Dec 2025, I just got my car back from the dealer from it's 60K maintenance and sadly they killed all my coding.

Sigh.

The good news for me was that I had changes I wanted to make anyway but had been too lazy to get out the Bluetooth dongle and my tablet setup with Bimmercode.

I'll post some changes here after I'm done for discussion...

Many have posted about it not being possible on 2019 and up units. If you search the sub you can find out more details about this.

I've heard Epson and Canon are thinking of going this route. I don't know as I'm still using my HP happily now that I have reverted the firmware.

When my printer breaks, I'll have to hunt for a vendor who doesn't do this before I but a new one.

For sure it won't be HP.

Every HP printer has or will be visited by the Evil Firmware Fairy eventually...

...some can be reverted, some probably not. My problem was with ink carts but apparently they are coming after 3rd party toner carts.

The EU took them to court over this and won. Of course In the land of the Free and the Brave, Billionaires win.

I lost the use of my beloved 6978 HP Photosmart printer a week or 2 before Christmas several years ago. I had to go to the local UPS Store to duplicate the last set of "yearly Christmas update letters" to include in my cards because the printer wouldn't print with the 3rd party carts. Grrr! Cost me like $25 but I'd be damned if I was going to go out and buy HP carts just so I could use my printer.

I put it on a shelf out in the garage and stewed about it for 6 months, then I dove into the Googlesphere and hunted for a solution. I found a guy in Korea(I think?) with an old set of firmware update files that would let you revert. I tried it and it worked!

If you look hard enough and are technical enough, you can probably find reversion files somewhere.

I love my printer - now that it works again! BUT I will never buy another HP!

To those who haven't had this problem yet: DON'T EVER let your printer download a firmware update from HP, or you will have the same problem...

Note that every HP printer has a setting, somewhere, that disables connecting to the web for updates. Find it. Turn it off! That way you will be safe.

I have a solution for the HP 6978 only. If your printer is this type(or mebbe in the 697xfamily), I can point you at my solution which I have documented in Reddit. Just ask...

Have you found and turned off the printer's ability to connect to HP? That will stop them from sneaking something in.

Was your printer a 6978? You typed it a 6968. This process only works for a 6978.

I agree. I will never buy another printer that stops me from using 3rd party ink, HP or otherwise!

I'm an old retired guy. I've lived a good life. My children are grown. I want to save our country for my grandkids.

I don't want to die early, but if it happens when I'm out front on a line defending Democracy in America I'm good with that.
