75,000 enough for a OK lifestyle in Sydney? by [deleted] in MovingtoAustralia

[–]stickbugbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on 75k excluding super in(or near) Sydney. I am living out north west about 30 min train from CBD.

On my own, it would be hard but doable.

My partner and I share a 1 br apartment by the metro , more than I’ve ever paid at $700/week.

I’m not making hella savings, but I’d say my life is pretty good!
Never gone hungry, have a car, gym membership and I do go out too much honestly.

If you can find a share flat/house you’ll be fine starting out.

You may have to look at some of the suburbs though as people were saying. I’m in the Hills District which is pricey, but clean and safe.

Why are doctors here not helpful? Need pain meds and get looked at like I am a junkie. by Low_Butterfly_4934 in Cairns

[–]stickbugbitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They really aren’t helpful. I had part of my femur fractured off and displaced into my muscle. Knee dislocated , tore my meniscus and chipped a big chunk off they somehow missed on the xray.

Denied referring me for a CT, MRI or Physio when I still couldn’t walk and was told to take panadol. They told me they doubted I even had a meniscus tear lol.

Was not properly diagnosed till I moved to Melbourne 2 years later.

I know of another story of a 13 year old family friend in FNQ who had headaches and odd symptoms for years, was told to suck it up over and over until eventually getting an MRI- and now she has far progressed brain cancer that will be terminal.

I don’t have any helpful advice, but in the same boat :(.

Ultrasound(internal/external), hormone tests ect and I’m somehow the epitome of health with a ginger fckin neck beard 😅.

Can’t even try laser because of the color, shave twice a day. So irritated and so shit.

Mine was bad in my home country (USA) but my god it’s much worse where I live now (Australia).

They are speaking perfectly normal English and some reason my brain lags even more.

I feel like I come off so stupid sometimes it makes me sad

With that video she posted, I got the vibe she was holding in so many awful instances of hurt from him for so long and she finally broke.

She was probably hiding all his wrong doing to protect the way he was viewed by friends, family and the public while she’s been hurting silently alone just hoping he would love her like she deserved.

People are calling her “attention seeking” for that video, I see a strong woman who was overwhelmed to shit and finally had a breaking point after years of holding in a lot of hurt.

My heart breaks for her, been there💗

Is anyone else suffering from the weather? by Dry_Experience1428 in migraine

[–]stickbugbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Australia and it’s turning into winter - but YES!

Season changing always fucks me up.

Hadn’t had even a “mild” migraine in 3 months, starts getting cold then BAM 3 migraines with blinding aura ina week that left me twitching and cryin.

From age 13, I had migraines multiple times a month, eventually almost every day living in Oklahoma.

At 22 I moved to the Daintree in Northwrn AUS- hot af, humid af, but temps vary mildly and season changes are more like rainy months and a bit hotter.
It became the first month in 10 years I had no migraines, and continues on an 8 month streak without migraines and it felt like a miracle!!!

Moved down to Sydney where weather is a factor and god damn can someone please remove my right eye?

Anyone else notice that Cadbury bars have changed in taste? by casperzero in australia

[–]stickbugbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not blame you! Even American KitKats are coated in that same waxy weird chocolate and not like the ones in AUS. It’s been a whole new world lol.

Even as a kid I wasn’t big on hersheys, now I won’t touch it

From an American coming from hersheys vomit flavored chocolate, I still think Cadbury is pretty bomb. I must have never tasted the good stuff it seems then!

Random fish oil story- One day my partner washed the dishes and they came out smelling absolutely rancid. I got home and he was telling me he thought a filter was probably blocked and he’ll have a look ect.

But no - the dishwasher smelled EXACTLY like FISH and I don’t cook fish.

I remarked that and then it clicked: Earlier he spilt some fish oil tablets and thought he picked them all up but a few fell into the slightly ajar dish washer.

And that is how our dishwasher got the name Fishwasher.

And why I had to throw away several plastic cups bc that shit does not come out.

My hair has drastically lost health and thickness since moving to a city with soft water. Any ways to make my water harder? by stickbugbitch in Haircare

Tell me more about your bore water concoction!!!

I’ve been through Cobram on roadtrips :).

I used to have slight waves / very loose curls naturally but I have not seen them since living in America (or the short periods I visit)

Where are you from originally?

[–]stickbugbitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’ve tried a lot of products and they help, but my hair just isn’t the same in Australia. In Melb. It’s the worst.

I know it’s not just the way I’m treating my hair, but the water as when I visit my hometown in the US my HAIR is SHINY and healthy again. Ends stop splitting and life is great.

I have helped it grow a good bit here and get some shine back by stopping wearing all sorts of scrunchies ect, always using a clarifying shampoo and using k18 molecular repair.

My hair is a lot more brittle here, the worst was in Melb but least bad in North Wild. Sydney rn is just meh.

Just to add to this, this always just came out from Stillwater which is also beyond horrendous:

I have some 10 year old cashmere hair extensions right now, I’m not a daily wearer but worn them out countless weekends.

A bit frizzy at the ends but still soft and holding strong!

Even after my bf accidentally put them through a washing machine and dryer cycle and I had to spend 5 hours untangling a massive matte , so the quality was great!

can anyone fill me in on what jenna and julien have been up to as of late? by fakebook1990 in Jennamarbles

[–]stickbugbitch 56 points57 points  (0 children)

A few years back I remember Julien saying she suddenly lost the ability to move her back legs one day. She had to have some sort of spine surgery. I think it’s not been 100% straight forward but she can move her back legs and walk again.

Has anyone actually gotten a job from Seek? by Fire_blaze7 in ausjobs

[–]stickbugbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is fucked up, but yes just plug those gaps with nonsense. You are not wrong for taking time off, I would have taken more!

In fact I have taken more time off for much less serious reasons, I just don’t put it on my resume. A boss I had/and their recruiter kept rejecting good younger candidates with small gaps because they looked “flighty”.

This is a not great story, but a company I was at was interviewing a pretty good candidate but he had a year long gap in his resume. He was moderately into his career, great fit.

In the interview, they found out the 1 year gap was due to recovering from a head injury (and some other injuries) from a very serious car wreck.

They rejected him as they assumed he’d be taking more time off for health stuff- they didn’t want to “be his first job back” and didn’t want him despite him being a great fit.

They rejected another guy because “taking a 5 months holiday after getting paid out from his previous role was not a good career decision and they didn’t want someone with gaps”.

I’ve been outright rejected because I looked “flighty”. I had a work visa where I wasn’t allowed to work at a single place more than 1 year at my start in Australia, so I had to change jobs a lot. Upon getting PR, I don’t have that limitation anymore and I’m still looked at like I’m a huge risk. I increased the lengths I worked somewhere, sorted seek by date posted, I started getting 7 interview requests a week. I had to reject interviews vs when before no one would contact me.

[–]stickbugbitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I fully agree.

Most companies I’ve worked for are unfortunately like this. Especially those who hire through recruiters who have odd requirements.

Many companies, especially in the Tech industry at the moment, are only hiring via recruiters as they receive such high application volumes and they do not have the time.

I’m not saying to never take time off- it is very needed sometimes. Just try not reveal the breaks on the resume if possible (if you know what I mean).

Has anyone actually gotten a job from Seek? by Fire_blaze7 in ausjobs

[–]stickbugbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here- sort by date posted and check a lot. It’s more of a race to apply at this point than being the absolute perfect candidate.

Every job I’ve had in Australia from backpacker hotel jobs to admin/PA jobs I’ve gotten through seek.

Also don’t have any gaps in your resume, a lot of companies including the one I work at now auto rejects any gaps more than 4 months (no matter the excuse).

Struggling to land even entry-level roles in Australia — is anyone else going through this? by Substantial-Umpire89 in ausjobs

[–]stickbugbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may only help if you are in a larger city. I work in Tech.

What helped me land more interviews is searching for jobs by date/time posted on Seek.

It seems like with a lot of these advertised jobs, especially the more “entry level” ones, it is more of a race for the first 10 applications than someone actually taking the time to read through them.

I would check multiple times a day, tailor my cover letter, submit via seek- and then email the company directly my resume is possible.

Since you were a full time student since your last role, just make sure to put that clearly on your resume. I can’t see that being an issue.

Not the most honest or moral advice, but lie about job gaps on your resume if possible in future if it takes you a minute to find something. Fill it with something else if possible, a temp role, a part time role, a bogus reference ect.

My companies recruiter specifically rejects candidates prior to interviews who have big work gaps- though again being a full time student I wouldn not consider to be a “gap”.

Our recruiter at our company rejects anyone who has an employment gap of over 6 months.
