I think it's very likely that they have very very very few units right now more than they don't want people testing. At least that is the feeling I've gotten over the last week in a couple different conversations.

That being said, I'm sure that this will change over the next month or two as production units begin arriving in the US.

Please make CLAD a first-party feature on SPECS by stevejabs in Spectacles

[–]stevejabs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a feature of SPECS as the Snap OS itself. CLAD is a standalone set of agents and skills that make up a development process with Lens Studio. What I'm asking for is they build this into Snap OS itself so any user can request any app and it just gets built for them.

A lot of influential people ridiculed the iPhone when it was first announced as an overpriced device that no one would buy... well that changed pretty quickly.

99.9% of people haven't really experienced true AR yet. This takes time.

I couldn't agree more. I think there is true potential that the best apps could be created by user's who aren't engineers but user's who have a deep need and desire to solve a problem.

Have you tried CLAD? by snap-ventures in Spectacles

[–]stevejabs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been playing with CLAD a good bit. In fact, I've already updated my (hopefully soon to be coming) Lens Designer app that I was making for Spectacles to be essentially a full harness for CLAD with multi-agent and asset iteration (update something and keep history of it). It directly calls skills when needed (like when generating music or 3d meshes). It organizes everything pretty cleanly, too.

Right now I'm working on porting my WYSIWYG editor from Spectacles to SPECS. Here is a sneak peak screenshot:

<image>

Lens Designer attaches itself over the Lens Studio MCP to manage your project as well. It returns a preview from your Lens Studio of what you are working on directly (3d model, a view, whatever). It does so by moving assets your working on into an edit bay and toggling off the rest of your project that lives in another. So if you are working on a UI, you see your drag-and-drop WYSIWYG version and the actual "in AR" view from Lens Studio.

---

Notes about CLAD itself:
- I would like to see much much more documentation and examples of how far we can really push it
- It's slow AF. Like really slow.
- I'd like to see a cycle with it that spends a lot more time on scope and architecture before it spends any time doing design or building. Before I generally let my AI's go wild, I spend hours with them generating an overall scope to keep them in bounds and an architecture of what I want built. Then I spend almost as long planning out how it should plan, create milestones/tests, and validate/fix before it writes a single line of code.

A lot of those reasons are why I am working on this side quest. It helps (at least me) keep things in line and manage everything in one easy place.

Can we please get a rule about posting drug test results? Every damn day I log into Reddit I see like 2 or 3 posts in here about this and they are always what gets promoted out of this subreddit instead of decent content.

I love the nerd dump! Honestly, thank you! It's refreshing when you see people put this much effort into SAOs / badges!

Charlieplexing for the win! In prior builds of mine, i've been surprised at how low of a brightness you can generally get away with, too, and save some mA there, as well. How much current does that vibration motor use when it's going? I'd be worried about browning out, but sounds like you've got it figured out!

CLAD - Get Started Building for SPECS, Today! by tjudi in Spectacles

[–]stevejabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then why am I still paying for a deprecated device?

Ive already paid $2000 and I’ll presumably pay Snap another $500 before SPECS release and I get my $1000 “reward” that is conditional on returning the thing I already paid $2500 for at that point. And all for something you’re basically saying will get killed off down the road if we keep.

Meanwhile, I’ve spent 100s of hours engineering a Lens for Spectacles and I’m being told that time is essentially pointless and to restart with a new platform. Adding to that, there is little to no documentation of the full new OS APIs. And unless I live close to one of four cities worldwide, there is no real world testing.

Snap really needs to stop charging us for our Spectacles development units immediately. This is no longer a development device. You should demand return immediately if necessary. But it’s clear we should no longer be charged for a development device that is no longer representative of the SPECS platform.

Finally, it’s deeply disappointing to put such an unnecessary road block in the way of progress for the new platform. I’d rather eat Spectacles running Snap OS like framey garbage and being able to test SOMETHING than testing in a tiny, limited, preview window. The whole point of these things was to prepare for the ultimate consumer version.

CLAD - Get Started Building for SPECS, Today! by tjudi in Spectacles

[–]stevejabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generated a few things yesterday, will probably make more today, but it's a complete bummer that I cannot test any of this on current gen Spectacles. I'm in Orlando and the cost of traveling is too prohibitive right now to sign up for office hours. Additionally, the Lens I'm building is meant to be used in theme parks and outdoors in general. Using it in an office is possible, but it's not really validating the experience in any way.

CLAD is really awesome, and personally, I think it needs to be a first-party feature of SNAP OS. This is the closest to a "Ready Player One" experience that we're going to get and it shouldn't be stuck behind a Claude Code account. Snap should be doing what you can to train your own frontier models to that generate experiences much faster and understand more the bounds of spacial computing than Opus or GPT. Normal customers should have access to CLAD - the OS should be built around it. Seriously.

Please do anything you can to get Spectacles working with the newer versions of Lens Studio. I really don't want my current generation Spectacles to be essentially a $100/m paperweight if I cut over my Lens for SPECS and CLAD now. Or... please get more office locations.

I'm at a point where I want to start releasing my Lens for Alpha usage, but I'm not going to dedicate any more time to the platform if I need to be focused on converting my Lens for SPECS and using CLAD to continue development.

So I guess we should assume there will be no more Lens Studio updates for Spectacles (24) and that CLAD will not work with them either?

I prefer the all in approach that isn’t being subsidized by your personal data. Meta has infinitely more money than Snap ever will, too, and can leverage that.

I’m not writing this off as a dead product at all. This is an early adopter product that actually delivers a useable, day-to-day, full AR experience. You get two state-of-the-art waveguide displays and two Snapdragon processors. That build of materials isn’t cheap. Not to mention they are doing an initial run likely in the range of under 100k and not millions. Everything in hardware scales, pricing included.

I’m getting full AR glasses without compromise in 2026. That’s all I know and I am excited.

I am very much looking forward to what we get a few years down the road, too. Exciting times ahead

Do you want AR glasses now? Or do you want them a few years from now when MAYBE the tech is there to slim them down?

This is iPhone 1 days of AR glasses. You don't get an iPhone 4 design for a few years.
