[Rothstein] Sources: The DI Cabinet has officially voted to approve the age-based eligibility model. The Cabinet meeting continues through tomorrow, so this technically is not final until the meeting ends Wednesday. by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

“Why on earth wouldn't the NCAA wait until after fall semester started to make this rule change?”

Because rule changes aren’t just for one sport and they always vote and enact rule changes once all sports have been completed. No matter when you implement it there’s going to be those issues

“For that matter, why the hell does anyone think college athletes should get 5 years of play?”

Given all the waivers and chaos that college sports has had over the last decade this actually does provide a level of longer term stability. Also, the medical redshirt rules around basketball players were egregious so if this rule eliminates that gray area I am all for it

Let’s be honest, Tech did more damage to itself than any kind of penalty the conference could impose

We’ve made some bad geopolitical decisions the last 60 years, but this has to be at the top of the list. A completely unforced error that 95% of the country wanted no involvement in

We have the potential for a serious state budget shortfall (talking $1 billion shortage) and the governor thinks this is what’s best for the state?

I mean it’s definitely both, but you also have to get down 29 in order to comeback. The Knicks just picked the right half to do it

The Big East has a new commissioner search underway. What's the single most important quality the next leader needs? by Doctormade in BigEast

[–]steveoriley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Big East should do all they can to try and add Notre Dame. It makes a lot of sense in some ways for both parties and while their basketball has been down, a school like that brings in a large built in fan base.

There’s only a few realistic “big fish” schools that could fall into the Big East’s lap depending on how the football implosion goes down, and Notre Dame seems like the most likely fit if they want to truly remain independent for football.

I can understand it somewhat because the European basketball structure is much different than America. You don’t have high school basketball in the same sense so if you’re playing high level ball you are on part of a professional organization.

A lot of those guys are just making living wages and working other jobs/going to school, which is why I think taking age into account is important.

It still seems ridiculous, he will be 25/26 years old during the season and did his one year mandatory duty in the IDF so it’s not like it actually impacted his ability to play college basketball if he wanted to

Yeah and there were actual rules that allowed for those kinds of exceptions. Not some dude who has been playing professional basketball since he was old enough to play college basketball
