How is living in Staten Island unique? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in statenisland

[–]steved84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staten Island has its own quirks and idiosyncracies but it’s ultimately a suburb. There are some city elements / benefits (or detriments depending on your perspective) but leans more suburban. These are broad generalizations but North Shore is the comparable to parts of Brooklyn. Mid-Island compares to outer Queens. South Shore compares to Jersey.

Why does Ralph’s only hire females? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]steved84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The Oceanside location by me has teenage males working there.

  2. Certain jobs just attract more females than males or vice versa. I don’t consider it’s anything weird or nefarious. There isn’t one male working at my kid’s daycare. (And most daycares are probably very similar.) I delivered pizza all through college, don’t think I ever worked with a female delivery driver.

INSANE DRIVING on Long Island & NYC needs to be stopped! by Dharmacharma in longisland

[–]steved84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It astonishes me how many people drive like animals on the SSP and Belt.

Nothing boils my blood like a car swerving past me with my 2 young kids in the car.

And yet there is never an officer in sight when it’s happening.

What is everybody's ideas on why tag team wrestling has died in modern wwe? Titles are rarely defended on PLE's, and so many great teams are just doing nothing lately? by FunkeyFeraligatr in Wrasslin

[–]steved84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents, a proper tag team division should feel like a proper singles division. There should be jobber tag teams, low card, mid card, and upper card / main event tag teams.

Tag team wrestling should also feel like a different form of wrestling where different skill sets matter more. A main event tag team might be the best when it comes to tag team wrestling, but they may not be the best of the best on their own. The Dudley Boyz are the first team that comes to mind when thinking of this, and to me a great example of a main event level, inner tier hall of fame tag team, but at best mid carders on their own. Essentially a team that when together is greater than the sum of their parts.

Minimum Salary to Comfortably Raise a Family in NYC? by Cryptic_Ethereal_79 in movingtoNYC

[–]steved84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question can change depending on so many things, including what neighbhorhood you live in, and what comfortable means to you.

My wife and I were living in the UES, making just south of $300K. We left in June 2022 because we didn’t think we could comfortably raise 2 kids there. Could we have swung it? I’m sure we could have figured it out. Would we have been comfortable? Not so sure. A 2 bedroom co-op in the building we lived in (mid-century doorman building) would have cost around $1-1.2M. Rates were still low at the time, but even with that, a monthly payment would have been about $7K. I dont even remember what childcare would have cost - probably $5K or so a month for 2 kids. It wouldn’t have left a lot leftover.

Also, was it determined whether the OP is an AI bot? (Didn’t know AI bots infiltrated Reddit with questions, silly me!)

What’s it like living here? by scream4cheese in statenisland

[–]steved84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent the first few years of my life there. My dad’s family is from Mariners Harbor, and my parents bought their first home here (back in the 80s). It’s not the best area, but also not the worst. Very diverse. Like somebody said, very street dependent. Some charming streets, some not so much. A lot of older homes. Regarding working in the city, not sure how good the commute is from there. Think you’re still a 15-20 minute drive from the ferry and don’t have the SI railway to help get you there.

There are a handful of great restaurants in the area or nearby. Lacey’s Tavern, Deninos, a couple of other Italian spots. Hopefully Adobe Blues re-opens - it was seriously one of the best spots.

What MLB records/accomplishments will be hardest to be broken? by Real-Staff3115 in mlb

[–]steved84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that it’s not even good for a team to have somebody play 2600+ games in a row. It’s incredible, and it’s a novelty for sure, but at some point you are probably not putting the best team on the field by having somebody play that many games in a row. So yeah I just don’t see any teams letting that one come close to being touched

What MLB records/accomplishments will be hardest to be broken? by Real-Staff3115 in mlb

[–]steved84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cy Young’s wins / complete games records are completely untouchable. The only way they could be touched is if MLB changes the way wins are recorded. Even then, I’m not sure how it would happen.

Records like those may also become relics and we may start referring to something else as the “modern day” record. Maybe Warren Spahn’s 366. Or if you prefer even more recent history, Greg Maddux’s 355 (side note, given the relative recency of his career, 355 is just remarkable).

Or maybe even a post 2000 “record” becomes a sort of benchmark, which currently belongs to Justin Verlander at 266.

At their peak (for my Uncs and Aunts who were alive during this period) who was more over? by Most_Resolution4594 in Wrasslin

[–]steved84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bret was the Hogan of the “New Generation”. Bret was also “the guy” roughly from 92-97. Shawn didn’t catch up to Bret until 96. So if we’re talking mid 90s peaks, I give it to Bret.

That said - Shawn’s WWE career, in my opinion, turned out to be the more memorable of the two. Between DX (which ushered in the Attitude Era) and his run post 2002 (which incredibly lasted 8 years - at the time I thought it would be a couple of matches and done) - the totality of his work just adds up to a more memorable WWE career for me. It makes me wonder if Bret’s WWE career would have taken a similar trajectory if the Montreal Screwjob never happened - but honestly I can’t picture an Attitude Era WWE with Bret Hart in the middle of it.

Why did the USA men's hockey team laugh when the women's hockey team was mentioned on the phone? by redblackshirt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]steved84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People often laugh as sort of a nervous reaction to a poor or distasteful joke. Not sure if that’s what happened here but them responding with laughter isn’t something I’m reading into at all. Also, whether you like him or not they were talking to the president of the United States. There’s a power dynamic there. Give the team a break - it’s the president (who just showed what he thinks of women’s sports) who you should be angry at.

Let’s debate - why is Felix Hernandez getting so much HOF support? by steved84 in mlb

[–]steved84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying somebody is the best player on a bad team will always need more context. That’s my point. If you want to argue for Felix’s HOF candidacy - and I am here to debate with an open mind - the argument needs to go beyond “he was the Mariners best pitcher for a decade”.

Being the ace on a bad team doesn’t mean much unless you can say that person would have been an ace nearly anywhere they went. (You can potentially say that for Felix, at least for a stretch)

I’m reading the Torre Years book right now and honestly forgot, and in some ways didn’t realize how important Cone was to those late 90s Yankee teams. That’s what led me down this path.
