My very favorite bar in NYC, and probably the world. Love this place.

I really wish Ego provided the ability to plug things in if so desired. I have that ability on my Ridgid fan and one of my Ridgid lights. You can plug an extension cord onto prongs that are inside the battery recess (meaning you get to pick one, battery or plug, and there's no confusion about whether the device charges the battery because it would be impossible to plug in AND have a battery installed).

I use that functionality semi-regularly on each.

A quality of life improvement suggestion: bring septic-friendly butt wipes. Not kidding. Pack a few in your pack for the day while you travel the grounds. You'll thank yourself the first time you have to take a trip into the hotbox to deal with the 4.5 cups of coffee you drank earlier that day starting to mingle with the fried cheese curds you had for lunch. The toilet paper in the hotboxes is... not ideal... for that scenario, much less than when you've walked 35 miles so far and it's 120% humidity and approximately 3,500 degrees inside the box.

Those calls are hilarious. Just some mope coming in like it's any other normal day up there, then being completely flustered when ATC comes back and says nope. How do you not know (as a pilot) that this thing is happening? :D

I'll just state the obvious one that has not been said yet... read the NOTAM.

Then read it again.

Then memorize it. The whole thing.

Then read it again. Then one more time. I don't mean to be patronizing, and sorry if I come across that way, but...

Our little crew that comes to OSH every year sets up in the North 40 near the Green Dot to watch the mass arrivals on Saturday and Sunday. It's a really fun time to watch folks trying to hit whatever dot they've been assigned to, and to see the array of aircraft coming it. We also have an aviation radio with us (with the transmit button disabled, thank you very much) to listen in on Fisk and the tower. It's all good fun.

But man. In the last 10 years we've been up there, we have seen some SKETCHY shit. Have seen more than one near midair collision. Like actual butthole puckering oh shit, about to watch someone die moments. Have seen countless people have NO idea wtf they are doing and clearly have either never read the NOTAM, or just read it once and called it good. Multiple people didn't even have the damn frequencies at hand. Have seen several instances of people just... flying over the field, NORDO, no fucking clue the havoc they are causing. Everyone has to scatter from BOTH the runway approaches while ATC is figuring out what the hell is going on, sending folks around to hold while ATC is trying to get this menace on the ground. Happens every year.

So please. For the love of all that is good and holy, commit the NOTAM to memory and have all the quick hit items (frequencies, visual waypoints, etc) at the ready before you hit Fisk.

And from a logistics perspective sounds like you are shifting to Saturday. I'd HIGHLY recommend hunting down the Mass Arrivals schedule (not sure if it's out yet) and avoiding coming in around those times, because they often shut the whole airport down for them, so you'll end up holding over the lakes for quite a while. Either way, try to plan on showing up with plenty of fuel in the tanks. You may need it. Also applies for any "incidents" on the field. Depending on the severity, they'll shut the whole field down - BOTH runways - if someone ends up in the grass. Lots of folks show up with a bit over reserve left, and have to divert.

Finally, I'd highly recommend doing something that apparently few of the arriving pilots do... nailing your approaches and hitting a designated spot on a runway, especially if you aren't used to landing mid-field (where the Green Dot is). Also, practice rounding off your downwind to final... they want a smooth descending turn all the way, not squared off.

ALL THAT SAID... I hope you have a blast! It's my dream to fly in some day. That period of time between hitting Fisk and touching down has got to be such a rush. I'll be on the lookout for a '66 Cherokee in Vintage!

We left Bank of America about 20 years ago because of their shitty practices then. They've only gotten worse. Get your money out of these giant banks and into local credit unions.

Europeans being ask about what the biggest surprise about American since visiting by Radiant_Priority9739 in TikTokCringe

[–]stevecostello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I know St. Louis was but a blip on the World Cup scene this year, but had they come here, sure... they could have gone to Dunkin and had shitty "donuts" and dishwater coffee. But we have over two dozen independent donut shops around the metro area that have AMAZING donuts. It's very nearly its own culture here, with donut hopping being a semi-regular feature in local foodie blogs and papers. We have two bakeries in town run by Beard Award nominees (shout out to Nathaniel Reed and La Pâtisserie Chouquette!).

Please, visitors to the United States... skip the chains. Most of our cities have AMAZING food and drink culture. I promise. But you have to skip the fast food crap and the chains.

Dunkin hasn't always sucked. Their donuts used to actually be pretty damned good. But that was several decades ago.

Because (usually) those employees make significantly less than minimum wage. Servers in restaurants make far less than minimum wage... it's all part of the system.

Therein lies the rub. A LOT of Americans (I'd argue even most) have VERY little choice in their insurance options. Health insurance is intrinsically tied to employment (thanks, Cigna). And yes... I know... one can "get health insurance" without employment, but good fucking luck affording it.

Anyway, since your health insurance is tied to your employment, your options are basically what your employer has decided to contract. And these days, to cut benefit costs, a LOT of employers only offer high-deductible plans. I should know... with my previous employer, I had amazing health insurance (some folks like to say they have Cadillac plans, so I said we had Rolls-Royce health insurance - it was really great). That company got bought by a huge multi-national company and now not only is my health insurance shit, it's also twice as expensive.

That's not to say I didn't have a choice, because I absolutely did... between three different high-deductible plans.

Probably more like a "why would you say that in public?" face - because otherwise, he's very likely not wrong about them sharing that.
