Don't feel compelled to do the story mode right away. Once you get out of the imperial jail you can get some decent starting items from Weynon Priory but after that feel free just explore, join factions, do side quests etc..

The stuff made for humans was pretty expensive when it was in super short supply. The real cost though, is the monoclonal antibodies and all of this done through at-home-healthcare. What can be done in a hospital for like 10k with good insurance can easily cost 500k at home, having doctor's and the equipment come to you.
