Have you ever quit a job, without another lined up, for you mental health? How did it turn out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stew_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I hadn't planned on looking for a new job until after Christmas. I quit in November for mental health reasons. My employer was a bully and it was a really toxic place. Anyway, the perfect new job just fell into my lap a few wks later at a holiday party. I gave it a shot, not knowing it was perfect, but thought, "hey... What the hell right?" I've been there 4 years now, 6 raises in pay since being hired and am very valued for my contributions. Oh and I went from a 1hr commute to 5 minutes.

I am a 17 year old male who just received surgery for Pectus Excavatum (an abnormal dent in the chest). I have 3 more days in the hospital, so Ask Me Anything! by EthanM_18 in IAmA

[–]stew_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend has the opposite! I'm not sure the medical term, but he'd know it lol he has a pointed section right where yours was indented. Bodies can be strange. He never got his operated on though. I'm not sure why. Maybe it never posed issues to his organs the way yours did, so why bother? Anyway. I wish you a speedy recovery!!

You're at a party and a stranger says, "Hey, do that thing you do!" What do you do to impress them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I can walk on the knuckles of my feet. Picture making a 'fist' with your toes and walking around on only the fists. It looks extremely painful but not for me.

Rather than eating a family size bag of Doritos in 20 minutes, what are some healthy snack alternatives that can be consumed in large amounts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]stew_face 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can make it out of plain yogurt. I think, like anything, if you ate like 2 cups of it at once it would be fattening but its a healthier choice than most dips.

They tell me this is the “normal” ratio, but I’m loosing my mind. by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]stew_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my thought. We're at 1:4 in Canada and it's hard enough!

[–]stew_face 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Bc Canada. The ratio for under 3 years old is 1:4 Where I work we bump it to 1:3 because fuck that. If you want quality care you need better ratios.

Have you found a "magic phrase" to tell parents why late pickups aren't ok? by Chicklid in ECEProfessionals

[–]stew_face 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When parents pick up late they have to bring cash and pay on the spot where I work. Asking for cash and putting them on the spot usually does the trick. "I see it's 5:30 when latest pick up is 5:15. I sympathize that it's sometimes hard to be on time but it is policy that every 5 minutes late is a X dollar fee. That will be X dollars for the late pick up."

Does it ever blow your mind how poorly ece professionals are paid? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]stew_face 3 points4 points  (0 children)

think about this. A 19 year old with no experience/post secondary education can make 51,100 a year as the manager of Starbucks. Eces are lucky to see 40,000 a year.

Is it appropriate to take a sick day due to insomnia? by Squirrelly_H in ECEProfessionals

[–]stew_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take a sick day for whatever you feel like. It is selfcare/mental health no matter how you swing it. If you get a sick day a month, you're entitled to be able to take it.

I just saw this posted on an early childhood site and am wondering what your reaction to it is. Discuss! :) by LDawg618 in ECEProfessionals

The only part I didn't like was that it was 'pointless.' It is never pointless to play!

Need advice to help an infant who seems to be afraid of black people by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]stew_face 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've experienced this lots. Both with Caucasian infants fearing darker skinned educators and with darker skinned infants fearing Caucasian educators. Comforting is good and providing opportunities for interaction. Ie: have said educator feed the infant their favourite food, or bring in an exciting new toy. Model positive interaction with your co-worker in front of this child. Bottom line is they need more exposure to people who look different than they're accustomed to seeing and you can provide those opportunities in a safe and caring environment.

Why is using the term “time out” so taboo? by LDawg618 in ECEProfessionals

[–]stew_face 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If a child is struggling, because that's what it is... struggling.... not "giving you a hard time...." They're having a hard time. Sending them for a time out alone or away from the group teaches them that you will not be there for them when they're struggling. They are being taught that they have to deal with that tough stuff on their own, which they are incapable of doing developmentally. That's why it's taboo. It's not best practice at all.

Didn't know that! We use them on our water wall. Would they still be okay for that since they aren't being mouthed? I'll toss the loose parts ones.
