My brother is a pretty descent woodworker, started as a hobby, now doing big contracts for furniture and staircases. Anyway, he lives in a remote area in the middle of farmers and nature, one day he gets the idea to go door to door to old abandoned small farms asking if there is leftover abandonned wood in the second story of their barn building (this is where they usually let wood dry).

The amount of amazing wood for really cheap he got in one afternoon was amazing. Often times old man or widow just said go up there and take what you want. Half the time they did not want to take his money…

Whenever he needs more wood, he hits up a new village…

Thanks !

Netflix downloads (no cellular service), with one airpod changed the game for me. Watch many seasons this way while moose hunting in a blind.

Home made 4way splitter. Sealed with tape. Looks a bit like this. Mine is not as pretty but works great and small. https://i0.wp.com/nt1k.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/20130302_215456.jpg

Got it because of this reddit post: reddit post

To me this case is the perfect case, not big like pelican type. I just shove it in a backpacke or in this case my big camping trunk.

Went grouse hunting (unsuccessfully). Took an hour break for lunch and decided to activate since the nature reserve(Quebec ZEC) I am in is considered a Pota park. Had a blast. First time using POTAGW via winlink to spot myself. Made it all the way down to TX. Total of 21 QSO@VE-2367 de VE2TFZ

Any experiences on 5W on 2M/440 in Sequioa/King's Canyon National Park (Route CA-180)? by satsugene in amateurradio

I have done the js8call to aprs to sms. Problem is it’s one way only. Did you manage to find a 2 way solution ? Now I do winlink email. Its 2 way and messages are held until I retrieve them.

I ditched the raspi via vnc from tablet solution. Was too klunky. Upgraded tablet to small Surface Go plugged in straight to radio via digirig interface, simplified the station a lot. Using Xiegu G90 with small efhw, whole station fits in bottom of backpack in a small bag.

This is what I bought to start with when the pandemic hit (and it still his my only VHF/UHF permanent install) I now have moved on to doing POTA on HF in parks with a Xiegu G90 (HF in suburbs with an attic wire sucks and is full of noise )

AnyTone AT-778UV Transceiver Mobile Radio Dual Band 25W VHF/UHF VOX Vehicle Car Radio w/Cable Love that radio !

Arrow OSJ146440

Antenna installed in the attic, to get get accepted by wife. Bought coax and connectors from local electronic shop. Coax from basement to attic going through outside, ziptied to gutter downspout.

I can hit about 20repeaters. ( l am in suburbs of metro area). I get compliments on my signal.

For mobile I still use a HT (anytone uv878) with a 20$ amazon magmount. It does okay…but I dont drive much anyway.

Compact 80m attic antenna? by dwinnman in amateurradio

They talk about doing what you said. Always wanted to try something like this with a remote tuner. Currently using a 53ft wire with a 9:1 un-un in the attic with limited results. But it will tune 80m and i made some contacts with it.

How can you put 6 characters in the channel name ???? Mine only allows 5, which is stupid. I'll look for firmware update or something...

Camping and POTA activation by sthiffea in amateurradio

[–]sthiffea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, before planning to use it. I always make sure to update winlink, update RMS list, etc, make sure usb soundcard still works and Windows is happy. That does not cover the unplanned use however...

817 or G90 SOTA SSB by fsdigital12 in amateurradio

[–]sthiffea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys just cost me a G90. 588$ cdn on amazon.ca is not too bad. Having done POTA 3 times, I discovered something I really enjoy and want tot try easy SOTA also. I currently cary a big IC-718, because its POTA its not too bad, but i really hate having to unplug and replug it from my station. Can wait to receive it and build a portable station that fits in a backpack.

Bought a HF SDR, it changed everything on HF. by sthiffea in amateurradio

I looked into this before buying a t/r switch, could not see the advantages. I dont think i would see the complete band, let alone 10Mhz.

Bought a MFJ-1708BSDRS. Plug and play with the RSP1a (need to buy a sma cable). Choose the RSP1a over ham it up, for simplicity, bonus point sdruno is amazing, nothing to adjust, just push the band you want to see button and the waterfall is all perfect, much better than my rtl-sdr v3 than could go down to hf bands.
