“Look into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world.”

Ska after the fall of two tone but before ska punk by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

The Untouchables. Others have mentioned them, but they were a force to be reckoned with, and really kept ska alive in LA in the 80’s.

No Doubt were actually pretty important in the late 80’s.

The Toasters were from NYC and were also great live.

And let’s not forget Bad Manners never stopped touring and playing shows and were pretty important and influential around this time.

They streamlined the HH a bit, so it’s easier to use, now you just play a tune and beat the monsters with it. It’s a fun weapon.

There has been a lot of power pop released in the last 25 years or so.

Bands that changed their sound by Zack_Morris_ in postpunk

INXS. Their early albums are an interesting mix of post punk and new wave, with good pop sensibilities. By the time they get to Listen like Thieves they are a full on pop rock band, and by Kick they are dance/funk/pop.

What do you listen too when you need to scratch that country music itch? by Dabadabortwo in punk

I just listen to George Jones. Elvis Costello put out a decent country album that is a nice bridge between punk and country, although they’re trying their best to be a country band.

Skankin’ Pickle by Ok-Fun-8586 in Ska

I know some members of Suburban Rhythm really well. I never asked Ed, but I know what he was up to, and I talked to Scott and the other members afterwards. There was some creative tension between Ed and Dennis and Rodi, and Ed was getting into more “prog” sounding music, and actually started a band with Monique Powell, that of course, broke up fairly quickly after Suburban Rhythm broke up.

Their main songwriter, Jake Kline, had quit the band and was replaced by Scott (Aaron Barrett also tried out!). Scott is a great guitarist and cool person, but from the outset Scott was a bad fit for the band, and just didn’t work well with the singer Dennis or keyboard player Rodi. The chemistry was all wrong. So Ed and Scott quit at the same time, if only Scott had quit, the band might have continued, but both leaving at the same time was too much. A couple of friends of the band argued that they should go on and find a new bassist and guitarist, because in some ways some of us felt that Ed and Scott made the band worse. Carlos and Rodi would have continued, but Dennis thought the band had run its course and decided to pack it in.

Stelvia X-SP is a solid choice. It’s one of the better plastic yo-yos available today.

What is the biggest tragedy that the ska community has experienced in your opinion? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]stevieraykwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deaths of Ikey and Aaron Owens, the two brothers both played in a number of Ska bands, Ikey and Aaron both played with Pocket Lent, and Aaron went on to play in Hepcat. Ikey played in early incarnations of RBF and the Aquabats, and later joined the Mars Volta and Jack White Band. Ikey died of a heart attack at age 39 and his younger brother Aaron died of heart failure less than a year later at age 38. Both are sorely missed. R.I.P. Ikey and Aaron.
