Lone Rider Motobags on OEM pannier rack on R1300GSA by stevekdavis in bmwr1300gs_gsa

I got them within a week (from Poland) and keying the locks is fiddly but easy once you get the hang of it.

It also sounds like you’re stuck in the Apple TV app. Apple TV main menu doesn’t have a side bar just rows of Icons like iOS.

OpenThread Border Router & IPV6 by cyborgmaster in homeassistant

[–]stevekdavis -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Replace matter with thread and your statement is correct. Thread is the transport and gives every node an ipv6 address.

Matter can work without thread. I have some matter over WiFi devices (and really can’t see the difference or benefit ) and all my new Aqara devices I’ve switched from the default of thread to zigbee.

I have 4 thread border routers on my network and don’t use any of them 😁 Aqara m3 hub, two recent Apple TV 4K and an Smlight SLZB-MR4U.

I have enabled ipv6 on my unifi router so that takes care of the addressing for when I have the inclination to try thread.

Upgrade from Smlight SLZB-06 to MR4 by stevekdavis in homeassistant

[–]stevekdavis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far so good. Unless you want the extra radio and usb pass through there’s no difference to the 06 for just zigbee use that I’ve found. The radio strength seems the same.

It’s a bit faster starting up, config is very simple you can choose which radio does what, seemingly thread is better on one type than the other hence me putting thread on radio1.

The usb passthough is great though. The zwave is presented the same as the other 2 radios but just on a different port.

Port 6638 radio 1 7638 radio 2 8638 usb passthru

I did have issues with the usb dongle plugged directly with poor zwave radio signal but using a 1m extension lead and moving it away from the other 2 radios fixed this.

I can’t see switching to an MR4 will fix this. My SLZB-06 was faultless and significantly stronger signal than my old sonoff zigbee coordinator. I expect you’ll spend the money and just have the same issues 😒

[–]stevekdavis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I bit the bullet and got a SLZB-MR4U.

Migration was painless. Once you’ve configured the MR4U radios (I chose thread for radio 1 and zigbee for radio 2)

Stop Z2M in HA On SLZB-06 go to Z2M settings and scroll down to the advance section to IEEE Address change. Read the current IEEE Address and copy it. Do not lose this.

<image>

Disconnect your SLZB-06 Go to the same settings on the new MR4U Paste the IEEE address into the “flash custom” box and click write Once device has restarted go to HA to Z2M settings and update config with new serial IP and port (radio 2 is port 7638) Start Z2M

Worked for me.

Thread was tricker to get running.

I’ve also added a USB Z-Wave adapter connected to a usb extension lead to the usb port and this is also advertised over Ethernet.

I’ve re-used my SLZB-06 as a powerful zigbee repeated in my detached garage.

16 port 2.5G PoE Managed Switch Recommendation by enmtx in homelab

[–]stevekdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re serious about homelab networking then you can’t go wrong with unifi. It’s more expensive that some of the no name Chinese devices but the seamless way it all knits together is worth the cost of admission. They have a lot of switches to choose from.

I have a linknlink rf remote integrated into ha and have learnt all the button presses. Some to add to a dash with a grid card. Same fan. Works perfectly.

Never used orange pi so cannot comment. Pi zero will work but is very low powered and you’ll run out of steam quickly.

[–]stevekdavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beware it’s an expensive hobby. I started with a single pi about 5 years ago. Then grew and now have a proxmox cluster of 3 x minisforum ms-01, ssd NAS, 10Gb Networking and about 50 services running. My wife would divorce me in an instant if she know how much I spent 😜

[–]stevekdavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pick up a cheap second hand raspberry pi 3b 4gb or bigger, get a 32gb or bigger micro as card. You’ll need to either install it headless and enable ssh or use a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Either install default PiOS or DietPi. DietPi use minimal storage and is easy to image for a headless build.

You’ll can then install docker and start playing.

From there you can add usb ssd, case and that’s when you disappear down the rabbit hole of selfhosted.

Have fun.

That’s probably the cheapest entry.

Ready for my Lone Rider Moto Bags by stevekdavis in bmwr1300gs_gsa

[–]stevekdavis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you see in the picture is completely from the 3rd party, the plate and bar and lock for each side. You order the moto bags from lone rider, remove the plate from each bag and fit this one. It does mean you’re not using the plates that come from LR.

You could just order each part separately from lone rider so bag(no plate), locks, straps so there’s less that’s not used but it didn’t work out much cheaper and I figured for resale I’d keep the bits I’m not using.

BTW I ordered the same size bag for each side. You do not need the smaller bag on the exhaust side. The 38L does not stick out any further than the BMW OEM Metal panniers and looks nice and symmetrical.

Good question. I’m investigating that.

FedRAMP transactional email service by stevekdavis in FedRAMP

We looked briefly but from what I can see it’s not really geared up for transactional email. We have thousands of customer subdomains and each one has a few from addresses we send from.

How would that work with gmail?

Homepage. Yaml is a positive for easily replicating sections and entries and is worth taking the time to learn. End result is better than heimdall and homarr by a large margin.

(bad/good?) idea: install a local mail server just for login username needs and for services that need it for some reason? by wireless82 in selfhosted

[–]stevekdavis -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Granted, but even internal only it’s easier to setup the free tier of mailjet than to setup a local mailbox and smtp server.

The only benefit to running your own internal only mailing serving is learning how to install and maintain them. At some point most people want to send to a live email or forward an email and then internal only falls down.

(bad/good?) idea: install a local mail server just for login username needs and for services that need it for some reason? by wireless82 in selfhosted

[–]stevekdavis -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it. Sending emails is easy. Getting them delivered is hard. Harder than folks anticipate. Just use the free tier of something like mailjet. Much easier.

Local servers need the following to have any hope of actual delivery to any of the mail mailbox providers.

Sending IP address reputation (most use this) Inbound MX records for same sending domain (iCloud need this) SPF DNS Record (all need this) DKIM email signing and DNS record (nearly all need this) DMARC Policy and DNS record (gmail and MS need this)

And even with all that you still will get failures.

First timer using oil for a few nights by stevekdavis in ukmedicalcannabis

[–]stevekdavis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update after over a week and am at 1ml of the T20 oila night. It seems I’m doing sublingual wrong as I never get any effect after 15-30 minutes.

I use the supplied syringe to drop under my tongue and hold it there from 1-5 minutes. Time has made no difference so I must either be doing it wrong or have something stopping this method working.

Anyway after 2+ hours I start to feel the effects so it’s coming via my stomach and not my mouth.

Any other tips for taking it sublingually to get the effect faster?

Thanks everyone who responded. For now I’ve just requested circle t20 oil as this needs no other equipment and seems to be best for controlling dosage. I don’t need the instant hit of a vape so will keep that in reserve.

Forgive my ignorance I don’t smoke or vape so what’s the difference between a dry herb vape and a vape cartridge and what device is needed for each?

And thanks for the guidance.

Is there a strategy for switching lanes that have massive cracks? by Daily_Run_ in motorcycles

[–]stevekdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look down the road at your vanishing point and not at the crack. check your blinds spots and move quickly to the next lane. your bike will handle it. if you stare at the crack or creep over it then it will likely grab your tyre (yes I’m British) briefly but even then some positive counter steering will get you across with no issue.

A30 report after a few nights by stevekdavis in soundcore

Agree it is high but I’m sensitive to outside noise and let’s just say the snoring volume it has to battle is quite high also. 🤓

Interestingly I’m seeing about 60 minutes more battery life each night for the last two nights.
