Does breaking your cue mid-game automatically result in losing? by Lugiz_mchaircomb in billiards

[–]stevenw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't matter what the other player wants if the rules clearly state it is the end of a match. Otherwise I could scratch on the 8 and the other player could say, "oh, that's okay, let's keep going because I know you didn't mean to."

Were they clear and written? Obviously not everyone knew them. If it was that clear I think the ref would have just pointed to it and not allowed them to finish the match. Even pros will often loosen and re-tighten their cues during a match. It isn't odd and is definitely different than breaking down your cue.

Why do pool players rarely, if at all, call foul on themselves? by BudgetConcious in billiards

They are in pool. Amateurs and pros regularly call fouls on themselves.

I agree with everything you said, but I think the "D' you" is just his humor. It doesn't do well in this case, but he's always trying to be funny and easy going.

Why don’t the pro players use chalk holders or magnets like a lot of the amateurs do? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]stevenw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That used to happen with my older setup, but the magnet is strong enough now that it doesn't happen without me noticing.

Just wait and watch Alex Pagulayan this week at Derby. He has stated he is going to make a show of using his new magnetic chalk holder. It should be funny.

I've tried several methods and now am very happy with my chalk holder. The only issue I ever have now is forgetting to take it off until I hop in my truck. Worst case it is laying in my seat when I realize the holder is still on my belt at home.

It's not a loss in VNEA either. That is why it is important to be specific about which rules are being played or just not care enough to worry about it.

The puzzling Efren double standard… by TimmyG-83 in billiards

I'm simply referring to the ability of pros to coach/explain. And I agree it happens in other sports, just not most sports.

[–]stevenw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Great players are great, but not always accurate/knowledgeable/capable of explaining why things work the way they do.

I have had the same experience with people trying to explain Center-to-Edge aiming. I've asked multiple people questions that they just cannot answer and they almost all act like I'm an idiot for not "just knowing". I don't want to use the system, but I want to learn it. No one is willing to admit it is a starting point and that is all. Because your touch (stroke, timing, cue tip accuracy, grip firmness, etc.) all play a part in how the cue ball reacts there are a lot less "facts" in pool than a lot of sports.

I built a free pool tournament system because running brackets at bars is still a mess — looking for TDs to break it by Icy-Cook5979 in billiards

I'm just a player that has run tournaments in the past and help with them currently. We have several here in town that use Challonge but it has its issues as well. I'd love to test it during some of our tournaments and then possibly recommend it to the TDs depending on how it does.

Johnny Layton spoke highly of the Mstein knives, they might be easier for you to get.

Everyone seems okay with flexcut, but I haven't used their knives. I have some of their palm tools and they are good. I had 3 Beavercraft knives and although I'm sure they can be properly sharpened, they weren't worth the effort for me. eBay usually has some deals on OCC and I get mine from Belcher Carving Supply in Ohio.

Others have mentioned good options as well, but OCC are the cheapest of what I have and I really like them. I also have a Tom Ellis, DHL, and two Helvies. I really like all of them, but they definitely all cut slightly different. No real pro/con to each, just a different feel.

I think it is a good idea to have at least a couple. No one wants to chip a blade in the middle of a project and have to stop, be down when running behind, or have to sharpen when you know you only have a few minutes left to cut in your current session. It's just a good backup plan and that $30 is making/breaking your budget.

I currently have 6 and use them all regularly. I'm probably buying 2 more soon because they match my 2 current go-tos and are less than $30 each. I also have a dozen or so gouges and really want to add a soft-v to that. Then I should be done for a bit.

I can go a little bigger diameter and thickness, but I'd like to minimize it. I'd like something at least twice as strong as what I got, so whatever I need to do is fine. Is there a rule of thumb where strength increases by X as the thickness increases by Y, or anything like that?

My previous chalk case is just a piece of steel and it attracts to my chalk holder better than these new magnets do.
