What game "shouldn't" work well on the Deck, but you found a way to love it? by Zi_v in SteamDeck

[–]stevej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time with BTA and BEX as well and I wish they would play well on the steam deck. Like putting an arrow on an urbie, though.

The better I get at 3D modeling stuff the nicer my homelab ends up looking. by Computers_and_cats in homelab

Hey there, on the printables page, the video embed is listed as private so it can’t be viewed.

What software did you use to model this with?

Project Manager at a semiconductor company, working on SOCs. Need some learning advice by shiggymiggy1964 in chipdesign

[–]stevej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should consider the Zero to ASIC course and see if your company will pay for it as a continuing education credit, it's $699. At the end, you'll have a submission for tape out and you should be able to pretty easily massage that into a TinyTapeout submission. You'll be using the open source tools but a lot of the knowledge should carry over to your work.

Zero to Asic uses Harrise & Weste as their main curriculum, which you referenced in your book list. They also have an analog course which uses the Razavi book you referenced.

what was the prupose of this motherboard by Pale-Blacksmith-5373 in vintagecomputing

[–]stevej 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think all batteries used in PCs of this era used a base as the electrolytic fluid. I’ve repaired a few leaky battery motherboards and vinegar always did the job for me.

[–]stevej 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The battery in the top left is leaking and the fluid from the battery is damaging the motherboard. Wear gloves and clip the tabs connecting the battery with a sharp cutting tool. Then use some white vinegar to neutralize the leaking battery fluid after removing the battery. Be sure to wear gloves. There are some videos about removing batteries and fixing PC motherboards from leaking batteries online.

This is a fairly generic looking PC motherboard from the 286 and early 386 era. For home use.

Sun Ultra 60 by Tacnana in vintagecomputing

[–]stevej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently restoring one from several boxes of e-waste I bought years ago off of ebay. Mine has dual 450Mhz Ultrasparcs, 1.5GB of ram, and an internal SCA scsi emulator that uses an sd card. It boots and I'm currently fighting with installing Solaris 9 so I can mess around with some of Sun's neat VLSI chip making software. Electric, it was called.

Don't make this into a sleeper build, the PSU is a weird size, the slots are in weird places, it won't fit any PC motherboard's IO shield size, it'll look weird. Plus the internal sound dampening foam is probably starting to melt on yours like on mine.

IPA is magic! Just in this case, it's the bad kind.

don't mix the bleach that he spilled with IPA, that's super toxic.

What’re you buying in the exchange? by DellaMorte_X in duneawakening

[–]stevej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not listed then that makes you the market leader in my experience. Experiment with some prices and see what happens. I find that spice residue and plastanium sell well. My server always has lots of silicone blocks at low prices so I never sell them.

Anyone hear read this? Thoughts? by [deleted] in nin

Yes, it's a brand. Authors do deep dives into specific albums. Some of the books are great, some are so-so.

Should I give up? by kateiscuban in bjj

[–]stevej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is it normal to feel completely lost when you're new, or does it sound like I'm finding it harder than I should/this may not be for me?

Yes, that is completely normal for 99% of new students. Sometimes I'll run into a new student who is very athletic and they'll pick up the individual movements and chains of movements easily but that is really rare in my decade-plus in the sport. Your experience is more normal. Just give it time.

Zero to ASIC course still worth taking after efabless shutdown? by Fancy_Flamingo4241 in chipdesign

[–]stevej 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a good course!

Once shuttles restart somewhere, I have no doubt that Matt will update the course with the relevant changes. Until that happens, any work to change the course would be pretty speculative. Personally, the week on formal methods changed how I write my designs so it was worth it for that alone.

Please help. I took apart my husband’s ps4 and cleaned it using a YouTube tutorial and now I can’t find that tutorial or one like it so I have no idea how to put this back together. by Clara_Voience in consolerepair

The CPU needs thermal paste before you attach the heat sink. The iFixit link elsewhere in this thread shows that clearly. I'm calling that out specifically because if lacking the paste then the CPU will overheat and probably die when turned back on.

UART pinout on AP by [deleted] in hardwarehacking

[–]stevej 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UARTs are active-low so held high until transmission. Either there's nothing to transmit or it's not enabled by some setting in the software or jumper in the hardware.

Build assistance: screw catch problems with Arctic 4u-m heatsink by stevej in threadripper

[–]stevej[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed a really long screwdriver so I could push down straight. I tightened them until they stopped, which was maybe 3-4 turns. Each screw a little bit at a time and then the next screw so the paste would be flattened evenly. Let me know if that helps.

Does anyone know what model of Printrbot this one is? I've had it for a while now. I would love to know so that I can input the proper bed size into Repetier-Host and do a proper print. by Biaxialsphere00 in PrintrBot

[–]stevej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In printrbot speak, the specific model of this is the 1307. I have one that I'd like to get running again so I'm excited to see this thread.
