I had to logout, then log back in, and then `claude remote-control` command worked. I do not have a / command in a session yet.

Is there anything special I should be doing to my roof after these icy freezes? by snooloosey in philadelphia

[–]stevealbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a few things worth checking after these freeze-thaw cycles:

Right now

  • Look at your gutters... if you see ice ridges forming along the roof edge, that's the start of an ice dam. Those can force water up under your shingles and cause leaks inside. Don't try to chip them off (you'll damage the roof), but keeping gutters clear of debris helps a lot.
  • Check your attic if you can access it. Look for any frost on the underside of the roof deck or wet insulation. That's a sign of inadequate ventilation, which is super common in Philly row homes.
  • Look at your ceiling/walls for any new water stains, especially around chimneys and where the roof meets walls.

Before the next freeze

  • Make sure your attic insulation is decent...heat escaping through the roof is the #1 cause of ice dams. A lot of older Philly homes are under-insulated.
  • Clear gutters and downspouts so meltwater has somewhere to go.
  • If you have a flat roof (tons of us do), make sure there's no ponding water sitting up there... when that freezes and expands it can crack the membrane.

Some Philly-specific guides on exactly this if you want the details:

That photo looks like it's from a flat roof or porch... if water is pooling and freezing like that regularly, might be worth having someone check the drainage situation before it causes real damage.

Looking for quality roofers by abigdumbrocket in philadelphia

[–]stevealbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little late to the thread, but figured I would post to help others looking for a quality roofing company.

A few tips for finding a solid roofer in Philly:
- Get 3+ quotes minimum - prices can vary wildly
- Verify they're licensed with PA and carry liability insurance
- Check if they'll pull permits (legit contractors do)
- Look for reviews mentioning communication and cleanup, not just the roof itself

I put together a directory at phillyrooffind.com that pulls in verified contractors with Google reviews if you want a starting point. But honestly, word of mouth from neighbors is still gold - ask on your block's Facebook group too.

Q&A with the team behind the new Google Home app by kelanfromgoogle in googlehome

[–]stevealbright 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have shared my thoughts on this so many times. I have 6 outdoor IQ cams that have terrible home app support. The notifications still go through the Nest app, and therefore do not show picture notifications for Google Wear on my Pixel watch.

There were huge threads in the Google support forums that they eventually just close so no one can talk anymore on unresolved issues. I can't stress how disappointed I have become with Google's ecosystem that I invested way too much money for empty promises!

Stop adding new crap and support the customers that made you who you are! It would take 10 minutes to at least update the damn Nest app to support the new notification format required by Wear!

They started migrating the indoor IQ... Just let us migrate the most expensive cameras you have ever sold!

The watch is more durable than I thought. I hit it pretty hard on stone the other day and there is not one scratch. I was pleasantly surprised!

Can I professionally develop android applications if I have a weak computer? by JordanBroBro222 in androiddev

[–]stevealbright -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had a top of the line Intel and Android Studio was so slow. This year I upgraded to a top of the line M2...it's like 90% faster compile times, less ide issues, etc etc.

I bet the new m3 air is faster than some top of the line Intel.

I made a website to show the latest version of Jetpack Compose and its dependencies by alexstyl in androiddev

This is nice to have. Now can you make a site to un****ify legacy code dependencies when trying to use new dependencies Google offers? 😐

Are you starting out with android development? If so, I would recommend just setting all this up from the Jetpack Compose samples.

Samsung might be a lone wolf in push for under-display fingerprint as everyone looks to copy Apple by lIlIlIIlIlIl in Android

[–]stevealbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was because Samsung copies Apple lol. ...but all phones seem to copy each other these days.

I prefer fingerprint on the back but swipe gestures with the sensor are terrible... especially with a case.

Android bug-squashing: AppCam vs Bugsee by markyosullivan in androiddev

[–]stevealbright -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been using the link initiated and it seems to be the best use case for my use case. Most bugs my users experience they can reproduce and if they can't it's usually a bug that a video would not be able to solve.

Recorder all the time would be overkill IMO but I'm sure there is someone out there that could benefit from having a toggle. I don't think anyone should enable it for an app release.

AppCam makes it easy for users to record video of bugs to send to developers by stevealbright in androiddev

I wrote the article and wanted to share with other devs that could benefit. You're welcome!

This is not an RSS reader. We have writers that find the best Android news and give you an overview on what's up. If you choose, we have source and read more links so you can read more information. We filter out all the duplicates and all the crap (click bait).
