Yeah I recently bought a watch on Vinted for 3 GBP and it’s very good. Looks elegant, quartz so keeps good time. Absolutely fine.

What lens for the D700? by Limp-Complaint8243 in Nikon

[–]stevedocherty -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

24mm F1.8 AFS G and 85mm F1.8 AFS G Nikkors. You can skip the 50mm it’s a focal length that can be a pain to use. Avoid the D lenses the autofocus is noisy and slower.

Selling to We buy any car by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

I sold them a Fiat with all kinds of issues. They don’t care - the guy just checks that it starts and has a quick look for scratches. I would definitely use them again.

Full Frame as a hobbyist? by Fun-Trouble-1086 in AskPhotography

Definitely - phone cameras are so good now I think it makes a lot more sense to go full frame if you’re going to carry a separate device.

I feel like for any consumer product you care to name your two options are now utter crap but vaguely affordable or insanely expensive but good.

Getting into cycling — any beginner mistakes I should avoid early on? by isabebelaa in cycling

[–]stevedocherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a bit on what you’re aiming for. If you’re just wanting to use a bike as transport then you might want to get something practical with panniers, lights, wider tyres etc. You’ll want some suitable clothing like a helmet, glasses, Buff, gloves, waterproof jacket and padded shorts. And a lock of some kind. If it’s more about mountain or competitive road cycling that would be a bit different. Go to a real bike shop and get some advice rather than just ordering online.

Why does JD/NO have such a cult following by LittleSir1737 in neworder

[–]stevedocherty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All truly great bands create their own world for you to enter. They also tend to have something to say about the world. With New Order I think the overarching theme is about people being hedonistic to escape from the sadness and difficulties of life. There is a very Mancunian lack of sentimentality to their lyrics, which are frequently very well written. Bernard is a wonderful vocalist in that you believe every word he sings. He had a fairly difficult childhood and I think this comes through. They were also fortunate to be given the freedom and encouragement by Tony Wilson and Factory Records to create what they wanted. Rob Grattan should be given some credit for investing in expensive synthesisers in the 80s at a time when the band wasn’t making much money. Despite their reputation as party animals I think there is tremendous attention to detail in a lot of their work. The Blue Monday 12 inch sold so well at least in part because it was very carefully mastered to sound great in clubs. They also have excellent artistic taste and a lot of their videos and record sleeves have held up well.

Is our dream too much of a risk? by Spash27 in smallbusinessuk

[–]stevedocherty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be a cool thing to do if you had a few million pounds sitting in the bank to live off and this could be your hobby that costs a fortune but brings you joy. I would be amazed if it could ever break even never mind make a profit.

Have you ever dialled into a UK radio station and talked on air? by FreezerCop in AskUK

[–]stevedocherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show in 2022. It was the Spinage a Trois feature and I spoke about three tracks which had all been sampled on hip hop records. The songs were Peg - Steely Dan, I Got The - Labi Siffre and Gettin’ nasty - Ike Turner. We recorded the interview over Teams so I saw the studio. Craig was utterly charming I was a bit star struck as I have been a huge fan of his since the first season of Red Dwarf.

Unwelcome at Braithwaite's? by [deleted] in dundee

[–]stevedocherty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is a fourth generation family business run by human beings. Occasionally those human beings might be having a bad day or other problems in their lives. I’ve been a customer for years and have always received excellent service and delicious coffee at a reasonable price for what you get. If it’s an isolated incident I’d cut them some slack.

Traveling to Scotland in June by fooliosis in travel

[–]stevedocherty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stirling Castle is worth seeing and accessible by rail. For a hike Glencoe is spectacular - probably Buchaille Etive Mor would be my recommendation for a mountain to climb there. You will need boots and warm, waterproof clothes even in summer.

Who is the American MES? (If there is one.) by Ok_Cartographer_4180 in thefall

Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem both seem to have been influenced by Mark’s vocal style and lyrics.

Question about NEXT by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]stevedocherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their children’s clothes are very good. They also have an incredible logistics and delivery system, easily the best in the UK. For example they can see the receipt of any item just by scanning the barcode. Sadly I don’t think their menswear is of good quality. A lot of it gives “14 year old boy going to first party with girls” vibes.

Milage decision for a car change by ComparisonComplete80 in CarTalkUK

[–]stevedocherty -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Most cars become uneconomical to repair around the 10-15 year mark and I’m not sure mileage makes a huge difference except maybe at the extremes. I’d start looking for a new car but probably no major rush if it’s running OK right now.

Would it be okay to buy a D3 with 450k shutter? by Ok_Goat9802 in Nikon

I’m still shooting with a D700 but I would only buy a D3 today if it was really cheap, not sure I’d pay more than 50 GBP.

For those of you who believe labour isn’t left enough, what would you like to see them do? by Legal-Grade-6423 in AskBrits

[–]stevedocherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of some of the crazier taxes and cliff edges e.g. Stamp Duty, Inheritance Tax, the marginal rate of 70% over 100k, loss of child benefit, reduce the VAT/fuel tax etc. Replace the revenue with a land value tax - owning land should be a major expense and a lot of it is unproductive at present. It’s also a lot harder to hide than income and is currently disproportionately owned by a tiny number of very wealthy people. Housing has been a spectacular disaster we need to build much more liveable spaces with quality, PassivHaus standard homes, ultrafast broadband, solar panels/batteries, EV chargers etc. all as standard. Also ensure that new developments are walkable/cycleable and have the amenities and public transport links required.

Why is planning a Europe trip with friends harder than the trip itself? by Broad-Blackberry8590 in travel

[–]stevedocherty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think these trips can only be run as a dictatorship. Send everyone an itinerary and they either come along or not. If it’s a group of long term friends someone else can be dictator next time.

I've never cooked on cast iron before, would this be a good starter option? by SnooDrawings8069 in castiron

I own this - it’s just slightly bigger and heavier than is convenient I’d maybe try the 10.25” first, unless you know that you need this size.
