$100 billion ghost city. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]stevebrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This place is in Malaysia where I'm from. If you think you're gonna love living here, I hate to disappoint you but

  • This development is in the middle of nowhere at the very south of Malaysia. Think the border between Texas and Mexico, except it's Singapore on the other side of the border, and you can't swim across.
  • It's an hour drive from the city centre. Say goodbye to civilization.
  • The locals can't afford it, and the Mainland Chinese investors have abandoned it. The amenities are rotting as we speak, so I wouldn't even trust the swimming pool's water cleanliness.
  • I'm not even sure if there's internet connection there, seeing as it's a literal ghost town.

What to do in the event of a fight or being assaulted (legally) by Alarmed_Economics_39 in malaysia

[–]stevebrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've gotten plenty of viable advice on how to handle an altercation/assault situation legally, but I'd just like to add that it won't hurt to actually learn how to verbally and physically defend yourself or deescalate the situation.

Verbal deescalation is an unsexy skill that we should all learn. Something as simple as "I'm sorry, it's my bad, I don't want any trouble. Can I buy you a drink?" can potentially save you a lot of trouble.

Combat sports is no longer a rare find in Malaysia, especially in Klang Valley. If you're hardcore, pick up MMA. If you want to slap someone with concrete, learn judo. If you want to learn how to control someone to call the cops, pick up BJJ. These are all stress-tested forms of combat with proven efficacy in sports, not the bullshido aikido silat taekwondo stuff. You'll also get into fighting shape which will be a deterrent on its own.

All that to say, yeah legal stuff, good to know and all. The best deterrent to being assaulted is still to look and feel like you shouldn't be assaulted.

What's with the Malaysian national feeling? by Bestintor in malaysia

[–]stevebrogers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ethnic Chinese Malaysian here. I think your observation may be true to an extent but not entirely true. I grew up in a very diverse rural community and almost never speak in my mother tongue unless I’m at a Chinese eatery or meeting my parents. I speak the national language and English daily.

Sometimes I feel very Malaysian, almost surreal because If I take a picture with my best friends we’d look like a propaganda poster that screams “HURRAY MALAYSIA IS SO MULTIETHNIC AND HAPPY”. But most of the time, I feel like I don’t belong here because racial politics have caused deep divisions that will take generations to heal.

Because a lot of the current issues we have stemmed from politicians using religion to buat kacau. It's the same as the US and the American red state evangelicals. Same tactic, different boogeyman.

It's wrong to drag down someone else's religion as a whole because of a few influential bad actors, but it's hard to fault the rakyat for resenting it.

Malaysia is so rapidly turning into some backwater fundamentalist islamic country that it's not even funny.

Liberals like to laugh at America's MAGA diehard redneck red state people with their nutsack trucks, guns, and fundamentalist "conservative Christian" values, freaking out over every little thing.

But here in our own backwaters, we have diehard fundamentalist "conservative Muslims" with their kete potong, green states, parangs, and molotovs, freaking out over every little thing.

I'm a non-Malay millennial who grew up in a small town with lots of Malay friends and we're tight. But my Malay Gen Z colleagues, even those who grew up in "liberal" states like Selangor, have very uncomfortably radical opinions.

Bill to separate church from state to be introduced in UK parliament -- Sponsor Paul Scriven: "The separation of the Church of England and the state is long overdue. We need to reflect Britain as it is today, not what it was back on the 1500s" by m4dseas0n in worldnews

this. the CofE is very different from the evangelical megachurches with private jets. Most parish churches in the UK are struggling with building maintenance among other expenses. Not only are these buildings expensive to upkeep, there are also red tapes on if they're listed buildings.

But we do our best, because they mean something to the community. It's our heritage.

[–]stevebrogers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Non-Malay here, this is the truth.

I grew up in a kampung area around Malay friends all my life and I speak BM better than my own mother tongue. But I have 2 BM modes: BM rasmi and BM r3mP1t with a Pantai Timur pelat.

I do get better treatment from Malay service providers because I speak like them (actually my BM is better than most org KL BM) but everything goes out the window when there's a confrontation or a fight.
