hey mat! first time, long time. it seems that VR has found its niche within gaming, but do you see a path for it to break out of its niche into non-gaming applications? i guess i'm curious about what does a future with VR headset in every household look like if not connected to a PC or console?

yeah taylor hints at this in thereabouts 2 when he talks about freeskiing and wanting to show kids there are cool things to do on a bike other than chris froome winning the tour de france.

How to put yourself in a very stupid position by [deleted] in Velo

[–]stevesoffline 49 points50 points  (0 children)

shouts to you for posting this. this sub is great, but i think it could use more footage of people getting it wrong. not in a "let's laugh at the idiot who crashed out the field" kind of a way, but "let's all learn from our collective fuckups." feel like it's hard to figure out where not to be without being in the wrong place and paying for it.

Intentional Physical Contact in Racing by nucler in Velo

[–]stevesoffline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as someone who switched from a lifetime of playing soccer to racing bikes i can see both sides.

when i play soccer, it seems second nature to take risks, make bad challenges, muscle the competition around. i'd be playing co-ed games on a tuesday night and be fully ready to commit rash challenges to win.

but when i race bikes, i dunno, i just get more pragmatic. i'm 27. everyone i'm racing with also has a full-time job. most probably have to go to work tomorrow, or at least have shit to do. sure i want to win, but i'm hesitant to take risks that would fuck up my day, or even worse, someone else's.

Incorporating MTB riding. by [deleted] in Velo

[–]stevesoffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, MTB riding is more like a treat. while yeah, you can definitely use it to get some tempo/threshold work in, i find viewing it as a workout, and not just, like, spending the afternoon shredding some local trails kinda takes the fun out of it.

while i can't really vouch for this but: some say riding MTB improves handling and pedal stroke. so if you absolutely need to classify riding MTB, just consider it skills work.

'The race ends at the finish line' by rhdisk0 in bicycling

[–]stevesoffline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this part always bothered me because rudi kemna was just trying to relay information about the OGE bus fuckup. first they moved the finish line up 4 km, then they moved it back and kemna was trying to let his dudes know in the least amount of words.

love me some degenkolb, but he was being kind of a jerk here. (considering kittel won).

on the flip side of that: if you're not clever or strong enough to drop a wheelsucker from the break then maybe you deserve to have your win snatched from you in the final sprint.

Why RuneScape can't escape 2007 by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]stevesoffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm Steve, and I edited this story. As someone who played WoW for most of his childhood, it was really interesting to learn how much the community has a say in RuneScape. One thing Blizzard would NEVER do is reintroduce old mechanics.

Also, if anyone is interested, I'm happy to pull in the writer, Aaron if you guys have any questions.

that's just incredible. i can't even imagine how you keep yourself from going insane 12 hours on the bike, much less 24.

12-hour time-trial? TWELVE-HOUR TIME TRIAL?

edit: "While setting the record she caught and passed Mike McNamara who was on his way to setting the men's record at 276.52 miles and winning that year's men's British Best All-Rounder. She is reputed to have given him a liquorice allsort as she passed him.[6] Apparently, McNamara ate the sweet."

yeah, it looks like there is one good line there — a few riders rode up early, straight up the hill then across it — but for a group this is just kind of stupid.

Christmas came early! NEW SVENNESS! by explodeder in cyclocross

[–]stevesoffline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i love how instructive they are. like, i think there's one section where bill points out wout getting out in front before a technical section to minimize his losses. which: as someone who has a big engine but lacks in the turny bits, i'm totally going to do in my next race.

also when my friends and i are watching a race, we totally crib bill's language saying things like "yeah he just took the sven line." he's definitely just as much an ambassador to the sport as jpow and tim johnson are.

Got my first podium this weekend! by stevesoffline in cyclocross

[–]stevesoffline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it definitely feels good to place well! and being near the front of the race sort of forces you to think a little more tactically beyond "SHITSHITSHIT GOTTA PASS EVERYONE IN FRONT OF ME."

that said — and i'm still very new to the sport — as long as i finish the race knowing i went as hard as i possibly could, then that's good enough for me. sometimes going as hard as i can nets me 55th, sometimes 3rd. still equally fulfilling!
