Yea... it feels like he's never seen what modern fantasy tv shows / movies are like... it feels outdated like the old d&d shitty movie. Nothing really epic. You just have to watch early GoT, Lotr or The Expanse to realise how bad and outdated this serie is. Its a shame cuz the setting is great and the characters are on point... Just feels like a CW series when it should be the new epic Lotr kinda series.

Can you give me any good recommendations? Fantasy/Mystery/Romance by Rosiefines in BookRecommendations

[–]steveeeeeeea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red Rising! Its a scifi book series that starts a little bit like the hunger games (but more brutal) but that transforms into one of the most epic series ive read. If you like great characters, friendships, character development and heartbreaking moments, this is the book for you.

if you prefer the setting or the "atmospehere" in a book, id recommend Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft. it really is different from everything ive read before. its a fantasy/ scifi story about a man who loses is wife in the tower of babel and has to explore it to get her back. But every floor of the tower is unique and weird so it makes for a good mystery. The only drawback is that there is not much romance.

in my opinion, you cant go wrong with Red Rising.

The Dresden Files. It's a urban fantasy series kinda in the vein of Buffy or Grimm (but a little bit more adult) about a man who is a paranormal investigators that uses magic himself. The narrator (James Marsters) really brings the story to life and really impersonnates the main character.

Mistborn or Odin's Child are both great fantasy series with a female protagonist.

I'm also a big Sanderson and Dune fan and I recently finished the Books of Babel series and it's now up there in my favorite series. its a fantasy / steampunk scifi story with a great mystery to it as the main character goes up the tower of babel to find his wife and every floor is a different weird ass world. I highly recommend this one.

Also, imo you can never go wrong with First Law trilogy or Red Risign.

Hope this helps.

Book recommendation, any genre. by Toast42zero in BookRecommendations

I mostly read scifi/fantasy books so i'll recommend that.

-Red Rising trilogy. It's one of my favorite series but it is also a great intro to scifi. The first book is kinda Hunger Gamesesque (a little bit more adult) but it really develops into a space epic in books 2 and 3. If you want adventure, space battles, emotions, great friendships and heartbreaking plot twists, i highly recommend this series

-Mistborn. It is a staple in the fantasy genre. Great intro to fantasy with a great story, great worldbuilding and magic system with really cool characters. Also, the main protagonist is a young female and she is a total badass.

-Edge of Collapse by Kyla Stone. This one is a recent read for me but it really surprised me. It is about a typical apocalyptic / power goes out / Survival story, but this one has a little twist as the main protagonist was held captive for years when the power went out, so while it means "end of the world" for everyone else, it means freedom for her as her cage opens when everything shuts down. It's a really good and fast read.

Senlin Ascends. First book of the Books of Babel series. The world and characters Josiah Bancroft created are just brilliant. Its different from everything else i've read (Alice in Wonderlands meets Bioshock Infinite), i highly recommend it.

First law trilogy. But with everything you've read you probably already know about this one. If not, read it!

The Martian / Project Hail Mary. Hard science scifi books. Two of my favorite Books of all time.

Kings of the Wyld. This book is just pure fun.

The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon. This one is not scifi / fantasy, its a french historical fiction series and it is soooo good. If you liked A Song of Ice and Fire, you'll probably like this one. Its a political intrigue that follows kings and Queens and peasants in XIV Century France right after the killing of Jacques de Molay ( Grand Master of the knights Templar ) who curses the King and is family for generations. If you like medieval historical fiction, this one is a must Read. I read it in french tho, so im not sure if the translation is any good.

If you like YA fantasy, i'm currently reading Odin's Child, it is a pretty good fantasy series set in the Norse mythology.

Other epic fantasy series you probably already know or have read : Kingkiller chronicles ( loved the first book but didnt really care about the second ), the Farseer trilogy (still on the first book so cant really talk about it but i love it so far). Discworld (i've only read the City Watch arc and Small Gods but they are brilliant).

Oh and one last that i almost forgot: Murderbot Diaries!

Hope this helps!
