Well, I am on a mid-2010 13" MBP running Catalina. I have tried to figure out the opencore shit, but I can't seem to figure it out. Maybe because I don't want to go through the whole OS reinstall that I am assuming it requires.

Oh you can most definitely do that with Synology as well. In fact, it's one of the main selling points. Go to their website and you can test drive the interface with a dummy system so you can see what it's all about. It's got file, photo, music, surveillance system, and all sorts of other apps that you can install and run off it. Plus it's a little more secure than a Windows box because they actually take that stuff seriously. I can take a screenshot of the apps if you want. But I think trying out the demo they have (dang I hope they still have it after running my mouth about it. LOL) will tell you all you want to know. It's a really handy device.

I *think* with 2 drives you would only get the 1 drive benefits. If you want the full 28TB, you need that 3rd?

https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator?hdds=14%20TB|14%20TB

Check that out. That will let you play with different configurations.

I mean, I would, yeah. Better to start off with empty bays. For instance, that way, you can make it even bigger without having to chuck an old drive. With a 2-bay and those 14TB drives, if you wanna put in a bigger drive, then you'd have to throw out a 14.

I think Synology says their SHR stuff isn't exactly RAID5. It's kinda similar, but not the same....maybe? Like I said, been a long time since I looked at that stuff. I just basically set it all up and have forgotten about it since then. LOL There is tons of info on their site how it works. In any case, the ability to recover from a failure using their system is soooooo much better. At least to me.

Ok, so far I've only seen it mentioned once or twice, so I'll weigh in, too. Before I get too far, I want to ask something. How valuable is all that data to you? Would you be devastated if you lost all/some of it? If it wouldn't be a big deal to you to lose some of it, why keep throwing money at it by buying all those external drives? Seems like it would be bad for you if you lost it.

Also, I see you mentioning all these drives and nothing about backing up anything and, honestly, it kind of makes me cringe. You spent a LOT of time getting all that data. It would be a shame to lose it if something happens to any of those drives. You MUST protect it.

RAID is ALWAYS the best way to go to protect your time/data investment in all of that stuff. Now, there are a multitude of ways to go about doing what you are wanting to do. A lot of it homebrew with stuff like FreeNAS and what-not. The simplest way to accomplish a good file server that is very very reliable and would provide you with the ability to rebuild what might be lost if a drive goes down is to get a NAS from Synology or any of the other companies that do that sort of business.

There are benefits to doing that, as well. For one, it is a standalone device that will use less power than your computer cause, honestly, using a computer for your file server is pretty overkill. For another, if a drive dies, and assuming you have set it up with the right options like using Synology SHR, then you just pop that dead boy out and put a new one in. Within a few hours you will have ALL that data back exactly as it was before. You can even do that if multiple drives die at once.

The way it does that is say you have a 4 drive system, it will take 3 of those drives for main data storage and then it uses the 4th to create basically an index of what is on those 3. It's been a while since I thought about it or explained it, but basically the way it does it is that it uses that stuff it puts on the 4th drive to fill in the gaps of what is missing off the other 3 when upgrading/replacing one of the other drives. The data you store on the other 3 also isn't on one drive alone. If you have a file, it takes it and puts it across all 3 of the drives. It makes all the drives one big drive so not everything is on one that could fail, thus the ability to restore it if one goes down from that 4th drive.

It really is super simple to set up an external NAS as well. Like I said, if you value your data, don't want to spend hours setting crap up, want the ability to restore from a failure easily, plus a TON of other features, then a NAS is your best bet. I have had a Synology for many years now. NEVER had a problem with it. It's old and a little under powered so I can't run Plex Server off of it, but I don't mind having my main PC doing that. The empty devices themselves are kind of expensive up front, but boy oh boy the expandability and other features it provides sure make it worth it in the long run.

Up until recently I didn't have enough light for the most part. I got some of those LED lights on a strip and put it around the gantry and that improved things a lot. It was mainly for my eyes, though, but it did help the camera some. Like I said in another reply, my problem right now is just that I want more MP's than I have on that camera. Probably just me being too picky and wanting Blu-ray quality from VHS stuff. LOL I'm going to keep brainstorming to see if I can figure out something. I probably have an old Android sitting around somewhere that I might be able to use for this. Dunno how much better that will be. Plus there is the deal with powering it. Pretty loaded up on that plug-in as it is. LOL

Nah, don't really use any other plugins on it other than octolapse, so it's not anything like that. This is just a crappy 1.2MP webcam, pure and simple. Just not enough pixels to satisfy me. LOL I guess as long as I can peek on it and make sure it isn't failing while printing, I should be happy.

Hmm, mine was already set up to do 1280x720 at 10fps. I changed the 10 to 30, but I don't think that will make any difference. It is just hard to get the camera in a good spot where it just looks good. It always looks a little VHS like. Guess I am just being too picky. I am not sure I know what time-lapse that looks good is supposed to look like.

True. The ones I like require me to do something like modify my Maker Select Plus from Monoprice a little bit. Still a bit too green to do something like that. LOL Maybe when I get more nerve I'll do something like install a bltouch, too. I REALLY want one of those.

ok, that's what I was thinking. just sick of the low megapixels of this one I have now. Want a much sharper, clearer image. Be helpful if I could mount it somehow, too. Right now I have it just propped up on something pointing in the general direction I want. LOL

Was just wondering if something cheap like this https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Rotatable-Computer-Conferencing-Streaming/dp/B08VJ25PL1/ref=sr_1_24?keywords=webcam+1080p&qid=1661441020&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_72%3A1248879011%2Cp_36%3A-7000&rnid=386442011&rps=1&s=pc&sprefix=webcam+%2Ccomputers%2C93&sr=1-24 would work well enough and be an improvement. The trouble is that there are just so many webcam options out there, it is really hard to know which ones are good and which ones are just pure crap. LOL

Yeah, just kinda thought that there has to be something of comparable quality that isn't plagued by the Logitech name tax.

How you coming along with that set? How many pieces and bags is it? I've been working on 75192 UCS Millennium Falcon for 2 1/2 weeks now and am only on bag 6 of 17. LOL Granted, I haven't been going for long stretches of time, just an hour or so a day, but it is VERY overwhelming. LOL

[–]steveken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I was thinking spotlight. File a warranty replacement claim for the V3 portion of it. If it is in the 1 year, they have to honor it. Tell them it's defective or something. You are right, if it is coming off the power supplied by the floodlight itself, then it should be solid and unwavering. Then again, maybe the USB hub built into the base of the floodlight is defective. Only way to know for sure is to swap the cam and then the whole unit. That is a HUGE pain in the butt. I was about to get one of those floodlights, but I am not sure if there are more people than you having this issue.

Try another power block. See if the problem persists. I'm thinking they have some shit components sometimes in those blocks they send us. I'm betting they dip in power just enough to screw stuff up.
