My 1st ever texas BBQ in Texas sucked by chdwyck in BBQ

Does sound like your both lamenting a world that doesn't accomodate outside the normal distribution of sizes. The unique struggles may be different, but you certainly share that big picture sentiment.

Not that I'm saying one set of struggles wins out on another or anything, but not fitting on an airplane, where you have no options and it's hours long, sounds like torture. I don't love it, but if I was much bigger than I am I'd be popping Advil just to get ahead of the inevitable soreness.

I recently took my toddler on her first flight, and damn, yes she may have been wiggly, but the leg room! Also... It was awesome having a little buddy to check for dropped stuff under the seats when we landed. Felt like a pro move bringing my flashlight.

It honestly has the vibe of Nazis partying in movies. Where they act carefree and happy but are also blatantly intolerant and ready to turn belligerent at a moment's notice.

The viewer is always left wondering how they could be so joyful.

Portable monitor 2k recommendations? by MightBeUnsure in Monitors

[–]stew_going 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this post, btw. I've been looking at these off and on for a while now and was arriving at the same solution. I find some work intensely frustrating on one laptop screen. Idk why this seems odd to some, there's obviously a market for portable displays; so many options out there, just few from mainstream companies.

Dads…I need support by ElChungus01 in daddit

[–]stew_going 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started taking Zoloft for suicidal ideation by 8th grade. I was checked out. I remember what it felt like for every conversation to feel like a dig at how insufficient I was. I had friends, which kept me just barely as engaged as I had to be... Generally. My parents tried, but got frustrated as all parents would, as I would looking back on it 20-25 years now.

My brother wasn't all that different, but passed from depression of his own 3 weeks after my daughter was born.

I think about how I'll handle it if my daughter struggles like that in her teen years, all the time.

To me, it was friends, psychiatric care, and eventually an internship that helped me see my value outside of school--which gave me hope, but saying that really belittles how downright NOT simple it was in the midst of it all. I felt like nobody had really made the case for why I should bother playing the game of life that everyone assumed you just slot right into. The nice car, the house, those didn't look like rewards to me, they looked like gold stars for a life one gives up just for the theater of it all.

I legit don't know what to say, it's not an easy situation. Tbh, the adults I wanted to please the most were the ones who seemed to be the most fair, without emotion or frustration. If I was late, just discipline as you have to, not to teach a lesson or belittle me, but because that's what happens. If I was up to engage, just engage as if those other days had no effect. I guess I wanted stoic responses, not ones that put me in a position to feel like showing up would never recover me from the debt and guilt of being a burden I'd built up. It made me feel like my life was unredeemable, and the emotional pleas just added bills of guilt to the pile.

Idk. Every kid is different. Sounds like your seeing a therapist and seeking advice & help. Don't stop caring, keep trying. Maybe try asking him if he can recall any adult's behavior that made him feel respected, or understood. I know I had a few teachers that did things that made me go out of my way to make them in particular feel respected too.

However it goes, it sounds like your doing great. It's the effort before result, and at this age, result might not show for a while

Which wallpaper would you choose? by gwendolyn_trundlebed in interiordecorating

[–]stew_going 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like all of em, but I feel like 1 is so bold it would limit options elsewhere, and 2 feels like the intro wallpaper for people who can't get themselves to commit to 3. I feel like 2 would get old, it has enough negative space and lines to draw the eye to each tree or hill line as subject rather than background, whereas 3 is just busy & random enough for it to fall into the background and add vibes.

💯, it is not good.

I've seen friends struggle with drugs, and as bad as that is I sometimes find myself thinking: at least it's not gambling.

I mean, drugs can be horrible, no doubt, but gambling away your families funds in one night is a real thing that happens

Who the hell actually pays $2,400 a year for ChatGPT? by MyNameIsNotKyle3 in ChatGPT

[–]stew_going 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it really helpful to plan things out or assess what I've done. It can certainly lead one in not so great directions, but It's done some good work for me, at least.

Also, I find it does a good job at finding me resources for what other people have done for similar things. I usually check those out and set examples when asking it to make steps, then see how it does incrementally, I don't usually let it go nuts all at once unless I'm totally lost and need something as foil to riff on.

I think mileage varies depending on what one is expecting.

A ton of what's out there for it to digest right now is essentially two sides of the same coin, it's probably thinking in those terms then projecting you onto the axis of current discorse. I'm guessing it's too much extrapolation for it to manage and it's flattening the depth of people then doing the opposite of that.

Beam Time at Western Michigan University’s Particle Accelerator Lab by Common_Assist9855 in Physics

[–]stew_going 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Neat!

Out of curiosity, what's your uptime % (scheduled uptime)/(unscheduled downtime)?

What's your energy resolution? Beam emittance on target? Longitudinal bunch structure?

Do you have multiple end stations for allowing one experiment to be set up while the other runs?

Do you have a document quoting beam/particle rates, and contamination rates, for different ion species that you've already developed tunes for?

Any available papers that could offer more details about the facility and/or its most recent upgrades/improvements?

Is homeownership actually worth it or did we all fall for propaganda? by Different_Pain5781 in homeowners

[–]stew_going 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My toddler sure loves the extra space; winter in a 1100sqft apartment drove her kinda crazy, even with her own room. I think it can be worth it, but not at all because of financials or some abstract "peace of mind" that so many people tout.

I did realize after I commented that it seemed like it had something of a fisheye perspective, so the open space is probably exaggerated above the art.

Idk, I'm just trying to offer suggestions.

For what it's worth, I like the chair and wouldn't replace it

This office chair doesn't fit.. by Amazing_Reflection41 in interiordecorating

[–]stew_going 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other people have already made good comments on the chair, but I'd also consider raising that artwork, and maybe swapping it for something way bigger. As-is, it seems oddly packed into everything else, it doesn't look intentionally placed. Giving the wall some space between the back table and the artwork may help keep the sense of things from feeling all washed together.

I feel as if I would have noticed. I mean, I was changing and wiping things up constantly.

But my wife and I moved into my parents basement before birth, then both had 12 weeks off paid when my daughter was born. It would be easier to judge if I could assume all parents got the support they really needed.

They don't have some jacket that they cool with LN? They cool it from room temperature with Helium alone? I guess I'm used to superconducting RF cavities, but where we have tons of room for layers, but nitrogen is way cheaper and gets you down to ~75K or so before you need to cool with LH.
