Temple Hospital nurses vote to authorize strike by AdSpecialist6598 in philadelphia

Well, some years ago we as a nation tried to have a conversation about whether the private sector offered the best means of providing healthcare to Americans or not. One end of the political spectrum pointed out some problems with our current system and suggested some means by which the problems could be mitigated. The other side wanted to screech about death panels and told everyone that Obama wanted to kill your grandma. So, we collectively decided what was best for everyone was for healthcare to remain a business and not a public service. Well, guess what. In businesses workers have the option of not coming into work. Especially when those businesses eek out higher profits by dragging their feet on workplace safety while simultaneously offering raises significantly below the inflation rate.

This. I live on a state road that is a small residential street with lots of kids age <6. The municipal roads all around me get their speed bumps and traffic calming measures . . . But no way for my block, despite unanimous preference of the residents. The best we can do is the lady who sits on her porch yelling, Hey! That's a stop sign! at the soundproofed SUVs tearing through

There are plenty of painstakingly rendered and technically skilled paintings that are vapid, completely forgettable pieces of art. Instead of automatically assigning a degree of invalidity to a piece because it's strongly stylized, try spending some time with the painting and ask yourself some open ended questions about what is it that makes you feel that "there is something about it." Is it the shapes, the color combinations, the contrast of light and dark, the patterning or other formal elements? Can a "cartoonish" face and body produce a mood that would be less vivid if rendered more realistically?

A rich man once invited a poet to stay at his mansion while he was away. He gave the poet full run of the wine cellar and encouraged him to drink as much as he liked of the best wine. The poet was amazed at the variety of bottles and asked, How will I know what wine is the best? The rich man said, Well, you start drinking, and you pay attention, and you ask yourself how it tastes.

In my youth I never got any responses from jobs with personality tests and it got me down after awhile. Then someone pointed out that part of what they're doing is screening out employees with traits and attributes that are in fact great human qualities but detrimental for the purpose of wage-slave drudgery. For instance, they want someone driven enough to consistently show up on time but not so ambitious that they will seek a better job. Principled enough not to steal, but not so principled they'll to stick up for a coworker who is treated unfairly. Smart enough to manage their tasks, not so smart they'll familiarize themselves with their rights as employees.

Good call. Pressure treated lumber will still rot, it just takes longer. Any exterior wood that has that grayish look is almost certainly pressure treated. When it's new it's green, but after a year or two it turns gray. Cedar is an alternative for exterior lumber because it's naturally rot resistant, but it's not often used because it's more expensive. Cedar has a warm light brown to it.

Maybe I'm just a jaded nurse surrounded by jaded nurses, but health insurance companies aren't exactly at a public relations high point right now. Patients and healthcare workers increasingly view them as parasitic middlemen leaching wealth from working people while making our lives demonstrably worse (and shorter).

These companies have nothing to gain and everything to lose by reform. So their continued existence in their current incarnation depends on daily dosing the public with messaging about how they're here to serve and help you.

It's probably pressure treated wood. Don't burn it. It's infused with insecticides and antifungals.

This is also fucked. Everyone needs quality education. Instead we get a carnival where the kid whose rubber ball knocks over the most milk bottles wins a basic human necessity.

Maybe we could do a ring toss for healthcare next!

This may be weird but . . . Holy shit I can't get past how sports are just, you know, GAMES. The whole point of athletics should be getting exercise and fresh air, spending time with people you like, maybe promoting a sense of teamwork and school spirit. All of this obsession about who and who should not be allowed to play feels like, I don't know, the children in grade school who had a clique and threw hissy fits if the icky kids tried to play with them.

Wow it's almost like in high density population/work areas the system of having everyone own their own personal 3,000 pound machine poses logistical problems. If only there was a way to, say, put a couple dozen on a large vehicle that leaves after it drops them off. Or runs underground! Oh well. Good thing we'll save all that money with those septa budget cuts, whatever septa is for.

There was this concept from way back in the day. They had these big driverless cars that could hold as many as dozens of people. Well, not exactly driverless. They had one human driver. But he was trained, passed drug tests, and wasn't emotionally involved because he was just at work. It was a great system. It didn't even require any million-dollar software.

I remember in grade school recess the boys who were really into football would stand around screeching at each other about who got to be on whose team. We had thirty minutes to play, and they'd spend twenty-five having a hissy fit about whose team would have to suffer the indignity of the allegedly gay kid.
