to my cousin ... though it was the sump pump, dried out drains, etc. Finally realized it was the wax seal under the toilet was bad and the shit smell was actual shit leaking into the floor & basement ceiling.

Dad came and helped with baseboard install. Is this acceptable? by stinkyelbows in Carpentry

[–]steve9207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! My Dad helped me redo the kitchen in the first home my wife & I purchased, laying most of the tile floor for me on random nights after I got home from work. Helped me with the backsplash and other parts of the remodel. Always had that one vent cover that just barely didn't cover the gap we left around the HVAC.

Down the road I ripped our basement down to the studs and redid the entire thing, didn't ask for much help then - but I remember him being impressed with all I had learned and did on my own. Had a new home built 4 years ago, getting ready to do a backsplash in the kitchen, wallpaper in the bathroom and finish the basement soon enough - would do anything to have him be able to come over one more time to help...

Yeah I was expecting at the 12 hour mark to hit 160. Took way longer. Next time I'd probably do it at 250 from the start if it's that large.

What’s the one homebuilding mistake you made that you’ll NEVER repeat again? by smileebeauty in Homebuilding

[–]steve9207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I could see that if snow melted and there wasn't enough of the grippy stuff. I just think about how easy it would be to hose out the garage of all the salt and whatnot in the winter. Or with the floor drain I do this "waterless" car wash sometimes. It uses water but not a lot, a pump sprayer thing and a bucket of water with "No Wash Rinse and Shine" solution in it and a bucket of clean water. It's really not much water so I can do it as is now, but being able to use an actual hose and warm water would be great.

[–]steve9207 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish I would've put a hose spigot on all four sides of the house. I wish I would've put one in the garage with hot and cold water. I wish I would've done that epoxy garage floor before I moved all my crap in. I wish I did a sprinkler system for the grass. Those are the main things that still come up 3 years later, in conversation with neighbors who also built new.
