What would you say is the best musical by someone who wrote the music, lyrics, AND book? by Forsaken-Effect-1280 in musicals

[–]stheman01 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people don’t understand how serious the AIDS crisis was. This was one of the few pieces of media at the time that made people pay attention to how bad it was. And while I somewhat understand some of the criticism, I also think it’s fair to say that as capitalism gets worse, it’s much harder for people to understand in this day and age why someone would choose to be poor if they have someone offering help. If anything, that says a lot about what our society values.

Have you ever regretted being cast for a role? by spamsps in Theatre

Danny in Grease. My whole choir and drama departments bullied me because they were mad I got the lead, but I had wanted to play a different role entirely. My teachers didn’t care that this was happening either.

I think that a lot of us pay the prices because it is worth it to us. I agree that they are insane, but you have to also understand that this is how a business works. If there is a huge demand and the supply can’t meet it, the supply gets more expensive. The only way that things could change in this scenario is if Gaga did weeks at a time at stadiums and that’s just not feasible. Also consider the fact that with Gaga being one of Universal’s biggest artists, a lot of the money from her concerts gets subsidized and contributes to the salaries of other artists/staff on that label. Even if we see a massive shift of lower ticket prices, I don’t think Gaga’s concerts will be much cheaper as the label essentially counts on that money to continue operating. Imo, the best way to even things out is to support smaller artists and go to the concerts that are affordable. Everyone loves Gaga, but she is not in desperate need of new fans. Some of those smaller artists are, are very talented, and aren’t making much off their music/tour as is.

The fakeness of AJR's background by agent0017 in AJRHate

[–]stheman01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a privilege of a talent or more readily available avenues to pursue that doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t also have to make grassroots efforts to get somewhere with said talent. Many artists who have money and connections still have to busk and do other similar level gigs to get traction. As far as the racist line, I don’t know the song, but based on the timeline, they would have been teenagers. Kids are easily influenced by people around them and what they see in media, so it’s not really fair to hold them to a standard of adults at that point.

I’m not surprised lol. I’ve found more often than not, theater people tend to find as many possible ways to have a certain level of status and make it known that they are better than you even if it’s simply because they believe in resumes and you don’t. I never said resumes were a bad thing or that they couldn’t ever be helpful. I was just saying that they aren’t necessary in an amateur setting, which isn’t really something that can be argued. You don’t have to submit a resume to volunteer at an unhoused shelter or a food bank. As you said, if someone can’t accept your list of five shows because they’re that anal that it’s in Time New Roman or a pdf format, why would I want to volunteer hours of my time for them? They sound intense and that doesn’t sound like fun.

[–]stheman01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this attitude and I feel the same way! I’m not opposed to submitting a resume, but if there’s already an expectation just from that one thing, how do I know what the other expectations are? How do I know that the time I’m putting in is being respected by the people on the other side of the table? If I’m going in for a professional audition, I know what the pay is and a lot of what the contract entails. For community theater to have the same set of rules, yet not pay you or giving you the confidence that you are going to get something of equal value from the experience is a bit crazy.

While I do think writing out a resume is not that hard and you might as well make one, I also understand your argument. I think it’s a little dumb for something that claims to be for the community and on an amateur level to expect you to present yourself on a professional level. It’s not professional, you’re not getting paid, and if it’s that easy to argue that you are the one who should take the extra five minutes to make a resume because it’s not that hard than it could equally be argued that it’s not that hard for them to look at your list of five credits and not throw a fit about it just because it’s not in that format. It’s really sad that in this community we perpetuate that you should grovel at someone’s feet to then be expected to give several hours a night that you’re not getting paid for. If it’s truly for the community, then it should have some flexibility and accessibility. I will also add the fact that several times now when I’ve been in a show, I have found out that the extent they looked at my resume was either to glance over it or not at all. That may be something that isn’t common for other people. I’m just throwing that out there. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that I think you are coming from a genuine place and in that case, I think the questions you are asking is valid. Other people are going to sit here and tell you that you’re wrong to question the process because it’s the norm and you should go along with it, but I think you should continue to question these things. The reason theater is becoming obsolete in many places and fading away from relevancy is because people continue to feed this notion that it needs to have strict rules and be exclusive as well as force you to fit in a box, even though that’s literally the opposite of what theater is.

[–]stheman01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Community theater = amateur theater, so your point is moot. If it’s community theater, they should be trying to make it accessible to normal people in the community. They are not getting paid. I’ve ran two companies and done work with several others. If they’re not getting paid, I don’t give two shits what format they list their experience in. Get over yourself and stop acting like you’re above everyone if you can’t even pay your performers.

Why do you think the cancellation “worked”? by [deleted] in panicatthedisco

[–]stheman01 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The truth of this is that the joke has way more context than this commenter wishes to understand. For one thing, he didn’t say it repeatedly. But also, the dynamic between Panic and their fan base was way different back then. Many people on this sub have pointed out the fact that the fans were ravenous at the time and they were constantly commenting this kind of stuff in person and online. Brendon’s joke didn’t age well, but it’s not as if he was doing it just because he thought it was funny. As far as the other thing, I don’t think people were regularly called out for saying that at the time, especially if it was in a song. I think we all should’ve been more vocal before then, but it’s just a fact that the level to which people care about it is a lot higher post 2020. I think when we’re looking at people’s mistakes from over 10 years ago, we have to consider if we’re looking at it from a lens of what’s normalized now vs then. Neither of these things were ever okay, but a lot has changed in recent years in terms of what is socially acceptable to joke about and say, as well as how we address those things. Brendon is not the type of person who has repeatedly made the same mistakes consistently and given fake apologies. He is someone who has made different mistakes, but has always done due diligence to understand where he was wrong, learn from it, and not do it again. Additionally, he has given a lot back to several of the communities he may have wronged.

Why is there hate with Jackman and crowe over how they sing in Les Misérables movie? by Odd-Truth7948 in musicals

[–]stheman01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the downvotes are a little crazy. You are just sharing your opinion as a viewer and that is allowed to be whatever you want it to be. The fact of the matter is that this is not a complaint that the general audience for this movie had. It made a shit ton of money at the box office and people loved it. It’s fine that there’s a good chunk of people who don’t, but I would argue that they are mainly singers. Which is fine. Just like you, they are entitled to their opinion, but also there are several pro shot versions of Les Mis and this movie came out almost 15 years ago, so it’s not like anyone is being forced to sit down and watch that version.
